"Re. Spam - Thanks for the info, but sometimes knowing everything doesn't make you happy either <G>. I for myself decided that SPAM is much the same as all the rubbish post I get through my letterbox (even though I always tick off not to receive it on forms) and bin immediately. I look at the headers and first delete all spam and other rubbish before downloading what I want to read (another advantage of the Psion email program, you see the headers first). On my PC, I NEVER open anything I don't know where it is coming from, and certainly NO attachments."

Just thought that I'd mention that "The Bat!", a Windows based email program, has very similar header functionality to ER5 Email. With The Bat! you can see the message headers on the POP3 server, choose what messages to download to your PC (or not) and what to leave on the server or delete from the server - all before downloading begins. It works pretty much the same way as ER5 Email. I have used it a number of times over the years to delete suspicious messages before they 'hit' my laptop. I was very glad to see that Email on the Psion worked much the same way. As a matter of fact, it is one of the reasons why I chose to go with a Psion over another unmentionable handheld. Of course, with the Psion I use the header preview only to filter out SPAM - though I've only received a couple of SPAM messages at this address this year (I hope my good fortune holds!), - but with my Windows laptop I consider a good header preview my first line of defense against viruses.

Subject: BatGauge7 4 nB/7

I don't recall reading any discussion of this freeware gem on the Digest as of yet. I thought I'd bring it up in case someone else might find it as useful as I do. I've configured one of the side buttons on my MnetBook to launch it so it's always good and handy.

A quick description: when launched BatGauge7 pops up a small on-screen panel which displays the battery voltage, present runtime on battery power and an estimation of the remaining time left on the battery in hours and minutes - as well as allowing for adjustment of both screen brightness and contrast with the cursor (arrow) keys while giving an indication of the present setting for each. When the brightness is adjusted the estimation of battery runtime left is adjusted accordingly. I'm not sure how accurate the estimates are though. Unfortunately, if the program is closed down and restarted the present runtime figure is reset to zero. BatGauge7 also has an alarm function that can be configured to show a dialog box and/or play a sound when the battery has dropped to any particular voltage level.

I've found that it has replaced ChaDis7, BatCheck and SetScreen (which only allows for adjustment of contrast anyway) on my MnetBook.

BatGauge7 can be found here:  http://www.marukusu.de

A version for the 5mx is also available.

Enjoy!

I've seen reference to "transparent" on a few occasions and have no idea what that means in computer-speak. The meaning is certainly not transparent to me. :-)

I use it w. OS9 (I deleted OSX, even Apple should dotheir betatesting themselves...) - and it functions w. no problems, plug and play, and is stable. So I can't help you... Maybe just reinstall carefully, including thje extras updates.

The trouble is that the communcation is frightfully slow, so I would like to have sys- installers for TomTom Maps etc. for transfer via CF. TomTom are not helpful, so I didn't buy the latest version of their CityMaps etc..

Anyone else any idea how to extract sys- es?

Sending via the Orange SMTP server works with the Psion and a GPRS connection, but not with another ISP's dialup connection (and Orange withdrew their own dialup).

Running SmtpAuth *does* now allow mail to be sent from the Orange server using the Psion with another ISP's dialup.

Thank you, Itamar, for your advice. The 6310 would be my first choice too but is no longer available in Hong Kong or Bangkok. Only the latest models seem to be on sale now with cameras, mms etc. Some friends will bring me a 6310 from Belgium in a few months, but for now I need something (preferably inexpensive) to tide me over. Please would you tell me the settings you use for the 6310 i.e. any scripts necessary? Many thanks.

My congratulations as well to Marcus von Cube.  I hopre the various directories of Epoc software will be updated with pointers to SMTPAuth, since the "accepted wisdom" has been that XJMail was the only

option for authenticated mail sending.  It's likely to becoem more important as more ISP's require authentication to prevent spamming.

XJMail doesn't support.  Epoc Email plus SMTPAuth, for the first time I have both IMAP access and authenticated SMTP sending.

> no new information is required for my authentication.

> So if I can connect then what's to stop spammers?

No *new* information was needed *from you* becasue you had

already entered your password in your email program for POP (or IMAP) email receiving.  Ticking the box caused the password already stored  to be used for SMTP sending as well.

Depending on what you use it for, and how many of your settings are different from the machine defaults, it may not.  I use both, and each restores some settings the other doesn't.

Hi all,

Phil asked:

<Incidentally (salix), what is meter in your earlier "Usage of EPOC machines" post? I assume it's series7/netBook specific, to do with the battery pack. I'll probably get one soon so it'd be nice to know what the better battery utilities are.>

Phil, Meter is an app. that you input dates or times and it informs you in real time various aspects; since, until, etc, that event or time. It is very configurable and the sun times are already worked out to your location. I find it both fun and useful. On my Meter at the moment are:

1. How many months, weeks, day, hours and minutes until my birthday

2. Hours and minutes since sunrise in Bristol

3. How many Years, months, days, hours and minutes since I met my wife

4. How many decades, years, months, weeks and days, since I was born

5. How many months, weeks, days until christmas

There are many more things Meter can do, I would not be without it - its great!!

Meter is shareware and is available from http://www.xilonen.co.uk,  try it.

Best wishes

Salix

Subject: usage of epoc machine

Hello everybody!

