Itamar,
I have used my 5mx and my S7 via Compuserve in US hotels several times
in the last few years. I've connected via the hotel phones or data
points using the 'old' travel modem and the Psion Card Modem (in the S7)
with variable success. My observation is that not all the local access
points are equally good and sometimes it varies from difficult to
impossible to get a good connection. But sometimes it will work first
time and never drop. Time of day is a factor too (5 am is usually
good!). The CS website gives a very comprehensive list and it's worth
printing out details for all the relevant towns you're in or close to,
to give yourself some choice! Also beware that not every town with the
same area code as your hotel is actually a local call! There is also a
CS Freephone 1-800 number which I have used successsfully. CS charge $6
per hour surcharge for that one but it is easily worth it to get a more
reliable link.
The hotels generally charge a dollar or so flat rate for each local
call. But if the connection drops you'll still be charged a dollar. So a
few dropped links can become more costly than you think! Some hotels are
said to charge for the 1-800 number but I never found that personally.
The short answer is - there is no short answer! I generally find I have
to experiment to find the best connection in any particular hotel.

I've just done the decent thing and added my signature to the petition to get the potential netBook Pro to run EPOC as an o/s option. I see there are now 585 signatures (including mine!) but I fear that's nowhere near enough to get anyone to take any real notice. So if you feel the potential new machine should include the great EPOC o/s as at least an option, get signing at www.petitiononline.com/nbookpro now!

I use gsm in the US through T-Mobile. They have very good service. I have myself been wondering whether to add GPRS to my line. I have not used it yet, but it is definitely available. Your UK enabled phone should be able to roam, T-mobile has agreements with several providers in the UK (if memory serves me correctly,I have seen on my phone Voda, BT and maybe another one).
With respect to the charges from the hotels, I have to agree with the rest of the group in that charges vary wildly. However if you are bringing your S7, bring your wifi card as there are a number of open and free hotspots where you can have high speed access for free. The one that immediately comes to mind is Bryant Park (behind the Public Library). There are other sites, and there is even a webpage that maps the coverage of these free access points. I'll have to do a Google search later to refer you to them.

Subject: Still modem trouble
Hallo, I am back from my holiday in South-Africa (Saw a shadow of a lion and the behinds of a zebra and a giraffe in a kind of Mega Zoo) and now it is back to class 0, as my travel modem is still not working.
Thanks Mark Deppe and Hanno for your tips. Yes, I tried a soft reset and after that I deleted commsdb.dat. and filled in the modem and internet details again. Still no success: received message "Timed out" and no connection with the server.
I have some questions:
1)My Dutch guide tells me to install ATZ at
Init.(reset)String. The English Modem guide mentions AT&F. Which is correct. How exactly do you reset in comms, with this ATZ or AT&F ?
2)Ringtones: I remember to have installed 4 and 4 as ringtime and delay time. After the reset this became 6 and 4. What is correct for Indonesia I was unable to find out. I get only blanc stares from the "technicians" of the telephone service.
3)Concerning dialling: My location jumps back to an mystical number in Jakarta all the time. Is it not possible to set my home number here once and for all (until I like to change it?)
4)Last I am afraid that my copper telephone line is very bad. A couple of days after my return we were always on line together with another person, when phoning ! Can this be of any influence? Also the line to my travel modem is rather long (a 15 m extension)
I would very much appreciate some help. Something must be wrong and I agree with the above persons, that it is not my modem, but the program. The modem reacts and seems to ring.
Thanks and regards

Subject: Re: Standard 5mx VS 5mx Pro? What's in a name...?
Owen,
POS Ltd. is selling 5mx Pros with the OS in english. As far as I know (folks, pls. correct me if I'm wrong here) there was never an official release of the 5mx Pro from Psion in countries outside of Germany. The german version was a special one introduced June 1999 for the german market only. Consequently no english version of the OS was officially released or further developed from Psion. In contradiction the german OS was upgraded twice [latest version 1.05 (319)]. From a hardware point of view there was also never a german version of the 5mx available.
I think that POS must have a special agreement with Psion to sell their machines with an english OS but consequently no resources from Psion Plc. are dedicated to further develop the english OS after they decided to move out of this market and the OS that POS uses for their 5mx Pros is tied to the machines that they sell and no official download of the english OS version is available somewhere as far as I know. Also the german branch of Psion does not further develop their OS therefore in my opinion we can only hope that Psion decide at some point to convert their OS into Open Source.
I don't know of Russian ressources for upgrading the RAM but from my own experience I can recommend D&G (http://www.pda-upgrade.20m.com/) where you can upgrade a 5mx to max. 28MB RAM or the 5mx Pro to max. 40MB RAM. If you deduct the 12MB RAM that the 5mx Pro needs for the
OS you end up with the same amount of RAM for both versions.

