Andy,

I never used a printer with TimeLog, but I think a warning for this sw  is in place here. I used it some two three years ago but found that it was not reliable and obviously had some bugs. If you use it, be sure to make frequent backups of your TimeLog data files as they can suddenly disappear when you are adding or appending entries or when using filters. I learned this the hard way. I tried to contact the author, but he had already then stopped supporting the sw and I choose to abandon it.

Hello Peter,

Subject: Psion emulator questions

Peter Rand wrote:

It sounds like you have simply copied your entire System folder from your real Psion onto the Emulator...  THIS IS A REALLY BAD IDEA!

I urge you to delete the System folder and start from scratch, manually configuring it like your existing Psion, installing WINS versions of the relevant applications & OPXes, etc.

You are free to share these (data) files:

System\Data\Contacts.cdb

System\Data\Clpboard*

System\Data\Mru.dat

System\OPL\*

System\Mail\*   (be careful here!)

If you're feeling adverturous, you can also share the System\Apps\*\*.ini files, EXCEPT for System\Apps\Shell\SHELL.ini .

If you really wish to tempt fate (by not installing from scratch) then I *think* you can get rid of the problem you mention by deleting the C:\System\Apps\Shell\SHELL.ini file.  Beware that you will loose some other settings too.

> 2. A number of third party programs can't launch because

> "C:system\opx\DATE.OPX" does not exist. Can I download this

> from somewhere?

You do not need to, because it is already installed on the Emulator's Z drive.  Please check that you have not accidentally installed any OPXs intended for a "real Psion", as this might be the cause of the error message.

In fact, someone recommended making all OPXs Read-Only once you have (correctly) installed WINS versions, so that they are not accidentally overritten by an SIS installer.

Also, make sure you are using the Rel(ease) rather than Deb(ug) version of the Z drive files, because that might cause a few wierd problems too.

> 3. Is there a FAQ available for using the Emulator,

I once found a web page with someone's great hints on using the Emulator, but you'll have to Google it yourself.

I also posted some pointers on the Psion section of Pda Street.

> how to sync with the Psion using EpocSync,

You can't, unless you somehow manage to get the Emulator to correctly use the IR port of your laptop.  Although this ought to be possible using some black magic (and a copy of IrCOMM2k :) I have never managed it - Windows always added extra stuff to what the Emulator tried to send or recieve, thus confusing the real Psion.

It SHOULD be possible to EpocSync over a real serial cable, but you might find messing with cables tedious :(

Idea: An IR-port that attaches to a serial port on your laptop might work perfectly.  This trick here is to have an IR port that Windows thinks is a serial port, so that Windows does not try to add extra stuff to what is sent or recieved.

However, I think you will probably give-up in the end.  If this happens, then you might like to consider a simpler alternative - "synchronise" using a CompactFlash.

My method (which is not real synchronisation) involves backing-up my Psion to a CF, then restoring Documents (and a few special System files) to the Emulator drive, or vice versa.  The down side of this is that YOU CANNOT USE THE EMULATOR AND PSION AT THE SAME TIME.

Someone could slightly modify EpocSync to do (true) bi-directional syncing using a CF card, but please don't look at me :-)

> how to cut&paste data between the Emulator and WinXP etc?

You can't, sorry.  I have been toying with the idea of fixing this myself, but I don't know when I will have the time (maybe this year if you are lucky!).

> I would like to also use as many other Psion apps on the

> notebook as possible, since I prefer them to the default apps.

Hey, someone else with good taste (like me;-)

While the built-in apps work great, and all OPL apps too (which are typically Shareware & Freeware programs), you will unfortunately NOT be able to run most C++ apps (which are usually Commercial programs).

There are a few exceptions; some OPL programs need OPXes for which WINS versions are not available, and the occasional shareware app is C++ (which needs to be a special WINS version to work).

You can get a lot of WINS OPXes from Symbian's site.  There are a FEW C++ apps which the author has releases as a WINS version, e.g. PdfPrinter (essential!), EPlayM (not really useful), PhoneMan Pro, Crypto, and probably a few others I forgot (look at my Pda Street posts).

