Hi,
Thanks a lot for the macro - I could never have written one myself. But I don't have SYSRAM1.OXH to run it. Where do I find this file? Could you post a link as well (and/or even send the file directly to me)?
Cheers
Astrid

Thanks for the post - very interesting.
I would be interested in seeing more about the unit but cannot find anything on the Psion site. Do you know when the unit is going to be released or where I can get further information from?
Thanks

There might be a case here for another poll.
What is it the majority actually wants from the EPOC device and what is a request of a minority?
I see the following items for polling:
What do I use on existing Psion for (and would not like to be without):
- Agenda (Calendar)
- Data (Data Base)
- Contacts
- Web / Opera
- Phone Management (SMS, Phonebook)
- Sheet (Spreadsheet)
- Word (Word Processor)
- RoutePlanner/CityMaps
- Agenda & Contacts PC Sync
- E-Mail PC Sync
- File Conversion and Transfer
- E-Book
- OPL
- Games
- Jotter (Notes)
- Alarm Clock
- Recorder
- SpellCheck
- Calculator
- Drawing
- ...
What hardware features do I really need:
- AA Battery Type - Removable
- Alkalines vs. Rechargeables
- Battery life of xx hours?
- Automatic Recharge
- B/W Screen vs. Color
- Keyboard
- Touch
- Sound
- Backlight
- Build in Phone
- Build in Camera
- Size - Revo vs. 5mx vs. Netbook
- Bluetooth vs. Cable vs. IR
- Printing
- Card - SM vs. PCMCIA vs.
- Instant On
- Screen Orientation
- ...
What software would I need in addition:
- ...
Anyone to add to the list and expand the "..."'s?
If there is interest I would volunteer to collect the feedback and analyze. However, I am not owner of a web page, so things would be simple and be running by mail.
Greetings

Re. nBook and ethernet - Thanks for the clarifications. I think that as I am satisfied with my MochaPPP connection and have a GPRS phone with me for connecting while on the move, I don't think I will need it. Both at home and in the office we have now ADSL and emailing via MochaPPP goes very fast indeed, while I hardly ever use my Psion for surfing the net. Accordingly no real need for the nB above my S7 either (a pitty <G>).
To All
Re. Netbook Pro - For me the main question is, will it do what I want it to do and will it have enough supporting software (professional as well as games and shareware) for me ? I am very satisfied with the S7 (nB) format and with one extra battery I can handle very long trips and flights indeed. I would probably prefer it above a plamtop like device without keyboard and with smaller screen.

Subject: Psion & T610
Hi!
Have raised a question close to this one earlier but I give it one more try.
When I by using IR beam a Task in Calendar from my S-E T610 mobile phone to my MC218, it enters correctly with alarm etc. But when I beam a To-Do in Calendar on my MC218 to the phone, the Task shows up with no subject but with the subject (probably) as an attached note (which is not supported as an enter option by the T610 phone). Due date, alarm, priority etc are transferred correctly, but if the Task has an attached note on the Psion, it is not transferred. I have heard from one Psionist (Wong Koi Hin) that if you beam Tasks from a NetBook, it is transferred OK.
Has anyone tried to send Tasks from a 5mx or a MC218 to an S-E T610 (or a E T68i for that matter) and managed to receive it correctly or does the same problem occur then? Any clue to what my transfer problem could be? BTW, I get a similar result when I try to beam Calendar entries. From the T610 it works fine, but from the MC218, the entry subject shows up as an attached note.

