At the moment these apps are open on my 5mx:
Agenda
Contacts
eGuitar
Logit
Tomeraider
Calculator
Data (2 Databases)
Clock
Phoneman
Scribble
Notepad
Citymaps
Note
Big Collins
I also was tempted to buy the new PEG-UX50 from Sony, but as long as there is not REAL multitasking in PalmOS, I will resist and stick to my good old reliable 5MX...

While on the subject of Psion/MacOS X compatibility, can anyone tell me how to get .vcf files from the Psion into Address Book in the order I want? Does moving the view position of data in the Psion programme change the order in the exported .vcf file?
Another question: are there Java programmes for NetPad/Book that are of any interest to non-power users of the Psion?

<<I doubt that I'd need 500 at any one time. But that leads me to ask how one does load files from Windows to either the Dana or the MBook?>>
With the MBook (5mx, Revo, etc.) The transfer is done most easily with PsiWin (IMO). The conversion process is very very fast for one file. Conversion is necessary from Psion to Windows - no conversion per se Windows to Psion - almost the same time (very fast).
With the Dana you hot sync (like any Palm unit) and the files in the folder on the Windows machine are readable without conversion. This takes time (1 - 3 minutes).
If you use the resident AlphaWord, you can transfer a single file at a time and (AIR) it is very fast. I recommend using AlphaWord rather than loading up WordSmith until you are familiar with AlphaWord. it's designed for using 8 files simultaneously and sending single files to the desktop (fast). It also has an excellent spell check. With WordSmith you have to hotsync the computer to transfer files (no sending of a single file) and the spell check is poor.
The one very large plus of WordSmith is its file management interface.
As for overrunning the processor - I had that problem at first, now it happens only when multi-tasking and usually in Snapper Mail when the file gets large.
This is an irritant and one more sign of the really inadequate processor (like the old Zaurus units which were otherwise excellent machines.)
As far as .rtf vs .doc, I use .doc exclusively so someone else will have to address that issue.
Have I muddied the water enough? <vbs>

Subject: Cisco Aironet Card
Hi All
Has anyone on the list got a Cisco Aironet Card that they want to sell? I believe that the model that I need is the 342 or a 350, but 3500,4800 or 340 would do. I would prefer a 342 from Sita's stock as the price will be more sensible that what I paid for my 350 when they first came out onto the market. I would need it posting to Shetland by Recorded Delivery. Just let me know a price please.
Thanks

What do you mean by this?
As for VReader, remember it's written in OPL, and so is relatively slow at screen-painting operations.
(From experience in writing 'Life', it's possible to write OPL code which deals with the screen orders of magnitude slower than need
be, just by not optimising the code. Stuff one wuld expect to be adequately fast turns out not to be, on experiment.

Here's what I had to do (before I heard about the reg cleaner)after I had uninstalled PsiWin and it wouldn't reinstall:
1. Start/Run/regedit.
2. Select "My Computer".
3. File/Export - this'll put a copy of the registry on your desktop in case you screw up.
4. Edit/Find - enter psiwin in the box and click "Find next" button. 5. Click Delete, then OK.
6. Click F3 (this will find the next psiwin), click Delete, click OK. 7. Repeat step 6 about a zillion times until you get a message that it's been through the entire registry.
8. Reinstall PsiWin.
9. If everything works, you can then dump the registry icon on your desktop.
I was then able to reinstall PsiWin with no problem.

Hello, I've been away from the list for about 10 months. I recently bought a laptop that had a Palm-based PDA with it. This has rekindled my interest in PDAs and particular with comparing the two very different platforms.
Also, the laptop uses Windows XP - are there any known problems with using PsiWIN 2.3.3 (Build 150) with XP?

Subject: MBook Year Codes / MBook OS.IMG / 31% of 6310i
Hi All
Keith Giles asked about MBook year codes. It looks like mine is a week older - 850 - or week 50 of 2000. My new netBook is 044 - week 44 of 2002. My old netBook has been kidnapped by my girlfriend who has discovered its gaming potential.
Installing OS.IMG on the MBook. It took me three CF cards to find one from which the MBook would accept the OS.IMG file. The MBooks don't give you much idea as to whether this file is loading or not after a hard reset, mine due to a memory upgrade.

When referring to a Nokia 6310i problem.
Do you know if a cure was suggested to this problem? Where did you see it documented?

