Yes I have. Ad-hoc and peer-to-peer networking are the same thing (I
guess you knew that). Took me a while to get it working - but that was
all down to the firewall on my PC that I forgot to turn off initially!
I'll be writing a series of articles on this for FoxPop starting next

It is possible to download emails directly into any folder you wish. In the remote mailbox folder select the mails to download, press Ctrl+C (or Ctrl+X), go to the destination folder, then press Ctrl+V. (Sorry for the late answer, been somewhat busy lately.)

Dear Herold,
I assume your new notebook does not have a serial (RS232)port. A relatively easy solution is to look for a USB-Serial Adapter. They should not cost more than 30 USD and comes with software to let your Windows OS recognise it as a standard COM port. It may not have 100% compatibility with every peripheral or software out there so it might be a good idea to try before you buy.

Based on input from this forum, I now own a Nokia 6310i with T-Mobile
service. So far it works well. Now that I have a GSM phone, I'm ready for
Europe too, even if I just came back (again). When I first lived a few years

Well , I am afraid you will have to spend some money if you want something
that lasts and remains useful even after your Psion's death
Expect to pony up at least a buck or hundred or so for a replacement
My picks :
3jtech's Pegasus III Ir modem
Very solid performer , reported to be better than the original Psion ,
build-in diagnostics , runs off Psion mains/vehicle power adapter , alt 4
AAA-sized NiMH's ( tricle-charge inside modem !)
Available through AlphaSmart.com/AlphaSmart.co.uk and J & R (jandr.com)
Website : http://www.3jtech.com.tw ( user manual can be downloaded from this
site )
US Robotics Sportster ( serial , no IR )
A bit bulky but extremely robust performer , easy to fix connectors that
worked loose in the field
Good diagnostics
Available in both Classic ( 33.6k ) and V90/92
Get the Classic if you order one
Power requirements are more substantial than the Pegasus , you will need a
12-20 Volt 0.5 amp power source
US Robotics Courier
If you can get past the vast size of this one , this will never let you down
Yes , I know its size is an issue for many but it is relatively lightweight
and like the Sportster can run off an universal mains adapter ( you can use a
netBook adapter ! )
The extra features may be overkill for many , but I want to highlight some
that can be lifesavers if you are in the 'doggies
Online help :
No need to carry a manual in paper or CD-ROM format , the complete command
set and S register functions are explained on the build-in help screens
Diagnostic screens :
In addition to the normal diagnostic screen , a special screen shows the
results of the V32 terbo/V34/V90 lineprobe in the form of an ASCII histogram
Another feature is the speakerphone , you can actually use the Courier as a speakerphone ! ( albeit not a very good one )

Excuse me for being a bit unclear here , my idea for a budget nB was for a
somewat smaller , lower-specced machine capable of loading/running current
nB/s5mxpro images from CF/MMC and at a price point small businesses and
private users can afford ( around GBP 500-600 )
It could have WindowsCE 4.1 in onboard flash and able to load ER5 from

I'm pleased with my 6210e which is the previous model. It works very well, but in fringe areas it's not the best as it has an internal antenna, which is not as good as those that stick out. However for fitting in a pocket, it's much better.
I would expect a 3 band radio to perform slightly worse than a 2 band radio (as mine is), as the antenna is now a compromise for 3 rather than 2 bands.
I have heard that the 6310i has problems when sending faxes which does not occur when I send faxes with my 6210e. There is corruption visible in the received fax.

David is right of course. The C: drive on our EPOC machines is a RAM drive. When installing a DIMM module you _MUST_ remove all batteries from the Psion. This means you are hard resetting the Psion, so the C: drive will be "formatted" when the machine is powered up. If you installed the DIMM without removing the batteries and got away with it, you've had more luck than sense...

There are indeed two macros which can do it: one is Translauncher which allows you to select the dictionary with which you want to work (and has many other functions besides) - the other one comes with Extrabars and is called SpellCheck.