Hello All,
It'd be very much appreciated if you could provide the optimum modem + internet + dialup settings for the following configuration:
Using Web on a P5mx dialling up Demon Internet (0845 212 0666) through an IR modem of an Orange Nokia 6100.
I ask this as having gained a connection I cannot see where to extend the idle times, thus I am continually losing the connection. Do I set the idle time on the phone, the 5mx's system settings or in 'Web'?
Many thanks.

However, if you want help to automate the opening of the editor, finding the text and highlighting it, why don't you use MACRO5 (or another macro tool) to record the macro ? Please clarify exactly what you want help with and surely someone will be able to help you.
Re.: USA Email
Answer to: Carlos Rodriguez & Jim - Thanks, I do have a Compuserve Classic account. With Vodaphone my phone will work on any network in the USA that is the strongest, and T-Mobile has got GPRS (which according to customer service is brand new). That surely is good for emailing, but if a hotel has got cheap local rates, that would still be better.
Answer to: Clayton - Thanks. 35 cents is very little if I can connect for several minutes to download all my email.
Answer to: Susan - Thanks. I'll check in the hotels before using the lines. Anyhow, I will only use it for emailing so will not be connected more than 5 minutes or so at any one time.

Re. 5mx VS 5mx Pro - I can't answer you on your questions. However, I understand you have a broken 5MX which you can fix by buying a 2nd hand motherboard ? So is not a repaired 5MX with less memory better than a broken 5MX ? I think you are right in saying that there will be no more OS upgrades <sigh> so besides availabillity of one or the other I don't see any advantage either way.

Re. SPAM - Slightly off topic, but I just installed at work a program called "Spam Inspector" from GIANT Company Software. It first reads all your email folders and address book and you have to decide which addresses are "friends" and not. After that it quarantines all SPAM messages into a separate folder where you can check them at (ir)regular intervals. It works very well for me.
And to Ray Pyles, adieu, all the best and hope you will find the machine that will suit your purposes.

When I finally gave it a hard reset, the two vertical lines at the outermost edges of the screen 'lit up' black.
Although this didn't work for very long...
So I contacted Psion's warranty folk, and was given a warranty
number, subject to me getting documentation from Clove to confirm
their despatch date (which must have differed from the invoice date -
as there is almost a week between the date on my credit card bill,
and the date I received the Psion...)
But many hours later, just at bedtime when I tried it again, it was
fully working!
So, it is some weird aberration, so I shoul djust keep it? Or do
screen cable failures often give intermittent problems, in which
case I shoul dsend it off for the 2-3 weeks it takes to get repaired?
Any thoughts?

I've just discovered that Simon Quinn's EBook ( http://www.geocities.com/ebookepoc/ ) became freeware last November. So I've created a number of free eBooks in both Psion TCR, and in PalmDOC format. You can download them from: www.gawnsoft.co.sr
There are currently six novels and five non-fiction books there, and I'll be adding more, as I run out of things to read, and am forced to create more books.
While I'm here, I might as well remind you all about the SymbianOS/Epoc Wiki, which you can reach from the Gawnsoft

For folk who're new to Wiki's, they're web-sites where all the pages can be edited by anyone who's browsing them, and new pages are created automatically if you mention them when updating an

No, none of the Foxes were destroyed, as far as I know...
Actually, the nice people over at Foxpop (www.foxpop.co.uk I think) even built up a few from the spare parts inventory and sold off some time after the company took the dive.
Since they were never in ordinary stores there's very little chance of any showing up in a clearance sale.
Some show up from time to time in classifieds, but not often, and when they do you should expect to pay a lot for it...

I have made some tests on my 5mx Pro with 24 MB of RAM, and found the following after a hard reset and deleting the example files:
- German OS: used memory 1812 kB, free 12524 kB
- English OS: used memory 1176 kB, free 13160 kB
(numbers from System->Information->Memory)
In either case, this makes for 14336 kB (=14 MB) of total RAM. So it seems that there is always 10 MB reserved for the OS image. A "standard" 5mx has 16 MB of RAM, so you will in fact have 2 MB more RAM available in a standard 5mx.
From the numbers you also can see that in fact the english OS leaves _more_ free memory than the german one. For the moment I don't have any idea why. Maybe it's due to the fact that the german Pro OS includes Psion Web as integral part. There may be some overhead in the System directory as a consequence. (If you really want to know, I could investigate further.)

