Subject: Opera on nB
I bought a nB some time ago. Recently, when my 7's power skt. became loose, I started to use the nB. E-mails OK and anything else also OK.
I've used Opera to display the occasional e-mail that arrived in Email as html text code - ie not as an attachment, but text with visible html code mixed in and also received attachments that were html or pictures.
Today for the first time I used Opera to connect to a web site with the 6210e active after downloading e-mails. I got an error - Reason code: KERN-EXEC and Reason number: 3.
Any suggestions, as Web on the 7 gave no problems.

Thomas,
<<Still : I have heard from clients of Sita that they sent the Malaybook in a plastic bag ! Not my cup of tea, such a shop.>>
Mine from Sita (two of them) were extremely well packed. Lots of bubble wrap in a rugged cardboard box. Not professional looking - more like the packages I wrap - looking towards function rather than esthetic- I am constantly being accused of over-engineering everything I touch.
I am well satisfied at the packing. my only complaint is that the UK power units didn't magically transform to US units on the way over.

Chris,
<<An alternative view is that their marketing department sucked really badly sometime after the Psion 5 appeared, so that they simply couldn't sell enough units - despite having a (generally) superior product.>>
I can remember the day my Classic 5 arrived. I had had my 3a for a long time - the 8 megs of memory and new keyboard had me highly excited. I remember my heart falling when I turned the thing on. I couldn't read the d----d screen.
I moved about in the house until I found a spot with better lighting where it was almost fully readable.
I learned to love the 5 despite its terrible screen and frequent trips to Psion USA. The 5mx was better - more memory faster and a better screen though nothing like the competition. Still had (and having) to deal with trips to the shop.
I posit gently that marketing almost had to be to the technically oriented who were familiar with the Psion product line and could appreciate the giant leaps as they occurred. I remember playing with the 5mx at an office depot. With the lighting in the place you could hardly read the screen. People were passing it by to check out the color screened Wince keyboard machines(then available).
Marketing here (the US) was sporadic at best. Sharp was putting forth a better effort with their Zaurus (newspaper ads etc.) but (IMO) their underpowered processor was their downfall. It was a better machine than the Palms (IMO) and far inferior to the Psions but with a much better screen.
I don't think either machines were as directed to the mass market as well as Palm.
I hope that Psion, in some form or another, continues to exist. For us technically oriented (nerds? anoraks?) there is no better machine, despite its many warts.