I have tried 2 USB-serial port converters, the latest from Proporter and completely failed to get PsiWin to connect with an IBM laptop. (Windows ME & XP) I have also v2.3.3 of PsiWin. This after years of using a 10 yr old Packard Bell plus W95 with PsiWin successfully to back up all sorts of Psions. I would be interested to hear if others have been more successful. I now exchange data or backup using a compact flash PCMCIA adaptor (available almost anywhere, particularly photographic stores), A similar adaptor copes with the IBM micro drive for Series 7s. The solution is obviously no good for Revos.

I would suggest buying a USB to serial port (RS232) adaptor.
This gives you the advantage of being able to use the adaptor for any
other serial devices you happen to have.
Belkin make them for large amount of money - Part no. F5U103 I believe
You can also buy them from Maplin (in the UK).
You will need a software driver for the PC - so make sure it is supplied
and suitable for the PC O/S (which I am guessing will be be WIN XP).
(Belkin have up to date drivers on their web site)

Subject: After Psion
I'm still very happily using my 5mx, synchronising to both my work and home PCs, keeping all my contacts and calendar, and using it for writing stuff, taking notes in meetings, even reading the odd e-book.
However, my machine has just had its third or fourth cable replacement & service at Pinnock Organiser Services in Streatham, London (www.pos-ltd.com), and I really think it can't go on forever.
So the question is - if I want the same functionality as a psion (keyboard, big screen, compatability with my PC, diary, word and database functions, touch screen, alarms), and maybe web access as well - what replacement should I go for?
And the other question is, how can I access Data and Jotter files on my PC - can anyone point me to an emulator?
Incidentally, the guy in POS was saying that they've got manufacturing rights for the Series 3, and are within a few weeks of tying up a deal with Psion's lawyers to start building a slightly updated 5mx. They're also refurbishing a large new premises down the road from their current office - so they seem to be doing well out of it!
Cheers

Re.: Psion vs Wince - I agree with Arents that WindowsCE is not all that bad. I suppose some of the programs we use regularly on our Psions will not be needed as CE has included them in their OS (conversions to/from for example). I am sure there is a lot of third party software for CE as well, some against payment, some for free. I think it will be more an adjustment in the mind than anything else.

As I said, beamed from my MC218, the title gets lost, no note, and wrong time (can be remedied by setting a false time zone on the T610).
And I guess you can not edit the Calendar note on your T610 either? Could be done on the T39!
> To-Dos/Tasks: sucessfully beamed over, Due date.

Not from the MC218. Maybe I did not explain correctly. The Task gets no title, but it looks like it shows up as a Note (that can not be edited on the phone). I can se Status, Priority and Due date on the T610 but the phone does not use these parameters. It obviously does not sort the Tasks in any structured order at all. And if you try to edit the task, the only possibility you are given besides editing the title is to add a reminder, although one was seemingly beamed over from the MC218.
And the other way around: a Task beamed from the T610 loses it only editable parameter - the reminder.
As I wrote in my posting, the T39 did not present any problem in this respect.

IMO, one of the more practical features of a mobile phone is that it gives you the possibility to get connected also when out in the open. But if the visibility of the screen is such that you have to stay indoors, then ...!!!
You do not mention the Note option on the T610. Is it possible for you to sync them with Outlook?