> 4. Is it possible to use Mail and Web in the Emulator to

> connect with the Internet via the notebook's internal modem?

Yes, it is very possible - in fact, I am using Email right now!  The trick is to tell Windows to put your Modem on COM1 or COM2 (which translates to Serial port 0 or 1 on the Emulator).  I use COM2, as I tried to put IR on COM1 (which I believe is where the Emulator expects the IR port to be).

It may even be possible to get (only) Email to use Window's TCP/IP stack, by MISusing SmptAuth - but thats serious hacking which I have yet to get working myself.

Someone did NOT call you a troll because you complained - everyone (inc you!) has the right to do that.  Rather, they called you a troll because of the WAY in which you presented your complaints.

Now personally, I'm not sure it is wise to use the word "troll" to describe anyone (except the absolute lowest internet scum who exist only to start flame wars), because that is a form of stereotyping which itself can worsen the situation.

Hopefully you (and others) will take greater care in how they criticise someone else next time.

Hello,

I am considering purchasing another CF card for my Netbook and have decided to get one with the largest capacity I can(for storing images, data, backing up and mp3s).

I am wondering, what is the largest capacity the CF slot can hold (D drive) and is this the same for a CF card in the PC Card slot (E drive)?

Also, are there any other factors I should be aware of such as manufacturer, access speed and card type?

Many thanks in advance.

Re. Power-off mBook - Last night I left the office with a fully charged mBook, closed. I opened it some 4 hours later to find the battery on 11.5 v and Chadisk showing 3.9 hours of "use". It appears that there are circumstances that the mBook either does not switch off upon closing it or switches on for one reason or another. It never happened with my S7 and I have nothing different from the S7. Any ideas or likewise experiences ?

Hi.

Can someone remember what date the original S5 arrived on the market?

I seem to remember that the S5 had been on the market for around six months when I bought mine in January and joined the UPS5 digest.  but can't I remember which year it was. I do remember Itamar joining a couple of months later. Is there anyone else around who's been with us since the origial UPS5 digest all those years ago?

Interestingly, the amount of traffic on the digest has been more or less constant the whole time. It's quite amazing that the digest is still going strong and attracting new members long after production of the EPOC Psions has stopped.

It seems like it. I wonder whether it's a difference in compilation or a real difference in the contents? Anyone have both versions? Does anyone know whether it is possible to unbind a TR file? Then we could both export them as txt or something and at least get a definite number of bytes.

I'm pretty sure that when I upgraded from TR1 to TR2 on the Psion, it converted my files for me the first time I opened them. I can't remember whether I got hold of OED before or after this upgrade though, so I can't say whether it's a file created for TR1 and updated by the TR2 application or one created for TR2. Maybe that's the difference. Maybe files originally created for TR2 are more effecient than those updated from TR1 to TR2?.

Daniele Squarci wrote (> ):

Maybe not abridged, but it seems to be slightly truncated both ends. As Martin said, the TR version or versions start at 'cause and end with øre. If I counted correctly, I have 452 entries before 4to, mostly suffixes preceded by "-". The K2 version has either skipped them or put them in their alphabetical place in the dictionary without the "-".

> No mention if you can make your own K2 files.

I'd be grateful if someone could research this further and also whether it's possible to unbind a TR file. Apart from the obvious advantage of file size, I really miss not being able to copy and paste from TR. It was a great way of winning arguments!

Also it appears that EPOC will not return as it is now owned by Symbian and not Psion anymore.<<

indeed Psion has now completely divested itself from both Symbos 16 as well as Symbos 32 and is now a *CE-only shop

( Note : Symbos 16 = S3MX and last release of Workabout industrial handheld , Symbos 32 = S5MX/Ericsson MC 218/S7/Revo and Netbook Classic as well as smartphones such as Nokia Series 60, 80, and 90 )

This is a fiercely competitive market where they have to compete against players such as Symbol , Intermec , Itronix  as well as a number of local upstarts

And the future of Symbian now that Nokia is in the driver's seat ?