David Lir
<<I bought my 2 MnetBooks for $258 each (from Sita) back in early March, so the MnetBook has actually RISEN in price - though it now comes with a modem and WiFi card.>>
They still have the package for $258 but it's marked sold out as is one other bundled option (I forget what it contained). I like the gold Card modem that came with even though it works just fine with my IR Modem. It will make web browsing easier.
<<It's still expensive at $379 (for what you get) when compared to the MnetBook at $450 which at least has a nice colour screen, relatively fast processor, modem, WiFi card and superior OS.>>
Absolutely true. But the fact that the MBook at $450 is a fantastic buy doesn't change the fact that the Dana is a lot of computer for a small amount of money. They designed it to make out on a mass market approach (their vision is school systems with a computer on every student's desk). High volume, low cost to be attractive to a large market (school systems with tight budgets).
<<there's really no need to bother with rechargeables with a Dana, IMO. Except perhaps environmental reasons.>>
Actually with the way most people use the machine (it's not a pocket computer) the mains connection is great. It has an excellent battery charging system.
No worry about overcharging etc. so plugging it into the mains for a few hours or overnight when the battery bar starts going down and you're up and running for a long long time. The world traveling types using Danas, and there are some who appear on the AlphSmart community forum, carry AA's for the emergency (away from mains or being someplace where the mains power is not compatible).
The battery access is via a cover plate held on with small screws. It's not really that well set up for battery changes like the Psion products
are.
<<WordSmith *is* excellent - I still miss a couple of its more minor features since moving over to EPOC. But did Blue Nomad really widescreen enable WordSmith - just because you badgered them? ;) >>
You know the urban legend about the kid who hit the power pole in New York and all the lights went out for three states around? It may be like that. For many months, every opportunity I had, I mentioned the need for Dana screen compatible WordSmith. I complained to AlphaSmart (AlphaWrite is a scaled
down version of WordSmith) and to the WordSmith EList. I finally bought (registered a version) of WordSmith for the Dana to match my registration of
WS on my Treo. The WordSmith and Snapper elists have the programers responding to requests from users. Most
apps are constantly being updated. After a number of months of complaining, I was sent a Beta. It worked great and a month later it was offered as an added feature to the software. Blue Nomad and the Snapper people are
extremely proactive and constantly working with users. Did I cause it to happen? I hit the pole with my stick (again and again) so I at least was part of it <S>.
<<Is SnapperMail widescreen enabled?>>
Both M/S and SnapperMail are wide screen enabled. That's what was so frustrating about WordSmith. Many programmers are making their Palm OS apps Dana friendly.
<<I agree 100%; but it is still quite amazing what you can accomplish on a little Palm.>>
That's why I say if Psion goes away, I can make do with Palm. The processor problem can be solved with money. Just buy a top of the market machine. A good pocket form Palm with an external keyboard and a Dana as an adjunct machine would work fine. But here's hoping that I live to see my mid-90's and my Psions are still functioning at that time. Pass them on as working curiosities to my great great grand kids.
<<That I didn't know! After hearing glowing review after glowing review of the Dana's keyboard I had come to the impression that the Dana keyboard is better than the netBook's. It's good to hear the opinion of someone who has both machines and who word-processes so much.>>:
You have to remember that I taught myself to type on an old Underwood when I was about 10 years old. Then I acquired typing skills on type 15 and 300 TTY machines in the telephone industry. Then to computers with a IBM Selectric somewhere in between. All of this to say I am a hunt & peck typist and only use two fingers one hand, 1 finger on the other. So I'm not to be taken as an expert on keyboards.
You know what the NBook keyboard is like. The Dana is a bit bigger but the keys are cheaper and feel it (it is an inexpensive machine).
<<You should be able to buy the NETBOOK PRO's battery soon - for approx. 12 hours of runtime. Still considerably less than the Dana though.>>
We'll see how I manage - I plan to integrate the MBook into my arsenal. Treo for carrying around agenda and address book as well as Palm Reader (I'm down
to three word files on the Treo). 5mx for my email, primary data needs; Sheets, Databases, poetry files, etc etc. The Dana for maintaining my elist (SnapperMail supports BCC just fine on Earthlink). The MBook will primarily be used for editing my two magazines, preparing mss for submission, and all large scale (3 & 4 hours at a crack) word processing jobs. I also see myself using the MBook for limited browsing.
<<I considered picking up a Dana for one of my kids ->>
My first impulse is to say yes, a great machine to introduce a kid to computers. But thinking about it, I suspect if you really want to get a kid
to takeoff, get him a high powered Windows machine (yuck! but it is the world we live in) to allow him the room to learn. For word processing etc in
school, the Dana is a great choice but I would want my kids (hypothetical - mine are long grown up - I have my first great grand child) to push the envelope and the Palm OS envelope is too small to promote real growth (IMO).
<<The Dana is a nice machine which is let down by its OS, IMO.>>
Palm is let down by its OS - that's why they're coming out with OS 6. There will be small machines for the new OS and eventually Dana will slap in a
higher powered processor, configure if for the new OS and take off.

Subject: Repeat Agenda Entry
I am trying to have an Agenda entry repeat on the last Wednesday of every month. In Menu/Entry/Set Repeat: I select 'Monthly by days' as Type; '1' for Interval; '28/01/2004' for From; check the Repeat forever box' and 'All occurrences' for Show.
After clicking the More button: I select 'Last' for Occurrence in month; 'Wednesday' for Day in week; then OK.
The entry then appears on the 4th Wednesday of each month even if the month has 5 Wednesdays! I've gone back and changed the Occurrence in month to 'Last' again, but the entry is still on the 4th Wednesday instead of the Last Wednesday.
If, in the More window, I click the "Set day' button, then the 'Repeat on above day' changes from No to Yes and the 'Number of days set' changes from 1 to 2 (I don't really know just what those 2 items mean - I've noticed that selecting 'Fourth' for Occurrence in month, "number of days set' changes from 1 to 2, but back to 1 if I then re-select 'Last'). Then the entry appears on the 4th Wednesday of each month plus the Last Wednesday on months that have 5 Wednesdays. Is this convoluted statement of my problem clear?
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Dear Ian,
It means that the email has a high priority. There are 3 priority
levels; low, normal and high. You can recognize the priority this way: Low: the envelope will be coloured
Normal: the envelope will be white
High: the envelope will have the red exclamation mark in the middle

