Subject: Problems using R5 files on Nokia 9210

Psion format files can easily be converted from the different EPOC formats if

you do this via a Windows PC.

Connect Psion to a PC & copy all files to the PC using Windows Explorer,

select the convert option when asked. The screen does not need to be

functional to activate the link, just press the system icon then CTRL-L

followed by C then the Return key. (CTRL-L turns the link on on English

version of EPOC, it maybe different for other languages)

Connect the Nokia to the same PC & use Windows Explorer to copy the files to

the Nokia, using the convert option.

You will still have a problem where equivalent applications such as Jotter

don't exist on the Nokia but it will at least convert the contents to a Word

file.

You can have the Psion & Nokia communications software running at the same

time if you have 2 serial ports & they are configured for a single serial

port, otherwise you must make sure that you only have the Psion OR Nokia

software running as they will be fighting each other to take control of the

serial ports. They can be closed by right clicking on the relevant icon in the

system tray (bottom right corner) & selecting the close or exit option.

Files that don't require conversion such as MBM & JPEG images can be beamed

directly between the Psion & Nokia if you install the PLbeam software on the

Psion, the Nokia places these files in the 'In' box.

Subject: Connecting Psion to the web via Nokia 9210 PDA

Hi All

Does anyone know the Psion modem settings to allow it to connect to the

Internet via a Nokia 9210.

I can connect via a Nokia 8210 but the settings won't work with the 9210.

I know the infrared link between the Psion & Nokia works as I can beam files

between them.

I have tried 2 different Psion devices & neither will work with the 9210.

Subject: Bluetooth CF Cards

Hi everyone,

In the June edition on PCWorld there's an article (p.20) on Bluetooth. One sentence caught my eye:

"Socket's Bluetooth Compact Flash Card is the only one I've seen on which the aerial does not protrude outside the slot"

If this is true, it suggests the the 5mx CF door might be able to close which I understood was the main obstacle to using a CF Bluetooth card in it.

I'm sure there are other issues but are they over-comeable?

Socket is at www.socketcom.com.

All the best, Chris

Subject: Data Costs

Hi All Thanks for the responses on data costs on mobile phones, or more correctly having them included in the inclusive minutes. I have just rung T-mobile, who currently charge me (my employer) £25 per month for the pleasure of a 6310i and 200 anytime minutes. I explained that I might be unemployed for some time and was seeking a solution to my quandary of which mobile payment method to keep. They have come up with a reduction to £7.50 per month and 45 inclusive minutes anytime. Still have to pay for data calls, but the call costs for normal calls are much cheaper than Pay as You Talk. It goes on for 6 months and I will be able to change over to whatever I find suitable in the future. Suits my needs as I expect them to be. Staying in contact being the most important. My 6310i started to switch off and reboot recently, worrying as I have just sold the 6210, so I took it into the service centre. They flashed the latest rev of the software onto it and all now seems OK again. Has anyone managed to get Phoneman working with the 6310i? I am using the Nokia 1.15F plugin, but I just get a "Bad device driver" error when trying to connect to the phone to sync the phonebook. SMS is no problem, but the 1.15F plugin is supposed to add support for extended phonebooks. Thanks Andy Hayes

Subject: 5mx Automatic Sync Problem

I am experiencing a minor, but irritating, problem while synchronizing my 5mx with outlook 98 running under Windows NT.

The problem is that I cannot enable automatic synchronization.  When I check the box and click on "OK", it does not remember the setting.

Manual synchronization works flawlessly - I seem to be a minority in this respect !

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone know the solution?

I'm trying to get my netBook to send email to my ADSL ISP's SMTP server. Unfortunately, the ISP requires authentication. That does not appear to be an option with the Psion email program. .....  Any ideas would be appreciated. "

I ran into the same issue - the only work round I know is to use XJmail, which whilst works well is a little complex compared to the psion email app. Search www.psionplace.com forums for loads of info XJmail.

Data Enabled PAYG (in the UK)

I can also confirm that vodaphone do allow data calls with a PAYG SIM card. mmO2 (BT Cellnet) do not - ran into that problem as well (when I lived in the UK)

There is no easy way to do this without Outlook. You can output Psion Agenda either using AgnDump (although I can't get this to work on my 5mx) or do a print to file and clean up the results in a spreadsheet. The problem you're going to have is the Palm Desktop. There is no import facility at all.... <<<<

I'm not sure whether it's of help or not (since I don't know enough about Palm) but you might like to check out 'vCal' from Malcolm Bryant at Freepoc (www.freepoc.org).  It imports/exports industry standard VCS files to/from Agenda.  Don't know if the Palm can import these directly (I'd guess there's 3rd party software available).  If not, I'd assume most desktop software can.