I have been using EPOC since april 1997. I begun with a 3a and little by little I evolved to S5, S5mx and happily ended up with using a nB for 18 months now.

I started using the 3a  for organizing my salesagent job, therefore you may easily understand now I have got a 6-year-long archive in my nB. Today - due also to the DIMM upgrade and a 128 MB CF - I can use it almost for everything (the exceptions are multimedia purposes, but at the moment I do not have much freetime left, so I do not worry about that).

My nB became my first computer as soon as I got to use it in WI-FI mode both at home and in the office. Not only now can I write emails from my desk, but also from the kitchen and the arm-chair as well.

The apps/programs which boosted my EPOC usage are:

(in order of appearance)

PsiWin 2.3.3

nConvert

Opera

ResetPlus

PDF

Essential Data Utilities

Phoneman

SaveMail

RMRzip

Sysback

ThesLink

Epoc VNC

Macro5

ExAb

PDFprinter

the forum which supported my loyalty as well as every buying decision of mine were "the digest" and "www.psionplace.com". I am honoured to be a member of both. I believe that Psion itself should definitely be proud of the excellent self-support service offered by communities such as these ones, to whom I am extremely grateful.

Hello from Italy!

Thanks for the infos about the revo wap browser on the hungarian psion site. I went there and downloaded it, and now is on my netBook.

The fact is I don't really know what to do with that, since I have never thought about the chance of using WAP.

I would like to try it as I am constantly out for my calls during the day. So it may be useful to use it with my GSM connection.

therefore, any tips, hints, wap websites - especially those dealing with psion matters - would be gratefully welcomed!

By any chance, is there a wap version of such site as psioneering.co.uk and www.psionplace.com?

if you have some, please drop a line...

It's a long time ago, but I think the solution was to put ATS34=1 into the Control Panel - Modems - Initialisation - Data Int. string.

To: Dick Chatjaval   Subject: S45 versus t68i

What s45 would do that your used t68i wouldn't?

===

To Itamar, Subject telnet deleting

You could

A- move each and every msg(s) you can to your 7 Email inbox leaving the rogue one(s) on the pop server

B- close the mailbox (if possible)

C- Immediately Telnet for deleting the remaining msg(s)

D-  if B does not work :

When telneting your popserver,

after USER.... PASS......tape :

LIST

The response is a line for each message with its NUMBER and size in bytes, ending with a period on a line by itself. Sample response:

+OK 3 messages

1 1205

2 305

3 344400

.

Then you can  : NB   # = Number of msg in List = here: 1; 2; 3

RETR #

displays the msg number # on your telnet screen. You probably don't want to do this unless you have turned on telnet logging ie with Hermes

Example:

RETR 2

DELE #

This marks message number # (and only this very msg)

Example:

DELE 3

for deletion from the server. It is not actually deleted until the

QUIT

command is issued. If you lose the connection to the mail server before issuing the QUIT command, the server should not delete any messages.

Does it help??

Subject: Mail, GPRS and thanks

Been away for a long weekend, struggling to keep up with the digest, yet so appreciate all the contributions, just wish there were more hours in the day to explore all the threads, especially the spam ones, thanks Trygve et al.  I use yahoo, which has a good feature for reporting email as spam yet I still get about 5 a day, though they are rarely more than a few K and only occasionally crash mail, and it is easy enough to use Opera to "unstick" the mail box going to yahoo online, though I am finding that if I log on with Opera first I seem to get fewer mail crashes so I am suspecting it mail have something else to do with the mobile phone route I use.

Colin Messer : <<<I promised Vodafone Technical Support an e-mail.  Perhaps once it gets on there database they will contact you, but I wouldn't hold my breath.>>>  They left a message on my answer phone at 9pm on Saturday with a reference number and ext. to call so will let you know how I get on.

<<<Consider using TheDialer a program>>>  Yes I have this, though have not thought to use it for this GPRS connection.  What I am finding is it connects to GPRS no problem, it just times out or similar in the WAP browser, though if I move to email I can see I am still connected and on the phone the "G" is still there.

<<<and of course check the logs.>>>  I am at a loss here, I have logs but do not understand them or know how to read them (many thanks to Mike McConnel for looking at these for me and helping to explain them)

<<<Is it possible that your System\Data\Commsdb.dat is corrupt?>>>  Its possible though all the others connections work OK.  If I get some more lonely time I will give the renaming option a go, at present it just is not crucial enough, more a matter of principle.

<<<so a number of builds later.  Perhaps some faults were addressed.>>>  Yes is anyone using the buiild I have successfully, if I get to a pc I will have a go at loading the latest wap, unless someone can point to a web link for it other than the Hungarian site (I am PC PSIWINless).

<<<I use this service setting for both WEB and WAP.>>>  Interesting thanks!  I notice in your setting you make no mention of what you put in the password box (so far I have tried using the same as the GPRS access point so either web, WAP or USERwhich is what I have entered on the psion, are they case sensitive?) or do I leave them blank?

(((<<< interesting about the data settings in Modem as I have had that blank for web and e-mail and it has been working fine>>>  Do you still get the GPRS session set up?  Without the at+cgdcont I just get a GSM session.)))  Yes I have nothing in the Data init string for my GPRS settings and web and email work great.

Thanks for your Perseverance Colin I still see a slight halo of GPRS guru around you, and feel oh so close to having this solved.

Kind regards

Mark
