Subject: MC218 behaves like a 5mx!

Dear Psioneers

My 5mx had its third screen cable failure in just over 4 years yesterday. This came about 3 weeks after the touch screen had failed and I was waiting for it to happen.

I was able to make a complete backup after the failure. By holding the screen slightly open, the screen still worked and I was able to switch the cable link on and start the backup. I backed up to a new directory to force a full back up of the Internal drive

Luckily I had a brand new MC218 which has been waiting for 2 years in a cupboard at home for the 5mx to fail. I did a full restore from the full backup and the MC218 is working well. (I am writing from this machine). My main concern was to ensure that I would be able to send retrieve my emails. Just before the screen failure I had written 9 emails which were in the outbox. By doing the full back up the emails were restored perfectly and I was able to send the 9 in the queue without any problems.

My question is this: because I did a full restore from the 5mx backup my MC218 now behaves like a 5mx. The applications activated by the touch screen are those of the 5mx and not the MC218, although all the MC218 applications which the 5mx does not have (My phone for instance) are accessible from the Z drive. I want to know whether I will have any problems using the MC218 as if it were a 5mx? Should I do a hard reset and rather re-install all the applications?

All help greatly appreciated

Subject: netBook Security

I need some help please.

I am using a netBook and am having difficulty doing operations that require security. I am able to access my bank and get all the balances but as soon as I

want to do a transaction (like paying a creditor) it freezes.

Likewise I am able to assess my stockbrokers website and get all the normal information but as soon as I want to go to my account it will not allow me to do

it.

I have Opera 5.1  installed and have tried under connections in the connection

preferences, Opera, Mozilla and Microsoft. In the security preferences I have

tried them all.

I love my netBook but I find these restrictions very constricting so much so that it may force me to look at an alternative.

Any suggestions will be welcome.

Best Regards,

Jeanny

Re.: Psion emulator - You wrote "Psion never really intended the machines as standalone computers". I don't think that is true. The Psion's are certainly machines that can be used as "standalone", whenever I travel it is my only computer and does all it needs to do. Sure, some "beauty" effects like fonts and frills are missing, but for the working businessman that is not important (at least not for me). AFAIR you use it mostly as "standalone" as well ?

Answer to: Neil Thompson

Re. Html & digest - The digest is sent in plain text format from Psions only, there is no way it could arrive in HTML format.

Re. trogrammars  - Is that a combination of "troll" and "programmer" ... ?  <BG>

Answer to: Greg Crayford

Re. Agendas/Web on 5MX - A much better way to "open" a new agenda file each year is to clean/tidy the old one and delete all entries up to the 1st of January of the new year and save these into a new file. This way all your settings, to-do's and anniversaries stay in the "new" (= old) file and the old data of the last year are saved in the new file.      Did you try to delete the Web.ini file (usually in the Documents folder) ?  If that does not help, uninstall the program, delete the Web.ini and try to install it again.

Answer to: Trygve Henriksen

Re. Power-off - Thanks for the idea of an alarm, but I use AlarmPlus to stop alarms from finishing my battery charge and the mBook should switch off again after an alarm (set to 3 minutes in Control Panel).  Also, no one reacted to my problem that sometimes it takes 3 times to switch off my mBook, the first two times it switches off and immediately on again. No one has got this problem ? (Finally I can make a claim to be unique .... <G>).

I just had a thought. Most of you are probably aware of metal with a memory, used amongst other things for spectacle frames that can be bent in all directions and and will return to their normal shape. This might be useful for the frame for a floppy screen.

Hmm It might not work at all. Touch sensitivity may need a hard back for something to press against.

>i suppose that depends on your definition of poor. It's stable, it's easy to configure and easy and intuitive to use and it doesn't allow nasty stuff to exploit the machine. In that way it's quite good. It is rather poorly featured compared to most desktop based e-mail applications, but then unlike many (most?) of us on this digest, Psion never really intended the machines as standalone computers. That's a pity because they were so near to acheiving it. With the addition of Rolf's REM and Sergio's SaveMail, the EPOC e-mail application actually becomes one of the most versatile around and thankfully, it doesn't send RTF or HTML e-mails.

