Subject: SmtpAuth updated
Hi,
after a busy weekend, I was able to upload an improved version of my SMTP authenticating proxy (V 0.42) to http://www.mvcsys.de/download. You will need smtpauth-sis.zip and epocutil-sis.zip.
I fixed some issues with the GUI, which took me a lot of reading in Martin Tasker's EPOC C++ book: I've added more native methods to the utility lib for task and window handling. But the more important fixes are related to the actual proxy engine. Two "customers" sent me logs which revealed that the proxy was unable to login to their mail servers. This is hopefully fixed.
The source will be available soon but I have to streamline it slightly. My development environment is a little "non standard", involving an OS/2 desktop for all the editing and Java stuff,
and my W2K laptop for the EPOC SDK related compiling work. I'm going to create a setup, that
can be used on a single Win machine, soon.
BTW, because SmtpAuth is a Java application, it runs natively on any Java 1.1 compliant
platform. I fear that Java's memory footprint rules it out for Revo or Mako owners. The app can
be used without the GUI (just a command line) which might help to reduce memory requirements.
Part of the utility lib is some localization stuff, fixing issues in Java localization that is not properly working on my (German) EPOC devices. I've added a properties file that is read at
startup to corrrect some of the settings, especially time zone and locale. I'd asked for help from your side, because I have to maintain the settings manually for each region. Please check again
my posting "Locale information required" in digest #255 and provide feedback! This is not only for SmtpAuth but for all Java apps I'm willing to create for our devices.
And please do test with the proxy to get the bugs out!
Marcus

Thanks Itamar. Excel files seem to be interchangeable on Mac and Windows.
But having to invoke a third-party program, and then do editing adjustments is not as convenient as translating in a P3 and transferring them directly.

Dear fellow programmers,
I suggest we all add the following procedure to the top of our programmes.
include "systinfo.oxh"
proc norolf:
if loc(lower$(siowner$:),"rolf brunsting")
loop::
dinit "I shall not be arrogant"
dtext "","OK?",1
dbuttons "Yes",%y or $300,"No",%n or $300
if dialog<>%y
giprint "Wrong answer Rolf, try again..." :pause 40
goto loop
endif
endif
startprog:
endp
proc startprog:

Of course I meant:

(I'm sure Rolf will have some extensive comments on this slip of the pen...)

You have to make usre you angle the S7 the right way otherwise you see absolutely nothing, which means you cannot stabilise it against the windscreen. However, the hooks worked just fine and kept it in place, even through bends and over bumps. It does not hinder my view throught he windscreen in any significant way (I am quite tall). <<
I am fascinated by the idea of using the Psion as a moving map system. Don't the Velcro hooks create a bump on the S7 underside so that it then becomes unstable on your desk? I hope that you managed to find a space on your dashboard that isn't in the way of the airbags...

I just got the same message this morning on my new netbook... was going out to get myself a new battery when I read of your problem. I wasn't aware that this was a bug. Now I'll measure the battery voltage when I get home.
If anyone does know how to fix this please do post to the digest. Thanks

Itamar, yes, (sorry, I thought I had made it clear) it does fullfledged double bookkeeping: for every debit entry there *has* to be a credit, and vice versa. Six types of account can be created: bank, credit card, asset, liability, VAT and cash, and one can create as many of each as one wishes. It divides income and expenditure into categories (and sub-categories) as one sees fit to
create, and gives the net worth of one's business at any time, and a detailed Profit & Loss statement. If, as I think, you have past issues of Palmtop, see detailed review in Issue 27, pps 55 to 60. Actually the latter mentions that one could download a demo version free of charge, but whether that still obtains, I'm not sure...
PS I would like to add my voice of thanks and congratulations to the entire Digest team on passing the first anniversary!

Subject: Malaybook OPL Toolbar Battery Indicator Fix
Thanks to everybody who has sent me Toolbar source files and machine types! I've got all the major EPOC machines now except for the Geofox and Osaris.
I'm now going to try and figure out the differences between the various toolbars and work out a unified version suitable for bundling with my patcher program. Except for the netPad, that is. The support for portrait vs landscape is too complicated for a first go :-(
Thanks again to everyone who replied.

Hi Gilles,
> brand new CR2032 battery in the Series5. The battery status indicator ( > system/info/battery ) shows battery not present !
First, back up your psion, using batteries and mains adapter.
Second, take out the backup battery and have a thorough look at the bay where it was inserted: Is there any corrosion at the contacts?
If you press down the backup battery with a finger, does it still read "not present"? If not, a folded piece of paper between battery and lid of the bay might help to press
the battery against the contacts.
And, btw. check the voltage of your "new" battery with a multimeter - is it really new? Should read at least 3.0 V on a new one. A voltage below (roughly estimated) 2.4 V
is near the end of life of the battery and might be indicated as "not present".

Subject: Invaders
My thanks to MIcheal Degn and Martin Guthrie for sending me a copy of Invaders5. Micheal, you'll be pleased to know the second copy unzipped in Navigator with no trouble (the first one wouldn't due to a "bad offset").
Subject: Shareware registration problem
I have a weird problem with some trial versions of shareware from Symbianware for my 9210 Communicator. I'm going to send this email to them....
<I have installed Smart Answer on my machine (one of your programs I wish to now register). The trial version has now expired but doesn't offer the user the option to register it - it simply says "trial version has expired" and exits when I press "OK". I've even tried downloading a new trial version but the same thing happens. If I pay for it to get it registered I don't see how I can actually enter the activation code as I cannot get into the program to do this.>
....but I'd welcome any suggestions from any EPOC experts in the meantime. Just how can I do it?
Regards

Subject: Tuberoute, replace backup battery, mail2web.com, ABP v Money,
Answer to: Simon Wolf
Re.: Tuberoute - With the monopoly remark Rolf was telling him that there is no other product like that for the EPOC machines of course. Maybe Rolf's use of language or tone/style (it is his 2nd language) were not well choosen, but he made some points about the program that are valid. It is up to the author to decide whether or not he is interested in continueing the development or not.
Answer to: Gilles G. CASANOVA
Re. replace backup battery - I can't find it either, however try just to put a small piece of carton between the battery and the plastic above it to push it down better. You might find it will do the trick.
Answer to: Mark
Re. mail2web.com - Thanks for the efforts. In the meantime I've got Opera installed and that works better than a Tellnet program.
Answer to: Kevin Thorne
Re. ABP v Money - Thanks for that Kevin, but I am a ABP user myself. I am interested in hearing about what Money does _more_ than ABP <G>.
Best regards,
