Subject: Purpose of SmtpAuth
Itamar,
>Re.: SmtpAuth updated - Sorry for asking this probably "silly" question, but why do people need an smtp authentication program ? What does it do or could it do for the Psion user that (s)he can't do without it?
In a world without spam there would probably never be a need for something like SmtpAuth. In order to make it harder for spammers to send out their bulk mail, ISPs are changing the protocol of their SMTP servers: you need to authenticate yourself before you are granted access and can send mail. EPOC mail doesn't provide the neccessary settings and protocols. This locks Psion users out of certain ISPs.
SmtpAuth simply gets in the way and traps the HELO command from EPOC mail, changes it to
EHLO, waits for an authentication request from the server and in turn sends userid and
password. After that the proxy switches to transparent mode and routes the data between the
mail program and the server untouched.
Users can simply compare the contents of the logfiles in C:\LOGS\Mail to see the difference.
BTW: CompuServe changed its SMTP server in another common way: access is only granted to subscribers which are logged into the Internet via a CIS node. This makes it impossible to send CIS mail from a broadband connection or company network (except via the special HMI protocol
over telnet).

Carlos, Mark,
>Come to think of it, does the same system exist in the UK as it does here, viz you pay the postman in cash when he delivers something "cash on delivery"?
Its not a matter of SRS's policy, its a problem of the "Deutsche Post". Cash on delivery is still possible in Germany but was discontinued by the Post for foreign countries. This makes it impossible for SRS to get their payment the way they did it before.

Yes it does!

> fully charged....
The problem is that without resorting to an OPX that's not built into the ROM, the battery status is read as one of four values: Good, Low, Very Low, and Zero! Obviously, you are never letting your battery go down to the "Low" state.
It may also be due to OPL applications not regularly updating the toolbar. Tapping on the battery usually forces the application to give the toolbar a 'wake up call'. Yes, the System screen and other built-in apps don't need you to do that, but that's down to the way the applications are written, not the toolbar. If your favourite app doesn't regularly update the toolbar, let the author know!
I'm planning on developing an enhanced toolbar that will use an OPX to get more precise battery readings, plus (hopefully) do a few other things. That will be a few weeks at least, though.

Subject: GPRS and WAP browser - the solution
Although with these settings WAP via GPRS works perfectly with my MC218, unfortunately there's no way a string like at+cgdcont=,"ip","wap.vodafone.co.uk" is going to be accepted on a netbook - it can only take 20 characters Max.
I've tried leaving this blank as I do when connecting to normal GPRS internet, but to no avail. I've played around a bit with the settings, but the closest I get is a 'creating gprs connection' message on the phone, and a subsequent ' authentication failed' message on said phone.
Any thoughts?

I found the last piece of the puzzle for Vodafone at www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html. Here are the differences between my WAP and WEB settings. Apologies for the long post.
The difference between Nokia 6510 GPRS WAP and WEB modem settings is the APN (Access Point Name) in the Data init. string
WAP = at+cgdcont=,"ip","wap.vodafone.co.uk"
WEB = at+cgdcont=,"ip","internet"
The difference between the Vodafone GPRS WAP and WEB Internet service settings is the username/password
WA WEB = web/web
and the Primary DNS server
WAP = Get DNS address from server: unticked
Primary DNS address: 212.183.137.12
WEB = Get DNS address from server: ticked

Subject: SRS repairs payment policy
Hi -
Carlos in Germany said on 27 May 2003 that he checked with SRS and that
their policy for Psion repairs is still "cash on delivery".
That's definitely not the case for UK customers - trust me, I waited with my
cash ready for a long while! I think the problem is probably that Deutsche
Post no longer offer Cash on Delivery to the UK (or that it's no longer a
practical option for SRS).
Incidentally, before I put it on ebay, is anyone interested in making an
offer for a recently-repaired Psion 5mx? I bought a Palm m515 whilst
waiting for the Psion repair and, although it's not as versatile, it DOES
fit in my pocket and is Bluetooth-compatible with my mobile phone...
Best regards

Subject: Tom Tom and Macs:Caveat emptor!
It was only after paying for and downloading the Italian and Cobuild dictionaries from the TomTom site that I realised the installer worked only on Windows - and not on my Mac.
I contacted TomTom asking that I should be sent the .sis installer files and after three days this is the laconic and very unhelpful reply:
> Thanks for your mail.
> The installation will not run on a Macintosh
> please visit our website :
> http://www.tomtom.com/products/platform/products.php?ID=22&Language=1 > and look at the maps en coverage
This really does not help me. I don't understand what is meant by coverage.
Thanks to Virtual PC and looking in the temp files of Windows 98, I have got the Cobuild .sis file and the dictionary - excellent, by the way - is up and running. (I can't get PsiWin under VPC emulation to connect to the Psion.)
But the Italian dictionary asks for some .dll file and refuses to open.
Is there any way for this harassed Mac user to extract a .sis file from an .exe file.?
Any help appreciated.

