For Victor,

>>I have a small Canon 8MB CF card. It came with my MC218. I´m sure it

used to work. However, I´ve reformatted it on my PC. (with FAT, 12 bit...)

Now both my MC218 and Series 7 do no recognize it anymore. Anyone any idea

how to straighten this out ? EPOC says the disk is simply not present.

Under

Windows I can read and write the same disk. Reformatting in EPOC is not

possible since it´s not seen at all.<<

I've had similar problems in the past, and only managed to solve it by

re-formatting the CF card in my wife's Canon digital camera. I don't know

if this helps...

I actually have a question myself. My backup method involves running a

small OPL backup program on my 5mx, transferring the resulting folder to

my netBook via infra-red, then using Chris's FastBackup program to back up

my netBook to a CF card. This generally works very well, however I

recently noticed that if an empty file is present in the backup folder on

my 5mx, transferring this by IR causes the netBook to perform a soft

reset; this is typically caused by having used the Symbian Text Editor,

which often (always!) produces the file "c:\documents\editor.txt", which

is left empty if you use the "save as..." command. It's not a serious

problem, but it does mean that I have to be careful to check for the

presence of such files before performing the IR transfer. Has anyone else

noticed this problem?

Cheers, Ian.

Hi Itamar,

I bought my Malaybook from Christoph Pulster and he still seems to have some left (www.pulster.de) . The original source is www.sitashop.com , but they are known to send the expensive computer in a plastic bag ! Mr. Pulster packs de Malaybook in a very big box with a lot of tape. He also gives 2 years of guarantee.

Why do people want the original Netbook ? I agree with you that it does not seem to be necessary. I think it is, because they prefer the official Psion guarantee. I chose the Malaybook from the list 7, Netbook, Malaybook, or chip tuned 7 / Malaybook. It has the power of the Netbook, but the lowest price of all options (I did not want to buy a second hand machine). There are a lot of people who buy the Malaybook together with the Netbook personality module. Now, actually, that is a choice I never quite understood.

The memory for the Series 7 does not work on a Malaybook, but the 32 Mo memory chip for the Netbook does work. I am planning to buy one from Pulster, together with a WLAN card.

The OS for the Malaybook is in RAM, just as it is the case with the Netbook, so you can completely crash the Malaybook.

Yours sincerely,

Thomas VAN DER ZIJDEN

Nicole,

>> I replaced my Psions (5mx, Revo, Mako) by the UX-50.

Could you give us a review of the UX50 & how it compares to the 5mx?

It certainly looks impressive, but I'd be interested to know what it's

like for someone ised to the Psion.

Cheers,

Ray

Re.: Cost of new machines - Yes, get one of the last few Malaybooks around for a lot less !

Answer to: Nicole Carbonara

Re. Sony NX 50 - Hi, how are you ?  I had a look at this machine at the airport some weeks ago. It is very small but the keyboard is not really a keyboard but more like the thumbboard on my NX73. Can you really type on it like before with your Psions ?  As to the software, I think that if yo invest in some third party software for the diary, database and word processor the Palm machines can be improved considerably.

Subject: Agenda Help / Backups Again

Hi All

Thanks for the help on setting up the Agenda to show the To Dos on the left page and the time slots on the right. As it happened, a few hours after sending in the request for help I found the exact solution in one of the example files!

Backups continue to frustrate me. Is anyone on the list backing up one file automatically each day? I have tried a couple of pre-written macros from Pascal Nicolas' site. I can't get one to work and the other doesn't close down the file if it is open. The idea was to run it with CronTab. I looked at Ralf Sprengers' Backup app, but this only backs up a single file from C: when you choose the single file option. I want my file on D: because it fits in with my theme! If I wasn't such a bonehead I could probably write something in OPL for use with Chris Handley's FastBackup. All it has to do is the following: -

See if D:\My Stuff\Diary2003 is open

If it is close it

Copy it to E:\Backup replacing the last one in there

CronTab could do the clever timing bit if necessary

When I see apps like Psion Commander, RMRFtp, nFTP, RMRFile I wonder why someone didn't write a backup app with a similar sort of interface, i.e. two windows. You could highlight what files you want to backup on the left and where you want to put them on the right, give the strategy a name which is saved for future use, and then set it up to run then or later. I suppose that most people backup to PCs so it was never needed. I am desperately trying to get rid of mine, but it isn't easy!

About to try taBackup!

Completely in agreement with Itamar.  After all, in today's setting, more and more the phones are trying to emulate PDA's and the PDA's are trying to emulate phones.

Before you know it, it will all converge and the Psion will be left behind.

We need to keep ourselves updated on what is developing and this forum is one great way specially with the very knowledgeable contributions on people like Itamar, Rolf, Kevin, Owen and all others who have no qualms about sharing their knowledge with the rest of us who are willing to learn.

Hi all,

I recently experienced a problem with Agenda

Program starts to open file then generates the following error message:

<<...OLE_Obj...>>

I normally back-up every day, however this happened on the one day I ran out of time & did not run backup.

Does anyone know whether this is recoverable as I have lost a full days diary

Any help will be gratefully received

Subject: Returning to the fold

Now that I have proven to myself that I can move onto Palm if/when Psion is a memory, I find myself moving back to my 5mx more and more and find myself hoping that the the POS venture turns out to be more than a dream and that they choose EPOC rather than Palm for the OS.

Not sure exactly what it is that is not working out for me  but suspect it has to do with the fine keyboard on the 5mx (not s good as the Dana and far better that the Treo) combined with the pocketable size of the 5mx.  The Makos are also preferable though the battery problem (both machines despite having been upgraded in Canada) relegates them with the Classic 5 to a role of backup

while one of our 5mxs are off for a cable replacement.

The processors on my two Palm machines are inadequate (I have 500 smallish word files I am working with) and the spell programs are poor.

Will still work with both platforms but Psion will be my main squeeze as long as they last.  If POS doesn't come through may have to learn how to use (and trust) ebay.