Subject: RAM Upgrade. Close, but no cigar!
Hi
A friend of mine has translated the Russian article which describes how to upgrade the RAM in a 5mx. (It'll be available shortly after som grammar and spell checking.)
Armed with this information, the temptation was too great and I attacked my old half-dead MC218 with screwdriver and soldering iron and stole one of its RAM chips. The 5mx goes crazy if it's upgraded above 28mb, so I decided to make life easy for myself by only upgradng to 24 as I don't know how to limit it to 28Mb if I install two extra RAM chips. It's not easy to remove a surface mounted chip, but I managed it by heating the legs along one side whilst lifting the chip with a thin blade. Once one side was loose, it was relatively easy to unsolder the other one. I don't know whether I overheated and damaged the chip though.
I could see that I needed a very thin tip on my soldering iron to be able to solder the chip to the motherboard of the 5mx, so before I went any further, I set to work filing a needle point on the tip of my iroda Butane soldering iron. (Note to self: pop by Maplins and buy a new standard tip before leaving Ireland.)
The next step was to open up my beloved and hitherto virgin 5mx. Dismantling went without a hitch except for fiddling a bit to remove the bit at the back which houses the battery compartment. I always have problems with this. All went well until I unscrewed the motherboard from the base and discovered that it has an oblong IC soldered across where our Russian friend had installed his extra RAM! The chip is shown in the photos on the site, but the text says this chip was missing on his machine. Well, it's there on mine and I have no idea what to do about it!
There wasn't much else to do than re-assemble the 5mx. Thankfully, this went well except for some fiddling to replace the battery compartment. It was with bated breath I switched it on and with a sigh of relief I saw and heard it spring to life. Then I used Navigator to unpack the Zip file of the C drive back to its rightful place, soft reset the machine and was back to square one. End of story so far... I now have an even deader MC218 (I wonder if it would come up with 8mb RAM if I assembled it?) and still have a working 16mb 5mx. Any ideas?
My addled brain seems to remember reading something somewhere about piggybacking the chips. Will this work? Can I simply solder the extra chip on top of one of the others? If so, does it matter which of the two chips I put the extra one on top of?
Does anyone know whether the Revo / Mako uses the same type of RAM chip? There's one more on that MC218 motherboard, and my Mako is much more in need of a RAM upgrade than the 5mx... I still haven't figured out how to disassemble the Mako to get at the motherboard though

Subject: Corrupted CF
Disaster - sat in my hotel in Tilburg printing up some show sheets and my netBook spontaneously reset. Retained preferences on C but the CF in drive D I was printing from is corrupted. And unfortunately it was my main data receptacle.
After the loose back-up battery contact scenario deleted all my files on C in Belgrade in the spring I have been keeping all data on D to avoid another mishap. So I have been working directly from my backup, but unfortunately do not have a back up of the back up! The disk guage is atill showing 30MB of information but the screen and directory tree are blank.
I have tried it in Drive E using 2 different CF adaptors and in my MC218 with same result. Have tried copying entire disk to another CF via the Menu command with no result. Have tried Checkdisk with following message :-
File Allocation Table Damaged
The two File Allocation Tables do not match at Index......
CheckDisk requires the two FATs to be the same, and repairs the problem by relacing damaged entries in one FAT with good entries from the other.
You must repair this problem before continuing.
I have started to do this but so far have fixed 500 entries with no end in sight and no indication of how many more to go. I was thinking this might delete entries but as all the files I was working from are retrievable from the print outs (thankfully) with no other files open I was hoping if any data was lost it would just be from these. Now I'm not so sure.
Luckily I have recent(ish) copies of my Personal Addresses and Agenda on my MC218
(My newly acquired Revo is blank at 80% battery - good job I'm still relying on the Ericsson) And I do have a copy of the backup from September(!) so things could be worse. But have lost my data file of useful digest tips which might have helped me out so hoping somebody out there has a solution.
The card is a Jenoptik 32MB with 1.4 MB free. I was printing via IR to a Canon BJC80 with another file queued for printing, and was working on another couple of spreadsheets. But otherwise nothing else was open. I have 41.7 MB free on Drive C - only have apps installed with .SIS files backed up on another CF. Have used this printer constantly since got the netBook over a year ago without incident. Battery on netBook was fine as had had it on charge overnight.
Anyone with any solution to retrieve the data please contact me asap.
Also any tips to avoid a repeat occurence. If CFs can corrupt like this will be keeping backups of my backups from now on Thought buying bigger Cfs was the way to go but now it seems more is the better idea!. But is there a better media to back up to? I have a microdrive but apart from loading my C drive onto it last September (thankfully) haven't used it as found it too slow compared to CF. But have heard of these corrupting as well. I thought CFs only corrupted when used with PCs to transfer data. I'm a PC free zone so thought I was immune to this problem - obviously not. Is there an actual fail proof method or have I just been lucky up till now?

