Subject: Re: Redifining silkscreen buttons
On 7 Jun 2003 Owen H. Morgan asked:
"Could someone please remind me which file I need to edit to change which applications are on which silkscreen buttons?"
I take the liberty of copying for you a snippet from comp.sys.psion.apps newsgroup (posted on 8 April 2002, thread 'Change Jotter/Phone icons').
"The operating system -- or, more precisely, the shell which is responsible for starting the different applications --- considers the silkscreen as a part of the extras bars. The positions are numbered, starting from 0 (the System icon), through 1 (Word icon) to 7 (the Sketch icon). Number 8 is the position above the word icon, number 15 the position above the Extras icon, and so on.
The layout of the Extra bars is stored in the file "c:\system\apps\shell\shell.ini". This file also contains the definitions for the silkscreen icons, but while the layout of the rest of the extras bars can be changed in the control panel, the meaning of the silkscreen icons cannot be changed so easily. Here are instructions for doing it by hand, using a hex editor such as FileDump.
Let's assume you want to start the web browser whenever you press the Sheet icon on the silkscreen. First use the control panel to select a fixed position for the web browser on your Extras bar. Row one above the sheet icon would be a good choice.
Now start Filedump on "c:\system\apps\shell\shell.ini", and look for the strings "Sheet" and "Web". In front of the string there is a single byte that indicates the length of the string. The four bytes in front of that are the unique id of the applications. In front of that, there are three zero bytes, and then there is a byte that contains the position of the application on the extras bar. In our case, you should see the byte 02 infront of Sheet (if you counted, it should be the ninth byte counting backwards from the "S" of sheet), and 09 in front of Web. Simply exchangethe values of these two bytes, i.e. put 09 in front of Sheet, and 02 infront of Web. Save the file back to its original location.
Now you have to do a soft reboot to make the shell read the modified ini file. Be careful not to do anything that would make the shell rewrite the file before you reboot (i.e. do not change the extras bar or any system preferences).
Voila, press the Sheet icon. Your web browser should come up. You can check the extras bar to see that Sheet is now on the position where Web had been before---on row one above the Sheet icon. You can therefore start Sheet by holding Control when you press the Sheet icon.
Nothing can really go wrong when you do this. If you really mess up the file, the system will simply discard it and overwrite it using the default settings.
Enjoy!
Otfried"
I have already tried this method on my netBook, and found out that it works very well.
Hope that helps

"David, FYI I installed it, but have trouble.
1. Help is in German.
2. I can only access the Menu by clicking the Menu key 3-4 times.
I'm also trying it out on my 5mx. That version has more Menu selections (but I still have to punch the Menu key a lot to get it to show), one of which is Help (in English)."
Yup, the help file is in German only; an English translation *would* be nice - but the program seems pretty self-explanatory as it is. Thanks for mentioning the 5mx version's English help file though: I hadn't noticed that. I have no explanation for your problems with the menu - it pops up on my MnetBook on the *first* tap of the silk icon and on the first press of the Menu key. Perhaps you've got another app running in the background (on both your nB and 5mx) that is somehow interfering with BG's operation?

When I use the macro "Brightlight" from the same author it shows contract 17 and BatGauge7 shows contrast 18. The control panel also shows 18 so the macro has got a bug."
FYI: I found Brightlight to be quite buggy as well and stopped using it. I would like to see a translation of the BatGauge7 help file - if you can manage it. If you do take the time to translate it from German, perhaps BatGauge7's author could use your translation for a separate English help file. Just a thought.

"On my other 5mx PsiLoc+ replaces Alarm+, StickyKeys, SysBack and EPOC Task Manager."
PsiLoc+ sure does do *a lot*. Unfortunately, I've found it to be *very* unstable (both the version I tried a year ago on my 5mx and the version I tried just last week on my MnB) and I've also found that in some *crucial* areas (to me) PsiLoc+'s functionally is not quite up to par in comparison to some of the applications I would have wanted it to replace. Just my 2c.

Subject: Sita nB 32MB DIMM Upgrade.
For those who don't know - Sita Multimedia is currently offering a 32MB DIMM upgrade module for the netBook for $127 US with free shipping anywhere. You can find the offer here:
http://www.sitashop.com/shopping/netbook92.asp
I received my order a few days ago, and after taking the relevant anti-static precautions and after reading this page of instructions:
http://newth.net/psion7/install-dimm.html
I installed the module in a matter of seconds without incident. I'm finally able to use my MnetBook without any concern for how much RAM is available. I think I've probably seen the last 'out of memory' error message too! I'm also *finally* able to browse the Web with Opera (with images on or off) without having to close down all other running programs. I've also moved my large email archive Data file to C: where it opens, closes and sorts much more quickly.
So is the upgrade worth it? Absolutely, without a doubt - yes! For the first time I was able to move all of my programs onto C: along with all associated help files. Even with circa 60 programs and their help files installed on C: plus my own data - I am able to run *many* apps of varying RAM footprints all at the same time. As I type I have the following apps running: Word (a few docs), Email, Web *and* Opera, The Dialer, Merlin (which I'm testing and will be registering soon - great app!), RMRTask, QuickNote, Locker, EPOC Task Manager, Jotter (with a 1.2MB file), BatGauge7, Agenda, and I've still got almost 17MB of RAM to play with.

Macro5 does this (but must be left running in the background to work). EPOC Task Manager does this also and unless you specifically quit it it is always running. I believe that there are other apps that can do the same, but ETM is to my mind the *best* way to accomplish this.