The only difference I am aware of between the german 5mx and 5mx Pro is that Psion Web is an integral part of the Pro OS. Other than that I haven't noticed any difference (but I didn't specifically search). As far as I know there never were any OS updates released to the public.
For the sake of completeness, here are the OS versions I have on / for my machines:
- English OS for the 5mx Pro: 1.05(250)
- German OS for the 5mx Pro: 1.05(319)
- German "standard" 5mx: 1.05(327)

If we assume that the OS image will always take 10 MB from the total amount of RAM, then you will in fact be better off by upgrading a standard 5mx to 24 MB, since the 32 MB Pro will give you "only" 22 MB of available RAM.
The advantage of the Pro is that you have the flexibility to switch between the english and the german OS (if you need to). It might also be possible to replace the EPOC OS image by Linux and thus have more free memory on the Pro than on a standard 5mx running Linux. (I am currently in the process of trying this, but for the moment this is pure speculation. If there is any interest, I can report back about my progress with the Linux installation.)

Subject: Pls give a chance to the netBook PRO Petition
I have just had a look at the petition signatures and found a number of 680.
Personally, I am extremely glad of the results and I would invite everybody - also those just having a revo or a 5mx/mc218 as well as a P800 or a 92xx - to give this petition a chance.
In fact, I do strongly believe that the more we will able to show how really vital the International Psion community is, the more chances we will have in seeing future development for our beloved machines.
The outstanding work performed by Yan Silvester (AKA Diem) includes one innovative possibility: giving a third party the opportunity to take over a job which P/T - perhaps - may not be willing to do.
I still do hope P/T will reconsider the whole matter after seeing the deep commitment of the whole community. I feel that we must be prepared anyway to consider other alternatives, anyway.
In fact, a more marketing-oriented third party may fully understand the potential of symbianboosting other smaller machines and therefore - who knows - a Symbian ER7 (Psionbrandless) netBook may establish a bridgehead for further operations. In this context, even smaller versions of the nB pro may be issued with ER 7 (perhaps a kind of a new coloured 5mx or maybe even a new sort of revo).
these ER 7 PDA would be excellent smartphone companions, either.
Often reality goes further than fantasy: could this be the case?
This is why I think that the petition should be furtherly promoted among P800, 92xx, 5mx/mc218 and revo users.
Therefore, I encourage anybody interested to do so as well as keeping up the very good work.
BTW, thanks everybody for being committed to this subject.

Hi everybody
To Michael and Itamar
Thanks for your various inputs.
Formatted C drive on netbook - no harm, but no apparent difference. It registered some 50mbs RAM free both before and after the operation. However, it neatly removed all those example files! BTW, I did install the DIMM with all batteries and external power removed. Not having a wrist earth strap, took off one shoe and sock and kept foot on metal desk leg - not a sight for the unwary!
The 5mx freeze is not linked to one program, and I tend to use only one or 2 at a time. However, I do keep HotKeys on in the background, and it may be a clash between it and another application yet to be identified - but no trouble for 4 or 5 days so, fingers crossed......
Am working may way forward through complete Psioneer archive, checking on things to do with netbook, in the hopes of steadily building knowledge before rushing into its use. It certainly emphasises the benefits of us all using explicit titles in our mailings!
For the management - Issue 12 starts in the middle; it appears that the first part has been lost. Don't know if it's recoverable, but thought you might wish to know. Thanks for the great value you bring to us all, week in and week out.

The one "downer" is that when using CopyAnywhere (Win 2K professional and Psiwin 2.3.3) it keeps installing multiple copies. i.e. CopyAnwhere starts automatically at connection, when the Psion auto turns off CopyAnywhere stays open. When I then start the Psion again up pops another copy of CopyAnywhere. This goes on for ever.
Has anyone had this problem and found a solution.
I have the same problem with CopyAnywhere. I have had as many as five little icons sitting in the lower right corner of my screen, and it seems to slow down or screw up everything else. The worst is Adobe Acrobat, which I can never seem to use after CopyAnywhere has been cloning itself. And then when I go to shut down the PC, CopyAnywhere freezes the shutdown. We are using Windows 2000 Pro with NT for the servers. The only thing I have found that works is to unplug the 5mx altogether -- that at least stops the duplication. Then I can right click on the icons to close them, or use Task Manager to stop the processes.