Subject: WIFI Peer to Peer (Ad Hoc)
Hi All
I must admit to never being able to get the peer to peer wireless networking working. My set up was a Netgear WAP connected to a win2k server, a laptop with a Netgear wifi card in it and the netBook with a Cisco 350 card in it.
There were various FTP servers and clients running and although I could FTP files between netBook and laptop, it only worked with the server running. I had originally run DHCP but switched over to fixed IP just to rule it out of the scenario.
I would also be interested to hear if anyone was successful in getting this system running.
I decided on moving to Shetland that I would rely only on my netBook as my no1 computer. Oh dear! I cant get mail to go from the inbox, although the app is happy to receive email via my 6310i. I had someone send me a US Robotics modem from England. I had the forethought to bring the Psion modem adaptor. When connecting to the net I can hear the dial tone through the modem, but an error pops up on the Psion to say that there is no dial tone. I have tried a second PsiWin cable, but to no avail. In the end I have got someone to send me a laptop! Aaargh

An excellent description of two similar apps from Jack and Rolf. Well done. I use SaveMail and had been considering looking at the other, but now I don't need to take (waste) the time.
Thanks.

Thanks for your comments Trygve. I'm familiar with charging voltages of many types, but have so far not studied Li-ion. My preference to internal rather than external, is that Psion have already taken care of ensuring correct voltage and current to the battery being charged.
When I bought a caravan in 1992, I measured the battery voltage after a charge and was surprised to find that it was only 13.0 volts. When I phoned the manufacturer of the charger, he told me that the regulations required 13.0v as folk would use a mains hook-up without a battery being installed. This protected the florescent lights.
I'm building a motorhome on a Land Rover and doing my own electrics. My existing solar panel will give 18 volts, but I've not yet measured the current drawn by a Psion7/nB. I would expect a different current for charging only and charging while running. It's still early days yet.
>> Get a decent 12 - 15V converter. They're not that expensive...
I've got two Polyamp AB devices made in Sweden. 10-30vdc input with two 24v outputs, one with a 'V. ADJ' pot. They are probably floating as there is a strap between +ve of one and -ve of the other output. The wires to the terminals are capable of a few amps. They are labelled 'TYPE PC 50 A 24-24'. Suggesting 24 + 24 volts output and 50 watts.
I've also got a new 300w inverter, 12v to 230vac..
An alternative is to charge one or two 2 volt cells from the 12 volt alternator and add them to the 12 volt car battery when stopped for connecting to the Psion's input.
Any suggestions accepted.

Subject: New program - IconPatcher - launched
Dear All,
I've launched a new program called IconPatcher today:-
What is IconPatcher?
====================
"Patch/colour your Extras bar icons...!"
IconPatcher is a small program designed to easily let you replace the program icon for older or no-longer maintained applications with a colour one - mainly so that they'll look prettier on a colour ER5 machine such as a Series 7, netBook, or netPad.
The program icon is the one that shows in your Extras bar (and possibly elsewhere in your System folders depending on what the program is). I've already described - both on my own website (www.pscience5.net) and FoxPop (www.foxpop.co.uk) - how to do this manually but IconPatcher has a number of advantages over doing it this way:-
You don't need to use a hex-editor program such as FileDump to manually extract program UIDs.
IconPatcher will correctly preserve the UID and also all captions, capabilities flags (eg. hide from Extras, New File), and MIME information from the old icon - which the manual method won't (easily) do.
You can equally well use other icons (i.e. .aif files) as the source for the replacement icon you want to generate. This means that you can swap icons around from one program to another if you want to!
v0.90ί of the program is available for download. It's freeware - of course! ;¬) Thanks also due in no small part to Andrew Gregory for writing much of the core of this program. Thanks Andrew.
Best regards,
Martin Guthrie
