Can anyone help me with writing some code on my 5mx for a Text editor. I need it to open a data file and display part of the file from one marker to the next.

I used to be able to dial up local Compuserve numbers with my, first: Motorola Timeport, then: Nokia 6310i. I had a Compuserve Classic account then. (This is different to the new CS internet Access which they're now selling, here in Germany at least). CS still charged normal connection fees; no such thing as "free" access.

In my experience there's no telling what the hotels will charge. A few weeks ago I drove from Chicago to LA and found all sorts of charging varieties. I stuck to my mobile... which was probably the most expensive variety. I found that I usually had a GSM T-Mobile connection in most places (see coverage under http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/). No GPRS as far as I could make out, true.

Re. Usage of EPOC machine - Thanks for yr answer. Last week I upgraded to an ADSL line at home and I must say that anything else looks anciently slow to me now. It is just so fast, and Psion email via MochaPPP also works very fast as well. I don't think I would use the s7 to search the web, but otherwise I agree with you.

Re: Routeplanner.

I had the same problem and am convinced it's only when the gps is connected. I have both route and street planner open with the gps running on the visible one. I've written 2 macros for macro5 that go to preferences, close the gps on (say) route then switch to street and open the gps. The other macro does the reverse for the other program and hence I can toggle between the 2 without crashing the car or the psion.

Itamar,

My advice would be to never, ever, under any circumstances, upgrade memory without first removing all batteries. You wouldn't do anything like this to a PC while it was powered up, and a Psion with its batteries in is no different (well, it's obviously very different, but you know what I mean.) You could be *very* lucky and not have any problems, but that's all would be, luck. After all, it doesn't take that long back up C: to a CF card...

Anyway, that's my €0,50 worth, Ian.

Hi.

As some of you will remember, I was thinking of buying a 5mx Pro motherboard from a damaged machine and upgrading my standard UK English 5mx. However, I have just got some information which indicates that this may not be a good idea.

A friend of mine in Lithuania has a 24mb 5mx Pro. He has just installed the UK English ROM image (he doesn't understand much German) and found that he has around 13mb of free space on C: on a clean machine. I don't particularly want to hard reset my 5mx now, but my MC218 (with a cracked screen) has 15420kb of free space after a hard reset (and deleting the example files), so it would seem that there is actually more space on C: on a standard 16mb 5mx than on a 24mb Pro? Apparently, the Pro has 14mb of free space with the German OS. Anyone know why the UK English OS version leaves less free space?

Another interesting point is that the UK English OS image my friend installed on his Pro is actually software version 1.05(250). This is _exactly_ the same version as my standard UK English 5mx is running. Is this the only English OS version available for the Pro? What, if anything is the difference between the OS versions on a standard German 5mx and a German Pro? Were there ever any OS updates for the German Pro, and if so, what were the differences?

I suppose I could upgrade the RAM on the Pro motherboard, but it looks like I might actually end up with more free space if I upgrade the RAM on the standard 5mx? In fact, there should still be more free space on a standard 5mx upgraded to 24mb than on a 32mb Pro. Is there any advantage at all to owning a 5mx Pro over a standard 5mx? I suppose we can all safely assume there won't be any new OS upgrades for the Pro?

My Lithuanian friend says there are Russian sites dealing with upgrading the RAM in a 5mx at home. Does anyone know of any information about this in a language the rest of us understand? How difficult is this compared to for example replacing the screen cable which I have done successfully? Anyone know where to find the chips or whether any other changes are needed? I seem to remember there may be problems with upgrading the RAM on a standard 5mx to 32mb and that it is better to go to 24mb. How much more RAM can you put in a 24mb Pro without problems?

the email client crashes each time I want to delete a message, close remote mailbox or even change the font size:

The connection does not crash so when I launch Email again and reopen my mailbox everything works fine.

My emails are stored on my server which is a standard email Linux Mandrake 9.0 server (IMAP). When I access it from my PC, everything works, so I assume the problem is not on the server side.

Thanks for your help and/or suggestions.

Euan,

Just to double check; press the function key <Fn> with <?> just to ensure that the screen darkness is set light enough to be readable. A simple test. I doubt it's the 'screen cable failure' as that usally happens incrementally. (3rd time for me). Fingers crossed.