<<<<

True - 'of this size'.  But for a modest increase in size, the S7's/nB's (or variants thereof!) is significantly better.  In fact it's better than my IBM ThinkPad T23's keyboard (usually considered 'good' in the industry) that it's sitting next to as I type this.  Subjective opinion certainly of

course - but I've been typing for many years (not continuously, you understand!).

Agree completely with you comments on the S5/mx's screen.  Which is why - after dabbling on the M$ 'dark side' for 18 months - I came back to a netBook.  I carried a 5/mx for more than 4 years and wouldn't have dreamt of using anything else at the time for all the reasons you give.  Malcolm Bryant once suggested that I switch to using a revo/S7 combination and at the time I thought he was nuts.  Carry *2* PDAs into the shower?!?  (hmm... maybe not a sensible pun...!)  With the benefit of hindsight, I realise he was completely right.  I used to believe that my 5mx was totally portable. In reality I'd either hand carry it in a leather case and/or carry it in a briefcase (since carrying it in a jacket pocket invariably damaged the jacket).  This is no different to how I carry my netBook today (except that I couldn't out it into a jacket pocket if even I wanted to!).  In fact I've got an article impending at FoxPop describing a very appropriate S7/nB case for just this purpose.  I remember very clearly seriously considering one of those under-the-armpit S5 holsters that Covertec did - but the thought of being jumped on by 50 security guys every time I went through Heathrow always put me off!  ;-o

I realise of course that I must sound to you like Malcolm sounded to me a couple of years ago and that I'm unlikley to be able to sway the views of any dedicated 5/mx user!  I just felt the need for a gush.  Ahem.  I'll go and lie down in a quiet room now for a while...  ;-)

<I have a new question for you all. Who uses his EPOC machine exclusively as their man computer without other computer equipment besides it ? And what do you use it for and which programs ?>

Ooh, where do I start?  I think it's safe to say I use my S7 for almost everything I possibly can - work and play appointments in Agenda, work databases in Data, alarm clock, lots of surfing in Web, lots of work and play related Email, accounts in Money, fuel usage in RMR Fuel, digital photo storage, letter writing, games, work spreadsheets, route planning, PDF reading, e-book reading, personal journals, phonebook management, dictionary, mp3 player, calculations, World Time to see when I can ring colleagues in foreign countries, answering machine message storage....etc etc.  I've tried to describe some of the more unusual ways I use it but it's invaluable to me - long live the S7!

So what I need to know is which UK providers include data calls in the inclusive minutes on contract agreements? Also I am correct in thinking that it is only TMobile and Virgin that issue data enabled payg phones in the UK. (Sorry Mike, you must have answered this one a 1,000 times by now!). Note my comment regarding Orange in the previous paragraph.  I am loathe to have a BT line due to the lack of competition in the local loop.>

This is probably of no use to you now but my Everyday 50 tariff gives me 50 daily off-peak minutes of data/fax/voice inclusive minutes per day and this includes 0845/0870 non-geographical numbers.  Unfortunately, they closed this tariff to new subscribers or upgraders from last October.  This probably means if I try to upgrade my handset I'll lose this tariff and I'll have to go onto the more expensive Your Plan :-(

Simon Jeffree wrote:

<I don't know about Shetland but generally speaking, a BT landline will always be cheaper than a mobile, with or without competition at the local loop.>

This is true, generally speaking, but not always so.  My Everyday 50 tariff above works out at a penny per minute at any off-peak time - BT is a penny and a half on weekday evenings.  I think BT's national off-peak rate is about 2 - 3 pence per minute whereas Everyday 50's is still the same penny per minute.  However, the catch is Orange's peak rate - a big 35 pence per minute!  That's very high indeed for voice calls but actually not as bad as one might think for picking up a quick email on my 9210 if I really have to pick it up during the working day (approx 30p to 40p).  This is rare though and I usually pick it up at the end of the day at off-peak rates.  Then this becomes dirt cheap because Orange, unlike BT, don't have a minimum per call charge (BT is 5p per call, even if you only connect for one second) so a one minute log on to pick up an email off-peak on Everyday 50 costs me one penny :-)

Tony,

You are not alone in this problem with Sound Master - I have the same problem on my Series 7.  However, Processing of sounds does work, just not the playback.  I think the Series 7/netbook handles sound slightly differently from the Series 5/5mx.  For example, sound in the Z80 emulator is set to not work on the Series 7 and Sound playback in Frodo (C64 emulator) works put plays back slowing up the display somewhat.  What I do is use Sound Master to clean up sounds, increase volume and then play them in Record.  I know of know fix for this problem.