>> Two further questions :
1/ What is Wifi ? <<
WiFi is basically wireless Ethernet, and is the popular name for the what is officially known as IEEE 802.11x. There are currently 3 versions; 802.11a, 11b and now 11g. 11b has a maximum data rate of 11MBps, 11a is the same (I think) but uses a different frequency (5GHz instead of 2,4GHz), while the standard for 11g is not yet finalised, but will be capable of maximum data rates of 54MBps. My advice would be not to buy any WiFi device claiming 54MBps performance, as this may not work with devices from other manufacturers, due to differences in interpretation of what the standard is/should be.
The WiFi logo that appears on WiFi products means that they have been tested to be completely 100% compatible with the WiFi standard, and therefore will work with all other devices carrying the WiFi logo. By the way, I would avoid the Sitecom USB WiFi adapter that I bought for Windows XP PC; it's cr*p, doesn't work properly unders XP, and the suggestions that I received from their support made very lttle sense.

I read this on an ER6 site:
<Many of the problems that you may have with your 9210 can be fixed by a firmware upgrade. I would recommend that you keep the firmware as up to date as possible. This is partly because of greater stability, but also partly because some software requires a minimum firmware version. For example Answering Machine software requires firmware 4.11 or above because a certain function call (one that allows a programmer to get his programmer to answer an incoming call) is not supported until this version.>

Years ago I upgraded from an analogue cell phone to digital as I wanted to have two phones with the same number. The early digital phones used a SIM that was the same size as a credit card and could be inserted and removed without taking the phone apart. Sadly this excellent feature has now gone.
Later I enquired about having a second SIM and was told that it was not possible as it would cause problems with their network if both phones were switched on at the same time.

Hi Itamar et al,
You have to use a utility to recover the memory. Both system utilities EPOC Task Manager (Robin Hood) and PsiLoc have this built-in and I assume other such programs have similar functions though Purple's Navigator doesn't. But there are other utilities, mostly macros like FreeMemB.
There are other programs (presumably not OPL ones) that "leak" memory so I have FreeMemB in CronTab as a daily macro. If there is a better macro I'd like to know as I am definitely not a guru!
Good luck,

Wi-Fi (also known as "802.11b") is a standard for short-range, low- powered, unlicensed digital data transfer. It's between Bluetooth and GSM/GPRS in range. Wi-fi transceivers typically have a range of 30-100 meters, depending on the amount of RF noise and whether there are walls, metal objects, etc.in between. Theoretical throughput is up to 11M bps; real throughput more often 1-2M bps. Typically there is one fixed Wi-Fi transceiver in an "access point" connected to a LAN and/or the Internet, providing netweork connectivity for up to several dozen Wi-Fi cards on palmtops or other mobile devices. It can even be used to link desktop computers, to avoid having to string wires through walls.

Not sure about MochaPPP, but it works with DSLink. Contact me if you want a copy -- I got one when it was still available for free redistribution.

I saw a brilliant reply from Ian and therefore there is not much to add. I don't have his URL here but you will easily find it by clicking on his DIEM nickname on PsionPlace

I personally use a belkin wlan card which is not bad (I paid it less than 90 euros back to december 2002), while I have recently bought a malaybook for my wife with a wlan cisco 340 aironet PC conly 42 USD!). It seems to me that the latter is more performing even if it eats more battery power as well as does not work with the netstat RF app.
a good friend of mine has just bought a MalayBook + Ericsson AP + cisco 340 from sitashop. the price was excellent, definitely better than any italian offer. he will connect all the above to a HAG (home access gateway) provided by his ISP. at the moment he is away for business and therefore I cannot tell how things are going. I suppose there should be no problem either.

I downloaded a list of these access numbers, saved them on the Psion and change the access number on the Psion Internet settings as I travel from one country to another. The dialler also sends out a particular UserID, but you can see this in the PC connection dialog, and I copied this over to the Psion.
If your brother can do some testing on a PC before setting out, he could see exactly what iPass is doing and copy this information on the Mbook.

If you have a cable modem, DSL, or already have a network connection to

You don't necessarily need an access point since the netBook supports peer-to-peer access. The *cheapest* solution is to buy a cheap PCMCIA
WiFi card (for the nB) and a cheap USB WiFi unit for the PC. You can
buy both new for approx. GBP80 total. The downside to doing it this way
is that your PC needs to be switched on the whole time you want to use
the WiFi link. In my case - since (despite living in the SE of England)
I am considered non-ADSL'able in the 'world according to BT' - I
would've needed a 56K modem router Access Point if I'd wanted the
ability to connect over WiFi without the PC being on - and those things
are expensive! Hence I went for the cheap'n'cheerful solution. However surfing wirelessly of my nB whilst wandering about the house is just
soooo cool! :¬)

It should be pretty easy: there's very little setup. You might want to configure the setup for some additional security, but it will probably
work quite literally as is, "out of the box", once you plug everything
in.
<<<<
Make sure you (at least temporarily) turn off any firewall you've got
running when you set things up with your PC. Took me about a week to
figure out this simplest of things!
I'm planning on writing an article on WiFi+netBooks (or possibly a
series of them) for FoxPop in the near future - possibly in time for the
July edition...

Subject: Opera 5.14
So I downloaded it from the website of Opera. Well, indeed it now works with multiple windows but I still cannot enter my email account of Freeserve via their website. When I enter my email address and password as per the set-up required I get an page with an error message and lot's of rubbish.
Did anyone succeed in checking Freeserve mail via Web or Opera and if so what should one do to make it possible ?

Subject: Opera message II
Forgot to ask. After downloading the upgrade I got a nudge message that it is free for 30 days only. Do I understand correctly that for nB and S7 users only the earlier version was FOC or can one ask a free registration ? (I don't mind to pay if I like it, just want to know the situation)