My estimated guess is that  Nokia is in a position to completely close off the native ( C++/OPL ) API's leaving Java as the only option for third-party applications

This is now already happening with their 3G offerings such as the  6650 and the 7600

Smartphones with open Symbian will remain available for years to come but eventually supplies will dry up and people have to move to other platforms , just as has happened with Psion ( this will - however -take a much longer time than with Psion , as the numbers will be much larger, unless MicroSoft successfully exerts its intellectual property rights on key parts of the OS )

>>From the same article, "Will dispensing with the need to pay royalties to Symbian save enough money to make Psion's new generation of robust mobile devices competitive?" <<

Unlikely , they have to work hard to bring *CE on par with Symbian 16/32 as used in the "old" Risc-based models and they have to work against an ( entrenched ) competition

This could easily eat up any cost savings

>> A sub-notebook is the like of the netBook ?  Certainly a "miniature keyboard" is not a replacement of the

5MX ?<<

The market niche for a pocketable keyboarded machine has now been taken up by Sony with the PEG-UX and Sharp with the SL-B and SL-C models , not to mention the RIM Blackberry

Psion could position itself in the generic business as well as the "prosumer"  markets but again competition will be fierce as they have no differentiator against their competitors

A bigger threat to the PDA/smartphone will be the ultrapersonal computer , a PDA or ( large i.e brick-style ) smartphone-sized PC ( PC as in Apple Mac or IBM -compatible )  ,these will run standard PC operating systems and applications and use standard PC peripherals

The initial cost may be greater , the TCO will be substantially less ( operating system and applications are the same )

Development has reached the point that mass production can begin

It's not just an email client, it is more of an internet suite, including a browser, newsgroup reader, IRC client and HTML editor.

I think MS IE was based on it when first written, so it can't be that bad. Not that I'm endorsing IE, just stating there may be closer compatibility with IE than other browsers such as Opera.

Subject: Psion's future?

Mobile communications have had 1 main problem, the interface. People want a device that fits in the pocket, but can then be used as a computer. So far, technology has either been a PDA with a keyboard that some consider too bulky or a PDA with a virtual keyboard that most people feel is impractical to compose anything of substance on them. Another technology of text recognition is either too slow or too unreliable. The main limitation with a small device, however, is the screen size. Even the trusty S3/5/MX/Revo and the others have smaller screens than most people are happy with.

There is a solution with the keyboards by having a soft keyboard that is foldable and now there is technology being developed to create 'floppy screens'. I think it was Philips that announced this technology is now going into mass production last week . At the moment, they can only create black and white models, but say they can be rolled up to the thickness of a pen as it is a thin plastic sheet. If this is the case, potentially there could be phones with screens that can be pulled out like a projector screen and similarly that same could be done with a keyboard.

When these happen, I believe the mobile telephony PDA will take off and eventually supercede the Laptop or at least 'merge with laptop technology'

Dear Itamar,

my CS software 4.0.2. shows these two entries: (221) 2406202             1200-33600 baud (221) 924350 ISDN       64k_ISDN

They are listed under Cologne, not Köln. You could also try by searching for the prefix 221.

All phone numbers in the CS directory have so far shown to be correct...

Owen is right (in #450) that I am not great touch typist. But politics is the art of the possible. Facts of life are that I have to switch all the time between different Swedish and non-Scandinavian layouts. Key mapper may be the best, but it has disappeared from the radar screen. But if someone would be so kind to send it, it would be appreciated. If so as zip-file; my operator has blocked exe-files.

Please forgive another ignorant question. My old MC 218 has IR to some older Ericsson phones (but not newer ones with NSCSD or whatever it's called  if I am correctly informed), and settings for some other modems. The netBook, that I haven't got yet, has IR and a PC-cardslot. Now, IR is OK if you are comfortably seated at a table, but not so great in a taxi, or an underground train (or the stairway in a hospital, which was not fun). My question is whether there is some other way to connect it to a mobile phone (apart from the latest version that has bluetooth), preferably a modern one. The connector cable to the PC is some kind of serial cable, after all. Could that be used somehow? Any other way? And how to connect it to modern mobile phones? And how about the netBook?

Have a nice week-end

The old one for Düsseldorf (also try a 2 at the end):