Hello Again
Re my earlier attached mail, first of all please excuse me for sending the whole digest back with my reply - I've already smacked myself on the wrist for that and promised never to do it again. Secondly - I managed to sort out the gprs - wap - netbook problem, by entering the wap APN directly onto my mobile phone.
Luckily my phone (nokia 6310i) can hold a number of different apns, which can then be activated as necessary.
Cheers!

How about writing an article for FoxPop Itamar? (http://www.foxpop.ndirect.co.uk/newsviews/News1.htm) I know that Elizabeth is always happy to receive contributions and a number of people on the Digest (and elsewhere) contribute fairly frequently in order to keep the 'EPOC End Up'. ;-) She's in the process of moving her server(s) so there won't be another update until the end of June at the earliest - which gives you plenty of time! <g>

Thanks to Keith Giles, for info on the Psion emulator. Looks like I'd better wait until I'm feeling brainy to try this. I hope it's not too long a wait.
Thanks too to Itamar for advice on whether to get a 5 fixed to use as back up to a 5mx. I might give it a try, since I don't need to back up email and don't use Contacts, having never migrated from Data.

Hello List,
I am planning a short trip to southern England from 20 - 26 June. If there is a Psion User meeting somewhere I would be happy to hear about it here or via PM.
Here in Germany, I am a customer of T-mobile. From experience I know, that getting my mails via T-mobile roaming abroad is very costly. Do some of you know a cheaper method of coming online with a mobile? Prepaid UK card?

Subject: Re: SmtpAuth updated
I am sure Marcus will chime in about his program, but I thought I would too as one of his "customers". I recently entered the 21st Century and got ADSL (or maybe I am just getting into the 20th century). My ADSL IP requires authentication with its SMTP server. That means when I want to send an email, I must tell the SMTP server my user ID and password. Other stuff happens in that exchange that is beyond my knowledge, but that's the bottom line. Marcus has a good explanation of it in the help file that accompanies SMTPAuth.
The regular Psion email program does not have a mechanism for doing this. XJMail developed by a programmer in Japan does. However it is a little too complex for my wife to use. Therefore Marcus's program is a godsend for us. Once we get it working with my recalcitrant ISP, I can setup a macro which hopefully can load SMTPAuth, Email, and make some of this geek stuff more automatic for my wife.
Marcus has been great about working to make his program work with my ISP.

Subject: E-mail log files
Hi.
I recently received an e-mail with a virus attachment. Not a problem for me since I use my Psions for e-mail, but it would have been useful to have some clue as to where it came from. Could someone please remind me which folders I need to set up on my Psion to log incoming e-mails (including the headers) to text files? This would also have been useful the other day when a friend sent me an e-mail with a 1.5mb attachment. If I'd had the log folders set up, I could have started receiving the e-mail and then aborted. That way I would have been able to read the text of the e-mail in the log file.
BTW, the virus was the file "movie28.pif" attached to an e-mail from (yeah, right...). The text of the e-mail simply said. "All information is in the attached file." Am I right in assuming there is no way of getting at the header of the e-mail to try to figure out where it _really_ came from once I've received it and deleted it from the POP3 server? It's scary how vulnerable WindoZe computers are to these critters...

On my MnetBook the battery indicator is correct on the built-in apps I use (Word, Sheet, Data, Jotter, Agenda). Some of my 3rd-party apps don't show the battery indicator. (ChaDis7 always has its own battery correct indicator) My 3rd-party apps that do show the battery indicator now have it always full. Looks like more work for Andrew. :-)

Subject: OT WindoZe help
Hi.
I just bought a new 20 gig disk for my Win 2000 laptop. It's temporarily installed in an external USB drive enclosure and I've partitioned and formatted it (NTFS). What I want to do now is copy my entire WindoZe installation to the new disk, install it in the laptop and have everything up and running just as it is today without the pain of installing WindoZe and all my drivers and software from scratch.
I know I can't simply copy the contents of the old drive across as WindoZe expects certain things to be in specific places on the disk. Nero has an option to make an image of a disk on CD's and restore from DOS, but the restore needs to be run from a Win98 startup disk, so presumably doesn't support NTFS. (The old disk is NTFS too.)
Off list replies please.

Kevin,
Somewhere in the system the program puts a little file that indicates the date the software was installed. Sometimes a soft reset can resolve the problem but not in every case. If you can find the file deleting it will work. However, there is a simpler method - just change the clock on your device to about the time you installed the application and the message will go away and you will be able to register and then change the clock back!
Hope this helps,
