To prevent RMRzip from (trying to) reopening the last used zipfile,

which is problematic if it has been moved or was on a disk no more present.

Subject: FontMachine and the disappeared system folders

Richard,

I have been using Fontmachine for some years now and have not had any trouble that I can attribute to it.  So here goes the explanation: the System folder is the largest folder in the system and, as such, takes the longest to read into the Directory dialog.  By eliminating this folder tree from that list the dialog comes up much faster (on my stsrem about 80% faster!).  Some of the built in applications are designed to behave in this way.  The work around is to save the file in an accessibly area and then move it using the system screen.

Subject: IR Backup

I recently came across IR to USB cable, basically for free after rebate.  I thought this would be a good solution for backing my Mako, S5, S7 and now Palm Tungsten T.  Unfortunately I have not been able to figure out how to backup my Psion devices with PsiWin/EPOC Connect.  There seems to be a way to manually transfer files but I have a 128MB CF card that would take too long to replace all of the files.  Has anyone managed to make this connection?

Why use WiFi with a Psion in a situation where you could use a PC/laptop/Mac?  Even if you can get a fast connection speed, you're still using Web or Opera on a much smaller screen.

In System preferences the system folder *is* enabled and the folder *is* displayed in the normal System screen.

Any ideas or workarounds, anyone? <

Save it somewhere else and then move it. If you often have to address the System folder get yourself a file manager. There is Navigator (commercial, including zip), RMRFile (shareware but almost no restrictions in unregistered version), Psion Commander (freeware by Wolfgang Golder but a bit slow), Filer (shareware, less extensive), 3T (too basic) and probably some others.

I don't think so - the original apps won't display the system folder outside the system screen - whatever else you might have or have not installed.

What has Macro5 to do with zip files? And what could nConvert possibly do? I mean, it might look for nZip or try to convert but insisting on Navigator seems to be exotic! (Settings in Extrabars are correct btw.)

I did - but it didn't change a thing.

That works for files on system screen but not for zip files within an archive.

That file is still there (even a backup) but won't help. Neither does a renstall.

> Have a look at the Help file/ Archive types /card:  Zip WITH icon preference might be more easily recognised by RMRzip!

Well, the drawbacks (file sharing) have been mentioned but it would only have worked for new files anyway.

> HTH <

Unfortunately not but thanks for trying.

In the end I created a new system folder, installed RMRZip first thing and then moved everything else over from the old one. Problem solved. But since I had tried a reinstallation on the old folder (which didn't work) and really moved everything from the old (except RMRZip) to the new I still haven't the faintest clue to the culprit.

Answer to: David McCorquodale

Re.: Transfer of Psion Data - DATA files you can export to comma separated text files which you can import in almost any DATA program on a PC or Apple. Your Contacts file you can export to a .vcf file which I believe is also compatible with other DATA programs (but not sure, never did it myself).

Answer to: Alan Morris

Re. PsiWin & Micro$oft - I believe you that they did it with Lotus, which was a major threat to their spreadsheet program Excel (I still use Lotus 123 which IMHO is far superior to Excel). But do you have proof that they did it with Psiwin / Psion ? I think in the world of Windows OS the connection with Psiwin / Psion is but a miniscule part not worth their while wasting money, time and effort on.   Furthermore I believe there is a fair share of "Microsoft bashing" going on around here. But in the end they are a commercial Company and the fact they made the chatrooms available for free does not say they have to give such a service for free to the world forever. Maybe a change to a system where you have to register and pay something will allow the chatrooms to continue in the future in a safer and more acceptable way ? If Psion would have been half as commercial as Microsoft they would have succeeded in the USA and the Psion's would still be around today.

LOL for y our other message about ASKING THE DIGEST. But what program converts Contacts back to DATA (I don't need it, but just out of interest) ?

Answer to: Gary Jenkinson

Re. Transferring Psion Agenda & Contacts - You don't have to do anything at all with Outlook but to start it. Just synchronise your Psion with it, and than synchronise your PocketPC with it and close Outlook. It is really rather simple once you have set up the synchronising details.

Answer to: Edward J. Curtis, Jr.

Re. Psion Dacom Gold Card - Your card might be out of order or your settings might be incorrect. If you send me your details I'll check them with mine.

Unfortunately ,this will never happen because of intellectual property issues , unlike the s3mx , the s5mx contains a large amount of third-party IP , especially in the OS and applications , wich will make a transfer of the manufacturing rights very difficult to say the least POS tried to get the manufacturing rights for the ARM/EPOC32 machines , but failed  because of this issue

I'm a bit late to jump onto the latest bash M$ rage, but...

Does anyone know what the difference is between Windows for workgroups V3.1 and 3.11?

(Note: WfW 3.1 was not released in all country versions, so some only had Windows 3.1 and WfW 3.11, never the WfW3.1)

The ONE big change was that a single DLL had been patched. A couple of NOP's or similar 'do nothing' commands had been added so that some of the code had shifted to a new place in the file.

There was only ONE reason to do that, and it was not to fix something, for they didn't add or changee the functionality of it...

Between the launch of WfW3.1 and 3.11 IBM released OS/2 for Windows.

In short, this meant that you installed OS/2 on a Windows PC but were still able to run the Windows programs because OS/2 would start the Windows subsystems needed. But to do this, and not break Windows(in case anyone would want to start it by itself) they needed to patch one DLL when it was run. This patch was just to overwrite a few locations with new values.

When M$ changed the DLL, that patch crashed horribly...

Yes, IBM should have found a better way to do it than to mess with the internals of a DLL, but...

So, yes I would believe it if someone told me M$ was messing with PsiWin...

Another point...

OS/2 have the HPFS(High Performance File System, true support for long filenames, auto sorted and defragmented, fast...) but did you know that M$ was the creator?

They're still getting royalties for every OS/2 license sold!

During a seminar I attended A M$ snotnose told me that HPFS was hopelessly flawed. I asked him what the flaws were(which he couldn't tell because HPFS is just about the only software M$ got right), and when was M$ going to fix their mistakes?

The bloke, who claimed to be a programmer, didn't even know how HPFS works... (But were still willing to lie)

Item: Windows have had support for 'Installable file systems' for a long time, but the only ones ever used is CDFS and network drives. Do you know why?

The M$ File Manager, and then Explorer to name a few programs have been optimised to work directly with local disks, and NOT go through any IFS driver.

So yes, it's also possible that PsiWin is flaky because of the numerous bugs existing in Windoooze.

OR it could be because of bugs in PsiWin itself...

:-)

I don't suppose you can display an analogue clock on the Revo+??

But thank you, the 24hr clock thing has been bugging me since I had to do my first (and only) hard reset in two years. Something that Micro$oft can only dream about  ;o)

In Epoc you have (as the programmer) the choice to make the system-folder availible in the file-dialog or not.

The browse-dialog seems to take over this setting.

E.g: If you start RMRZip (this has the system-folder enabled in its open-dialog) and you go from this to the browse-dialog you see the system-folder.

Hi Simon

I would be certainly very interested to know what is happening here. After year of trouble free e mail use I have over the last few weeks had countless e mail crashes. I have used both an S7 and NetBook with both the travel modem and an Ericsson SH888 mobile. It is now such a problem that I have almost thought of abandoning use of the Psion.  I have tried deleting the e mail folder and then replace it from a "healthy" machine which seems to have given me a few days successful mailing but the problem has returned. My isp is which.net. I have not tried asking their advice. Perhaps I will.

Tony