<

What I meant by poor is the lack of features you would expect such as signatures and possibly HTML email. After all, you get a browser, why not have a feature to launch the browser and open a temporary .htm doc at least?

I also find the connectivity settings annoying. Firstly, I use my Netbook at home, at work and when mobile. At work I connect via LAN/WAN, home via LAN/ADSL and mobile via IR mobile. All 3 have different SMTP servers, but all connect to the same mailbox (POP3). For this, I have to connect to the Internet and the connect to 1 of 3 duplicate accounts with different SMTP details. It would have been far better if it was an option to determine SMTP account details from or based on the internet connection.

If I have 2 or more mail accounts, they all go into the same inbox. It would be nice if there was either a message filtering feature or part of the account credentials included the folder to put them in.

Also, the fact that I first download the subjects, choose the ones I want without reading the body, then move the email I want to keep into the inbox, takes more time during the selection process than it would to just download the lot and disconnect. This is especially annoying if you have alot of and the damn thing disconnects from your mailbox before you've had a chance to close it, because you were manually filtering, whereby you have to get all the messages again!

>With the aid of EpocSync, you can actually use the simulator as a spare Psion or even use it as your home machine with a 5(mx) or Revo/Mako as your portable. Personally, I don't bother. I'm quite happy typing on the 5mx or Rako and on a boat, the power consumption of the WindoZe notebook is always a problem so I use it as little as possible.<

I suggested possibly using it to access backed up documents without the need for a document conversion, which pretty much amounts to the same thing.

Re: Operating system: I know they no longer own EPOC, but they never owned CE.NET either, but developed it for use on the Netbook pro. I was just trying to make the point that they could broaden their market rather than jump ship.

To: Trygve Henriksen

I suppose you're right about needing a flat surface. With a floppy screen, they could have a keyboard similar to a Nokia communicator, where the phone opens like a book, but using the space used for the screen area aswell as the floppy screen would not require the space?

I'm afraid you got me stumped. I can't try out the numbers right now, since I'm travelling in Arizona. (There were 2 numbers, but the formatting in my post got screwed up.) All I can say is that so far all the numbers in the CS software have worked, and I was sent the software October 2003. I also know that the old Frankfurt number (which is where I normally live) continued to work in spite of CS switching to a nationwide number. Speaking of which, have you tried that one? (The 019... number). It should be billed as a local call, unless the hotel disallows such Service Numbers. Other than that? Try all the numbers with a 0211-prefix. Or maybe the hotel has a free Wi-Fi installed...? Or call the CS hotline?

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Actually, I think EpocSync should be able to access it quite happily.  The key is that the USB serial adapter has a Windows driver which will make it appear like any other serial port - the only requirement for use with the Emulator is that the port must appeare has COM1 or COM2.

> PhoneMan Pro works on the emulator, IR and all? Thanks,

I haven't actually tested it, but I don't expect it to work...  Just tried - and no joy :(

I was mainly thinking you can at least still view the data that PhoneMan Pro stores.

(This lack of IR working really bugs me - if anyone has any hints on getting IrCOMM2k to work as advertised I would be very pleased!)

> How do I tell Windows to put my modem on COM2? I played

> around with the network settings, but couldn't see how to do

> this.

It is nothing to do with Network settings.  You should go to the Control Panel, System icon, Hardware tab, Device Manager button - and then Properties for the relevant device (such as Modem or IR port).

Hidden in the advanced properties of my modem was an option to change the COM port.  You can only tell it to use a port which is not already used, therefore you need to first move any device using COM1 or COM2.

