Subject: Re: Netbook screen calibration (various posts)
I have a suspicion that perhaps WinEPOC 2.6 (www.jssolutions.cz) on my netbook running might cause the same problem needing recalibration of the screen. I'm no programmer, but found that 'uninstalling' WinEPOC solved the problem. Whether it was just coincidence I don't know. I actually am quite taken with the WinEPOC idea, as an alternative system screen, (and the quasi-window$ interface has always amused me in an ironic sort of way - lookers on suddenly recognise a familiar environment and think you're 'relatively cool' [in their blinkered M$-eyes] rather than 'rather alternative') but this possible annoyance has certainly stopped me from registering it. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Dear Chris,
I know how frustrating it can be when a site can't be viewed or parts of it doesn't work on a Psion. Unfortunately more and more sites only supports IE.
You can use this link:
http://www.palmanac.co.uk/agreement.asp?download=klip.zip - it takes you to the PALMANAC SOFTWARE USAGE AGREEMENT AND DISCLAIMER section. If you want to skip that and go directly to download the file, use:

Reply to: David Steer
Dear David,
I would like to support your idea and see whether Psion Teklogix will take the bait, however, I have the following concerns/issues:
1. while the netBook Pro will have high-color screen, faster CPU and more memory (which is why i would want one), it is still based on ER5, which means it will not get support for Bluetooth and new protocols/drivers unless Symbian continues to develop the platform, which personally find unlikely. I realise based on past posts to this digest, there is a sizable number of people on this list who want a device that has the same OS they are familiar with and will run all of their programs etc, basically a continuation of exactly what they are doing right now. And you are proposing the chance to do so in a new and upgraded machine. Is this the audience you are trying to reach?
2. How much will this cost me? This is not a hobby for me, the devices i buy must have practical uses first and foremost and give what I personally feel to be satisfactory return on my investment in comparison to alternatives. I will be the first to admit I have made bad buying decisions in the past but I dont deliberately do so. My finances do not allow.
I love the netBook's combination of convenient form-factor plus great keyboard. And of course the wonderful OS. However, I never considered the netBook until the Malay netBooks became available on the market because the netBook's price previously was just too high for me as an individual consumer (your mileage may vary); I dont get subsidies from any company. therefore any new device I purchase must have a features/functions above what I currently use (otherwise why am I buying the device in the first place, for vanity, as a collectible?) and the price must be reasonable to
me; I am willing to pay a small premium for the device, but that's it.
What I personally would prefer is for Psion Teklogix to release information that will allow hoobyists and other interested entities to install alternative operating systems, write drivers etc. Psion Teklogix is in the business of selling hardware, not Symbian OSes or MS OSes, I dont see doing this affecting their marketshare in a negative way. Of course I could be wrong, I am happy to be corrected.
warm regards,
Koi Hin

Subject: I'm in Spain!
HI gang!
I arrived in Bayona, Spain yesterday (Friday) morning after a 5 1/2 day crossing from Crosshaven, Ireland. The crossing went well, but 48 hours of force 7 winds made it a bit tiring. Thankfully, the boat took it well and apart from a shackle on the self-steering gear (repired with a temporary lashing), nothing broke.
I'll be cruising the Galicia area for a week or two before I go on to Portugal and the Canaries. I'd like to meet any list members in the area, so please send me an e-mail or give me a call or SMS at +34 620520079
PS. I bought a Movistar SIM card for my phone and am using Movistar's ISP. However, it took a dozen tries before I was able to get my e-mails earlier today. Several times I was disconnected whilst Email was halfway through getting the headers and other times I got dumped off after exactly 19 seconds. Can anyone comment on whether this lack of reliablilty is normal? There is a big regatta on at the moment and apparently the king (of Spain) is here, so I suppose the local GSM nodes may be a bit overstretched...
PPS. Apologies to those list members who are awaiting private e-mails from me. I'll try to get around to you all within the next week or so.

Reply to Chris Hendley,
Dear Chris,
in your message to Rolf Brunsting you wrote:
CH>I have just bought a new Revo Plus, and the batter life is 6 to 6.5 hours according to ChaDis. Unless the occasional alarm sounds are dramatically draining the battery, this seriously conflicts your 8-10 hours estimate.
Rolf is not necessarily wrong, especially if he was referring to the original 8 Mb Revo, rather than the Revo Plus. The Revo Plus actually draws more current when in use (apparently due to its larger memory). I own both device and have chaDis installed on both devices, and on my 8 Mb Revo it says about 8.5 hours while on the Revo Plus it is about 6.5 hours. Since both of my device has seen heavy use, they may defer somewhat from 'pristine' devices out of the box.