Subject: HP Photo Printer
Hi.
I went ahead and bought the HP Photosmart 7660 printer I was talking about, but had trouble installing the drivers.
The instructions said I should run the install software before connecting the printer to the USB port. When I did this, the Toshiba churned for a while, checked my system and decided my version of Internet Exploder was not new enough! It requires at least IE 5.00.3313.2101. What I have installed is apparently 5.00.2920.0000! Only a couple of decimals different, but enough that the install software refused to install the printer drivers.
I wasted couple of hours at an Internet Café only to discover that the IE upgrades that would run on my Win2k system worked by connecting it to the Internet and downloading and installing the needed files. As I live on a yacht, get my e-mail with a Psion and have no intention of ever connecting my laptop to the Internet, this was not an option for me. I find it incredible that HP take the liberty to dictate which Internet browser their customers should have installed or that they regard an Internet browser an essential piece of software for using a printer.
I did in the end manage to install the printer drivers and get my new printer working, but it was not easy and required some serious trickery which would be beyond most computer users. I haven't been able to install any of the imaging software that came with the printer though, but this isn't a major problem as I have PhotoShop.
Does anyone here have any advice on calibrating my new printer to PhotoShop? It seems to have a serious case of the blues. Everything appears a lot bluer on the prints than on screen. Photos that I have previously taken to camera stores for printing have not had this problem. (Offlist replies please)
PS. Feel free to contact me offlist if you want a full discription of the workaround for installing the printer driver without updating Internet Exploder. It seems the only thing it actually needed an upgraded IE for was printing the test page!

When sending an e-mail, you have the option of marking it as low, normal or high priority (top right corner of the screen in EPOC e-mail). I have marked this one as high priority and am CCing it to you, so the copy you receive outside the digest should have the red exclamation mark.
PS. Has anyone ever received an e-mail marked as LOW priority? It's difficult to see the difference between the icon for normal and low priority on my Revo, but it looks like the envelope is grey instead of white.

I think you'll only find RAW in high end cameras. My Fuji S5000 is the first camera I have owned that has the RAW option. I would be surprised if RAW became a common feature of consumer level cameras. I seem to remember my old Nikon could save images as .TIF though.

This is probably more a result of the cheap audio components in the Palm than anything to do with the MP3 format. I have lots of classical music on my Creative™ DAP MP3 player. As almost all of it is music where I have the original CD, I have had full control of the ripping process, and in the few cases where I can hear a difference between the original CD in my CD player and the MP3, it's the MP3 which sounds better. My MP3 player also sounds better than the Laptop playing back the same MP3 file, again through the same amplifier and speakers. This in my opinion is another argument for a proper MP3 player like the iPod or Creative models instead of a device like a phone or PDA with MP3 capability.

Subject: Find/ Replace 'Enter'
Hi,
does anybody know how to replace (in Word/ Editor e.g) a sign with a line break i.e. 'Enter'?
I have a couple of ebooks which are sometimes formatted in a way, that each line ends with a linebreak - not very nice to look at with certain viewers or zoom-levels. I therefore replace them with a space but of course I don't want that with the 'real' paragraphs.
So double linebreaks are at first replaced wthe rest with 'space' and then I want to replace with a linebreak but this is read as 'OK' by the system. At the moment I use a very clumsy macro:
SendKey:("Ctrl+f") rem find
SendKey:("Fn+
SendKey:("Enter") rem confirmSendKey:("Enter") rem insert linebreak
and that is copied a couple of times. (Very clumsy!)
How can I say: repeat till the end of text ?
This would still be rather slow. Is there a way to get the original replace procedure, just that confirmation is done with 'Ctl+Enter' as in Data and not with a simple 'Enter'
Cheers,
Astrid

The red exclamation mark indicates that it is an e-mail with high priority. You can set the priority of your own e-mails as well, by tapping on it in the upper right corner. There is also a difference between the icons of "low" and "normal" priority.
Please, use the "High" priority with caution. In a lot of mail readers (Outlook Express for example) such an e-mail comes up in red letters and this is usually not appreciated by most readers.
Answer to : David Lir
The battery of the Netbook Pro should operate at a nominal voltage of 10.7 V, which will make the Netbook think that it is almost empty. Wouldn't this be a limitation on the hours of use you get from the N-Pro's battery ? The moment it becomes lower than 10.7 V... the Netbook will stop working.
I guess you'll need another charger as well ?

Those are "high priority" messages.
I have a similar question: does anyone know what emails with a yellow envelope icon instead of the usual white envelope mean? I never noticed this difference in my Revo, but it's clear in the netBook. I thought this indicated emails not directly addressed to me (mailing lists or digests) but it's not consistent.