Subject: Psion replacement?
After trying just about every combination of computer/PDA I can imagine, I've come to the conclusion that there is no single simple replacement for the ER5 platform. I've tested the SonyEricsson P800, the Nokia Communicator, the Apple iBook, the Zaurus C700, a "Windows Mobile Computing" device (aka "Pocket PC")and a bunch of different Palms (Palm III, HandEra, Palm m505, Palm m515, Dana, Palm Tungsten T, Palm Tungsten C). There may even be a few I've overlooked.
My conclusion: ER5 still provides the best core functionality (Word-processing, spreadsheets, encryption, FTP, battery life etc.), but it's getting a bit long in the tooth due to a lack of wireless capability and ability to deal with standard formats such as Word and PowerPoint. For some people this is not an issue, but since I have to respond to customer requests sent in these formats (primarily Word & PPT), it is very relevant to me.
My solution to date has been to continue to rely on my ER5 devices for day-to-day business activities, but to augment it with a Palm. Data can be beamed quite easily between a Palm and a Psion, so I can easily shift documents from one machine to another.
I use the Palm (which I always have with me) for email, web-browsing, SMSs, appointments and short memos, but turn to my Psion when I have to prepare 'real' business documents in RTF format.
The PalmOS itself is currently too feeble and crash-prone to provide the core functionality offered by ER5, but the Palm does enjoy incredible support among software authors, and its abilities are slowly but surely improving over time. For example, I can now view native Word and HTML documents on the Palm, and at some point I should be able to view native PPT files on the Palm as well.
I recently spent two weeks traveling through France, and was able to keep both machines charged using battery packs which rely on 4 standard 'AA' batteries. There's no notebook on the market that comes close in this regard.
Perhaps this "two machine" solution isn't the best, but it works for me and provides the highest level of functionality while maximizing battery life and minimizing weight and size. Maybe there's a better "two machine" solution out there, but I haven't found it yet.

Peter Rand

I'm reading - and I haven't forgotten! :¬) I didn't publish anything in the last edition of FoxPop due to arrival of #2 son (predicted of course - but still somewhat time consuming!). However, I've promised Elisabeth the 1st article in the series in time for the next edition in September so there's no getting out of it. Haven't yet figured out how to fit it in with the further versions of ebc, a new program in the works (this month hopefully), more colour icons, a planned update for Clock5, other website maintenance, etc.!?! Still, I shouldn't be worrying should I? This is a dying platform, right?... ;¬)

Hi Rolf,
<< some digests ago I asked about a way of remapping Data to Infrared while retaining the switch function (i.e. when calling data again it will switch to the next open data file). ... >>
>I think it has to do with the functionality that's attached to the application silk screen buttons. Remap Data to the Sheet button and the button is now linked to the Data application rather than the Sheet application. What it inherits is the file switching function associated with the application buttons. Tapping on the Sheet button allows you to switch between the Data files you have open in memory.<
>The infrared silk screen button, on the other hand, opens a menu that allows you to select the infrared send or receive function. Map Data to the infrared button and the display of the menu is replaced by the instruction to open the Data application. Tap on the button and Data is launched, opening the most recently used Data file. When Data is already in memory it results in Data being placed in the foreground. And that's it.<
This sounds like a good theory but doesn't correspond with actual performance. When I use Macro5 (or another tool) to remap Data to Sheet the switching function is lost. If I map Data to Calculator (single app - no files) by modifying shell.ini I retain the switch.
Maybe you really can't fully map an app like Data to a left silk (or System or Extras) without a macro because you can't access the part of epoc where the information is stored. But I don't see that it has to do with the original layout.
My theory is that secondary remappers operate on top or independently of the original system. While ER5 seems to have a routine:
if area xy of screen/ key is pressed open app; if app already open bring to foreground; if already in foreground cycle to next open file.
Macro5 and co seem to use the same commands (except for the last bit) but they don't make use of the inbuilt ones. In that way they can easily access other areas like all the silks while the native mapping is only easily accessibe for the Extras bar via Control Panel.
To get around these limitations one needs either access to the inbuilt commands or a remapper/ macro that is a bit more complex. The first option is partly accomplished via shell.ini and hex-editor the second probably by Wolfgang Golder's macro (I'll report when I managed to run it)
Quite amazing how much response this thread has already got,
Thanks for all the contributions.

Subject: What I want
I'm happy with the Revo. Once the battery problem was resolved, even that worked better than the 5. I agree with Cyril Catt that Psion should "be able to to use and produce files in formats that can easily be transmitted to, and used by, other platforms." I've never understood why Psion Word produced files in a proprietary format instead of rtf.

Thgis is what I do. I never shut it off until it hangs.
One caveat: take any mice away, they might wake it up (I use os 9.2.1). Not that it's a great danger, with today's HDs, I'd say.

Subject: ebc updated to v1.05
Hello all,
Just a quick note to mention that ebc has been upgraded to v1.05. ebc adds colour support for Jason Kneen's ExtraBars. v1.05 adds the option of a colour ExtraBars startup screen and a help file.
I also added yet further colour icons and patches to the site a couple of days ago...
Best regards,

Edward,
Thanks a lot. I also followed your same route. But for some reason, my battery life has fallen off drastically. Looks like it is time to get an upgrade or fix.