Subject: 2.2GB Microdrives / netBook ID
I noticed recently that Scan (www.scan.co.uk) are now selling a 2.2 GB Magicstor Compact Flash Type II Microdrive. Power requirements seem within the capabilities of Psions - 275mA write + 18mA read. Although since I managed to lose all my data can't swear that I've got that right.
These are manufactured by www.jazztechnology.biz and retail for $189.99 - much more affordable than a comparably sized CF card. And they appear to be faster than the Hitachi 1GB as well, 4200rpm as opposed to 3600rpm.
Hitachi also now have 4GB Microdrives. There was an earlier discussion on maximum addressable memory on a Psion and for a FAT 16 system like the Psion that equals 2GB. It would need a FAT 32 system to utilise capacities of 4GB. However I have a note that Marek Oswiecimski successfully partitioned a 256MB CF using a Windows application Ranish Partition Manager. So in theory that means that Psions would support the 4GB microdrives.
I'm not about to flash out on the very expensive 4GB microdrives, but was wondering if anyone had any further thoughts on whether the partition solution would work on cards of this size. And can you partition a microdrive anyway? I am thinking of acquiring the 2.2 GB microdrive as a master repository, but am ignorant of the issues involved.
If I could transfer all my software CDs onto a card my Psion can read would be one less reason to have to use a PC anyway
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My netBook was secondhand so no box and there's no sticker inside the CF tray either. So looks like I'll never know!

Subject: Creating an MP3 collection database from MusicMatch
Hi.
I have a large collection of MP3 music (30 gigs). I would like to have a database of my music on the Psion. If possible, I'd prefer a relational database with albums linked to artists etc. It is possible to export a listing from MusicMatch on my Toshiba to IIRC a tab separated file. Any ideas how to get this onto the Psion and what software to use on the Psion end? I know I can import TSV in Data, but that's probably a little too limited for my use. I have Powerbase somewhere in a dusty corner, but found the learning curve too steep when it first came out.

Subject: Re: JPL, MacOS 10.3.1, Keyspan USB-Serial adaptor; PsiMac
Good news for Mac owners, for once. I took the advice someone recently gave to check out the Java Psion Link. Installed on an eMac G3 running MacOS 10.3.1, with a Keyspan USA-19QW USB-serial converter, it is a boon to we of the never-never - i.e., the neglected crew who have been dependent on the wretched MacConnect program. The Keyspan converter however seems to require updated software available from www.keyspan.com; and the Psion (5mx, MC218 and S7 in my case) needs Psion JVM. File transfers (including drag&drop from Mac to Psion) are excellent so far; Psion Backup has worked for Drive C, but stops with "too many errors" (or some such message) on Drive D. JPL could do with more in the way of instructions for use, but it can be worked out nevertheless. Many thanks to the program's author, and to the psioneer who recommended it recently.
Back to the future: Can anyone put me onto a copy of PsiMac? I've revived my S3a but, following a house move, cannot find my old copy of PsiMac to use with my old PowerBook 150 (I have the various upgrades, which are a fat lot of use without the original!). It might be interesting to try installing it also on the eMac in Classic mode.
MacConnect is supposed to do the job for the 3a, but it consistently tells me that "no Psion can be found". Thanks in advance for any help.

Chris,
I dismantled a friends Series 7 with the same problem and all I ended up doing was loosening a metal plate a tiny bit that covered the screen cable to resolve the problem! Pressing on the lable, I feared could eventually damage the connection or acellerate screen cable damage. Ensure a full back up and disconnect all power. The job took me about 15 minutes!

Hi Daniele,
when Alan Morris wrote:
>> I've used Opera to display the occasional e-mail that arrived in Email as html text code - ie not as an attachment, but text with visible html code mixed in and also received attachments that were html or pictures. <<
you wondered how that was done.
Well, I don't know how Alan did it (manually or using a macro) but the easiest way is to use 'View HTML mail' a macro by Niel Markwick which copies the text to a temporary .html file which is then loaded to the browser of your choice and displayed there. You can set the macro to delete the temp file afterwards. I found it on Pascal Nicolas' site on epocboulevard (additional macros). So you'll know that you will need a macrostarter like Macro5.
I have slightly modified the Macro.
I wanted to use it for attachments and other documents as well so deleteted the first IF to ENDIF passage.
Finding the body text in a mail was badly done so used Rolf Vonau's method and substituted the following SENDKEYCODE section with:
SendKey:("Ctrl+f")
SendKey:("Esc")

Subject: Installing large files via Windows XP PC
I'm now using an XP machine and I've just installed PsiWIN on it. I'm connecting the Psion serial cable via a USB adaptor (the laptop doesn't have any serial ports) :-(
Twice I've tried to install WinEPOC onto my 5mx and after a few minutes, to my horror it twice caused the laptop to reboot!
Is this a known problem with XP/PsiWIN, or indeed with large .SIS installations? WinEPOC is a 700kb file - other smaller files have installed without problem...
Also, is it possible to use the IR port on my laptop to do installations?
Thanx,
/.ndy
