Subject: Digest News Re: Thoughts
Hello All,
In the past few digests, there has been much heated discussion on this topic. And some posts are beginning to get personal. Please would everyone remember one of the few guidelines this digest has:
"The contents of this digest are not censored. However, please respect each others opinions, refrain from discrimination and racism and be polite. We do keep the right not to publish messages and/or delete subscribers from the digest in extreme cases."
The topic on "Thoughts" has been covered enough now, so let's please move on and refrain from posting any more messages on this subject.
Thank you all for your kind attention.
Best regards,

Subject: Thought for the Day - Hooray!
Hi Folks,
I'm not sure why Antony wants this (voluntary) digest censored but I don't.
If the Digest management polls us and we democratically decide to let them censor posts (but I doubt the digest management want this) then I, for one, will seriously reconsider my membership. Though I'll disagree, I won't object to any such censorship if it is decided democratically.
But I will object to any other censoring of posts and I will leave the Digest under such circumstances - and I doubt I'll be the only one. I will also write in defence of the current status quo vis-à-vis censorship. I don't want anyone deciding what *_I_* should be allowed to read. I don't consider deleting automatically added AV messages censorship but I would far rather wade through them than have one deliberate word censored, especially if I disagree with it.
And "Thought for the Day", inter alia, is not required to be relevant.
Most people think it's supposed to be an attempt at *fun*!
Happy days,
Phil.

Subject: Psion emulator questions/replacements for WinXP apps?
I have the Psion emulator ("Large VGA") installed on my WinXP notebook, and would appreciate it if someone could help me with the following questions:
1. How do I get the icons to launch the right apps?
"Word" launches "Mail"
"Sheet" launches "Web"
"Contacts" launches "Word"
"Agenda" launches "Sheet"
"Time" launches "Contacts"
"Calc" launches "Agenda"
"Jotter" launches "Time"
2. A number of third party programs can't launch because "C:system\opx\DATE.OPX" does not exist. Can I download this from somewhere?
3. Is there a FAQ available for using the Emulator, how to sync with the Psion using EpocSync, how to cut&paste data between the Emulator and WinXP etc? Agenda seems to run very well under WinXP, and I would like to also use as many other Psion apps on the notebook as possible, since I prefer them to the default apps.
4. Is it possible to use Mail and Web in the Emulator to connect with the Internet via the notebook's internal modem? I hate Outlook with a passion, and would really prefer to use Mail if possible.
Other than that, is there a good freeware WinXP email client which can replace Outlook, or full-featured freeware/share replacements for Word and Internet Explorer? In particular, I'm looking for an email client that will let me look at all the mails waiting on the server (a la EPOC), so I can decide what to delete before I start downloading anything.
Thanks,
Peter

Subject: Is this the dreaded cable problem?
Can I have some advise please?
Working very efficiently last night, this morning my trusty Ps 5 seemed totake poorly!
Upon start up, I thought there was no power at all, but then I tried thecontrast control,
and ended up with a screen view with very dark lines running vertically, rather like tyre marks might look.
I can only just read what's behind the darkness, and need the contrast onhigh dark to see anything.
Fortunately I had already invested in a new 5mx back in 2002, and it hadnever been used until tonight.
I would like to solve this problem with my 5 as it's been a great servant. So if anyone can give me some advise, as to the reason for the suddenproblem, and ideas on solving it,
it would be gratefully rec'd.
Thanks, Mark

I had in the past tried to e-mail Pascal, but without any sucesss. Now if Macro5 could be made screen size aware, then it would work better on my Revo +.