Now, Itamar, I realize that we in the US may be a little technologically

challenged but there is GPRS available in almost all the major cities of the

country. You can find a listing of the GPRS carriers and their coverage maps

at http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_us.shtml .

Local calls, if made from a home phone, are included in the monthly rate so

there's no per minute charge. Many, but not all, hotels have free local

calling. Check with the front desk to find out for sure. Generally, the more

upscale the hotel, the more likely they are to gouge you for things like

telephone calls.

I hope you have an enjoyable time in our country.

Regards, Jim

Itamar, There is no consistency in the local call charge policy in hotels here, as far as I've been able to determine. For example, last month I stayed in an Orlando, Florida Hilton for a week. Each local call was 35 cents (no time limit). When my conference was over I moved to a much less expensive MicroTel where I expected the local calls to be at least 75 cents but found that they were absolutely free. The cost ranges from free to $1.50. On the positive side, I've been able to find a local Compuserve number virtually everywhere I've been, including in Canada. I don't travel more than twice a year on average so hopefully someone else will add their "two cents".

I never heard this before (I am not saying it is wrong just that I never heard it), I brought an original 32MB DIMM which came with instuction leaflet from Psion and no-where did it say I had to reformat the C:/.  I installed it over a year ago and all has been good.  But hey if formating the C:/ will somehow make my machine faster or better I am up for it :-)

I've got behind with reading my Digests but have just discovered something - you may already know this anyway...

I was aware that one can snooze the alarm for 5 mins by pressing the space bar, and/or background it (+snooze for 5 mins) with the Tab key.  I've just found out that you can increase or decrease the number of minutes snoozed by single minutes using the "." and "m" keys respectively (as for increasing and decreasing numbers in number menu choices - e.g. date fields).

Has this been mentioned before?  I wasn't aware of seeing it anywhere

Subject: It is good to be back (but CopyAnywhere is mis behaving)

I deserted the Epoc world about 10 months ago. My Psion 7 was working OK but my 5mx screen cable had "bitten the dust".

I thought Epoc PDA were history and I moved to a Sony Clie 675c. Although this is a great little PDA with good software and MP3 etc, it just does not match the practicality of Psions (with keyboards)

I have dusted down my Psion 7 and found the crack on the 5mx screen cable (just need to get some of that conductive paint to see if a home repair is possible)

I noticed also that it is possible to create PDF's with PDFPrinter. (So much better than using nConvert)

The one "downer" is that when using CopyAnywhere (Win 2K professional and Psiwin 2.3.3) it keeps installing multiple copies. i.e. CopyAnwhere starts automatically at connection, when the Psion auto turns off CopyAnywhere stays open. When I then start the Psion again up pops another copy of CopyAnywhere. This goes on for ever.

Has anyone had this problem and found a solution.

From: Hoffman, Susan

Subject: Charges in US for Local Calls -

Itamar asked if hotels in US charge for local calls.  Most do charge, but you have to ask how much the charge is.  Some charge a flat rate for up to one hour of use.  Others charge by the minute, and those charges add up. Many hotels are also adding charges for "free" 800-type access numbers. Even those that are "free" will now limit the free use to 59 minutes.  If you are in a hotel that is charging more for one-hour-or-more use, set a timer and log off after 58 minutes, and then call again.  Most hotels will have this information on a card by the phone or in the directory of hotel services.  We always double-check at the front desk, as well.  Enjoy your visit -- when and where are you coming?  Remember that 4 July is a national holiday (great fireworks in most major cities).

Subject: Adieu

Alas, my 5mx has gone flakey for the third time in as many years.  This time, it is not the usual screen cable problem, but an extreme sensitivity to touch.  Even picking it up causes immediate, repeated soft resets and clobbered system parameters (e.g., time, date, and open file pointers).  I suspect a fracture (perhaps multiple fractures) in the motherboard circuitry.  Given its age and the likelihood of other material deterioration, I have decided to remove life support.

As I depart, I would like to express my appreciation to all who have contributed to the digest over the years.  Despite the occasional heated debates, I have come away better informed and my use of this once-trusty device was enhanced by all your contributions.

Carry on.