Subject: Re: Motorola Leaving Symbian (OT)
To those following the above thread,
my thoughts on the matter: I think there is nothing inherently wrong in having one company have a larger share in Symbian, as long as they cannot make decisions unilaterally. It would not be in Nokia's interest to move Symbian into directions that conflicts with the interests of the other partners as it defeats the purpose of Symbian in the first place, that is, a common platform where applications can interoperate, developers need only develop once, and not worry about migration issues etc.
Whether Nokia chooses to sell off some of its shares is not really of consequence. But to suggest that Nokia will sell its shares to bring in new partners is not likely. My current understanding is that Symbian is still seeking additional funding, probably from its current investors. If a new investor wants to join Symbian they will probably pump in additional money and not acquire existing shares.
What I personally like to see is Symbian exploring the avenue of having their OS on PDAs/communicator devices rather than concentrate solely on smartphones. The OS is fully able to fulfill this role, it isn't as if they have to put in substantial additional developments. The P800 is a good example of a full featured PDA, if you take away the phone capabilities. Could they be worried PDA manufacters are going to muscle in on the lucrative mobile phone market? Also, Symbian does not seem to be particularly active in promoting the licensing of its OS beyond the investors, which I thought would be one of its primary goals. There are strong contenders for mobile phones in Asia besides the usual suspects and they can be given a great boost in their global competitiveness if they can use a common platform like Symbian. Or is this a case where the big boys only want Symbian for themselves, a kind of technological and branding edge? If this be true then Symbian may eventually lose market share through the reversal of fortune of the current heavyweights.
Symbian, whether originally intended, is also competing with Microsoft to become the de facto platform for mobile computing. I personally believe in order to maximise their chances they have to seriously look into promoting their licensing outside of the consortium, and truly make it the platform of choice for everyone in mobile computing.
Cheers,
Koi Hin

Subject: EPOC DIGEST V1 # 332 (13) psion 7 calibration
My experience after several years use of a Psion 7 is that one important cause of calibration trouble is loosening of the internal fixings due to constant use of the power plug and socket.
Once broken the internal parts can shift relatively with any shock causing calibration changes.
The solution is to use a docking station which uses the alternative base power entry.
I have been using my Psion 7 for several years this way with only occasional calibration movements, usually easily cured with a sharp tap on the casing.
In my case opening and shutting the case is not to blame as I leave my machine open all the time.

Thanks to everyone who mentioned Martin Guthrie's colour patch for Palmtop Money (which I already have). Yes, it does make it more pleasant to use but I was really talking about a full colour makeover rather than just colourising the .aif files e.g. debit transactions in red, account tabs in different colours, scheduled transations in another colour, coloured graphs etc.

Subject: T610 used with a Psion
I notice a few digestees are now using the Sony Ericsson T610. I'm possibly looking at a much smaller alternative to my "house brick" 9210 in the near future so I have a few questions on using it with an ER5 Psion:
Presumably it can easily be set up to use fax and data with a Psion? If so, I'd like to configure a modem setting for it on my S7 right now so I'd be grateful if someone could post the modem settings here.
Does the "sychronise with phone" menu option within the Psion's Email app work with this handset i.e. can you send SMS and transfer received SMS to the Psion?
Does it have a handsfree speakerphone?
Does the "Phoneman" app support this handset?
To me, this handset looks like a very attractive modern companion for a Psion. I used to use my S7 along with a Nokia 8210 - a great little phone in its day and wonderfully compatible with a Psion but it lacks modern features such as MMS, Bluetooth, GPRS and a speakerphone, features I really want. Alas, my supposedly top of the range 9210 also lacks this lot, apart from the speakerphone! Also, a T610 is a lot less weight to carry around.

Love may be blind, but lust isn't...
I don't have much interest in lingerie myself. In my eyes, the sexiest thing a girl can wear is a big long baggy T-shirt (preferably one of mine) and nothing else. Makeup, high heels and lingerie do nothing for me.

This sounds like a good program I was wondering if maps can be added such as online maps of of the united states and if it is possible to do searches or get directions from it.

This is interesting and first I have heard of it. In my Psion 7 since I multitask with it I usually plug it in after 4 hours when it dipps beneath half and edges toward empty. One thing that I noticed is that sometimes the Psion 7 gets false readings from the backup battery and will display an annoying message saying the backup battery is low. After a soft reset it is fine.

Hi
I had a Diamond Mako that worked great even after I dropped it and had to fix it so closed correctly. I had the Diamond Mako a little under a year before I purchased a Psion 7 ( couldnt afford a netbook). It was used and works like a charm. I updated the memory and have bought programs for it. I have used it heavily know for more than 6 months and have noticed no problems. I have always leary of the 5mx because of all the screen failure problems I have read about in the digest and other places so I probably will never own one and no I am very happy with Psion 7.