My Infrared port was a different matter.  I had to manually edit the registry.  My problem is that I was unsure if I should set the real (hardware) IR port to COM1, or whether IrCOMM2k's software port should be set to COM1.  In IrCOMM2k's case, it proved very difficult to change it's automatically allocated port number, and required un- & re-installing IrCOMM2k.

Certainly that is a short term solution - how long is it going to last?

Hmmm, I did that too some years ago (with my existing email address), and it hasn't caused me problems since I stopped advertising my address in public.  Reason?  Spammers probably only want to harvest new (active) addresses, not old ones that people may have abandoned.

BTW, I trust you have NOT been replying to spam, telling them you wish to "opt out" of their junk?  Thats a sure way to keep your spam levels high :(

I'm pretty sure I've done this, and it was no more problem than connecting the Psion via PsiWin. The important things to remember when connecting EpocSync on the EPOC simulator to a Psion are that PsiWin must be closed, and that goes for the Connection Server too (squiggly line) _AND_ the remote link should be switched _OFF_ on the Psion.

WindoZe and thus the EPOC simulator and EpocSync running on it should see the USB RS-232 as a standard COM port (0 or 1) providing you can persuade WindoZe to assign it to COM1 or COM2.

I suspect this will be much more difficult to acheive.

There is a workaround, at least for text. Cut and paste to a text editor, open the file on the other OS and cut and paste to where-ever you want it. A bit tedious, but worth the effort if you need to copy a large amount of text.

Wow! I haven't received _ANY_ spam so far this year! I'm not sure if I received any last year, maybe half a dozen at most. I do receive the occasional virus, but I usually recognize them on the server and delete them without downloading. An unknown "from" address, a subject which doesn't make sense to me and a 50-70kb attachment are the surest signs.

I have an old web based iname.com address which I haven't used for a couple of years. My mother checks it for me a couple of times a month to see if someone interesting has tried to contact me that way and that address still gets some spam, maybe 15-20 messages a month.

> I am going to go against conventional

I wouldn't say this is against conventional wisdom. Iif you haven't posted your e-mail address on the web or Usenet for a long time and it's still attracting this amount of Spam, then that's probably the only option. Did you do a Google or Search.com for your own address? It might prove illuminating!

> My downfall was probably posting my address in the

> newsgroups ages ago.

That is probably to most certain way of fishing for Spam! Placing your e-mail address on the web is almost as effective.

Philip S. Adkins Potter wrote (> ):

> An account my ISP refuses to close (never used in

I try not to write e-mails in anger... If I do, I try to keep it in my draft folder for 24 hours to see if I still want to send it... In many cases I end up not sending it at all, and if I do send it, it'll usually be an edited and milder version. :o)

> is getting swamped by the SWEN virus on other

> peoples machines

So, if you don't use the address and all you receive on it is viruses, why bother checking it at all? Just let it sit there and fill up. Sooner or later it'll start returning "over quota" and maybe you'll then be able to persuade the ISP to delete it when it's taking up a few mb or space on their server.

For some reason the anniversaries didn't show in the new file. I must say that the fact that it's only once a year doesn't help matters as I have to re-teach myself every year how to do it. What I would like to do is to create a 2004 file with all anniversaries from the 2001 year merged in. <

I only have a German OS so the following names might not be correct.

Open an Agenda file that has the 2001 entries. In the first menu is an option 'archive'.

Choose 'copy to new file' in the first field, 'all entries' in the second, 'other' in the third. The first date should be 01.01.2001, the second 31.12.2004. Select file/ folder/ disk of your choice for the new file. Then go to 'type of entries' on the right. Remove all ticks apart from 'anniversaries'. Press Enter, press it again and that should be it.

I suppose your mistake has been to choose 'last year' as period, that would have copied last year's anniversaries - to the last year. So make sure to include the present/ coming year.

And when your at it: create another anniversary towards the end of december; one that explains how to copy anniversaries into another agenda. :-)