Hi group!
Two off topic (non EPOC) mails:
Re: Thoughts of the day
As long as they are not longer than two or three lines and not always the same at the bottom of every mail, it is OK in my opinion.
Under theese circumstances I just ignore the political not so correct ones and am amused about the others.
Re: electric current flowing through the body
Long post, if bored, just search for my name to jump to the end:
Armin
I'm an electric engeneer as well as anaesthesiologist. (Some collect stamps, I professions.;-))
I got my first jolt in the age of three after inserting two metal pins into a 220 V wall socket. I'll never forget this. ;-)
(By the way, is it possible to open the live opening of a british wall socket by pushing a small pin into the opening for the third pin?)
The problem with the currents in the body is twofold. Electric current can damage the body by the energy that is transformed in the different organs touched by the current and by disturbing the rhythmic discharges of the heart cells. For the latter you would need not more then some mA in the wrong moment. (See end of my post.)
For the former the energy of the current is divided to the different organs. Even the current itself is divided into several paths through the body.
How much Energy is transformed in each cubiccentimeter of tissue can not be easy predicted. 1 Joule = 1 W * sec = 1 V * A * sec. It depends not only on the current, but on the voltage and the time as well.
The voltage in a part of tissue depends on its conductivity. The higher the conductivity, the lower the voltage, but all voltages along the path of the current add up to the voltage the whole body is objected.
The current in the individual tissue depends on the anatomy. In big organs with good conductivity like the liver it can dissipate to a bigger cross section. In e.g. small bones and tendons it can concentrate in small cross sections.
Everything depends on how much current flows between entrance and exit of the current and how much voltage is between theese two points.
To calculate these two variables you have to assume the body as a resistor in a closed circuit and have to consider the voltage of the power source and very important the inner resistance of the power source as well as other resistances in serial connection between power source and body. This is the main reason, why the jolt from a wall socket is much more dangerous than the jolt of an electric fence of 5000 V. Very important is the resistance of the skin. Dry skin has a higher resistance than wet skin and therefore adds up more to the total resistance resulting in a lower current.
If you close the circuit and the current flows, it is the same in all resistors. It is proportional to the voltage of the power source and reverse proportional to the sum of all resistances.
The voltage is divided between the resistors in the same relationship than the resistances.
Examples:
Wall socket: the inner resistance of the "wall socket" (the power station) is near zero and much smaller than the resistance of the body. Most of the voltage will connect to the body. The summed resistances are not high, so a dangerous current can result.
Fence: the inner resistance of the generator is very high. If you close the circuit with your body to the earth, the summed resistances are very high, resulting in a very low current and most of the 5000V are on the inner resistance of the generator so that the effective voltage over the body is low. In fact, because of the high voltage and high inner resistance of the generator the current depends just on the generator itself and not on the length of the fence or resistance of the object. (You don't want to kill your horses just because it's a rainy day and their fur is wet.)
To feel an 50 Hz AC current flowing from hand to hand or hand to foot it has to be greater than 0,5 mA. To be harmless it has to be lesser than 10 mA. Currents higher than 40 mA for 10 sec to 1000 mA for 10 ms can trigger fibrillation of the heart.
DC is less dangerous. In the region of small currents the threefold DC equals the effect of AC. (Heartfibrillation is not possible.)

To all
Some time ago there was a discussion about the Oxford English dictionary. In TR format it was said to be over 8 MB (with no copy function). A MobiPocket version was also mentioned.
I would like to add that it is available in K2 format as well. It is fast, you can copy from it and it takes up only 3,9 MB. For the reader and files including the Oxford dictionary check:

Thank you for all the responses.
Firstly, I do not consider myself a troll because I complained about something going on in the digest that I do not believe should be tolerated, whether humorous or not.
Secondly, I was not criticising an individual, although I did use Owen Morgan as an example as he seems to post the majority of them
Thirdly, I reserve my right to complain as others do, whether I am considered a troll for doing so, or not
I will not respond further on this subject, as requested, but have not changed my opinion on this matter.

There has been some talk of dictionaries in the Digest lately. I will be travelling to Russia next month and will need some kind of phrase book as my Russian does extend beyond "da" and "vodka". Is there any available for the Psion? I googled around, but can only find Palm/PPC solutions.

The dictionary can be found in System/Apps/Spell/User.dic and is size 8446. I have tried saving to backup D deleting and recopying - to no avail. HELP!!!!!!!

Subject: Revo battery
All my Revos have had problems with the battery.
My most recent Revo has had the batteries and memory updated in Germany. When I saw that it was playing up, I let the battery run down to what I assumed was less than the stated zero and then after a few days plugged it into the mains. It took a long time to wake up so I gave it a double prod in the back side - and it came on with a battery reading of 84%
This is clearly wrong.
Another double prod and the battery is down to 68 %
What is going on, why and how can I get my Revo to behave?

Subject: Potter, Psion, Linux, things are going to change,
Answer to: Timothy
Re.: Potter, Psion, Linux - Psion has been stripped down and does not have the development, R&D and other divisions anymore to develop new products. They would further need a huge investment in marketing, advertising and promotion to make any impact with new machines in the USA market where they failed last time and where Palm reigns as king. It is very unlikely that they will try again, but we can always be hopeful .....
From the same article, "Wil dispensing with the need to pay royalties to Symbian save enough money to make Psion's new generation of robust mobile devices competitive?" A sub-notebook is the like of the netBook ? Certainly a "miniature keyboard" is not a replacement of the 5MX ? Also it appears that EPOC will not return as it is now owned by Symbian and not Psion anymore.
Answer to: Chris Handley
Re. things are going to change - Thanks for a thoughtful message. The problem with making changes is that you will please one person and displease someone else who prefered "the way it was before". Therefore we think it is best to leave all as is and as has been for the last 300 to 400 digests. "If it aint broke, aint fix it".

RE
I remember Dic as a light multilingual interface; so light that I did not keep it %-]
Otfried C. (one "t" only) pages are not to be found on the HK university site anymore, but (much nearer to you) in The Netherlands at :
http://www.win.tue.nl/~ocheong/
with (sorry no e-mail) Phone and Fax #.
Searching "psion otfried dic" on www.search.com/ (I like this one even more than google) showed this (clue?) : http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Haven/6920/psiarchiv08_98.htm
where one can read a little more about Dic interface, files, and install :
Happy Dic tracking...
