Sorry Itamar, my netBook sometimes (seldom) switches on immediately after switching it off.

And re timed switch off, the longest time, that work for me is 31 seconds. Any longer time keeps it from switching off.

Does anybody have a workaround for this?

Why don't you use the SMTP of your POP3-provider?

I connect to the internet via different providers like you, but I always use the same mailbox setting of my freemail-provider with it's POP3 and SMTP. I completly ignore the different addresses, POP3's and SMTP's of my ISP's.

No, that would probably end with sending your mail with different "From:" - addresses depending on your actual connection.

Example: If you are customer of t-online in Germany, and you send via their SMTP, they will change the "From:" - address of your outgoing mail to y- address.

You know, that you can set up folders to put the mails in (by hand, but you could select them all (Ctrl+A) and Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V them over. (This works even direkt from the remote inbox.)

OK here I agree with you, but sometimes even this is handy, especially when checking via cellphone to pick just a special mail.

You could move over everything first, disconnect and do the filtering afterwards as you recommended before.

But you can still loose connection because of non-7-bit-ASCII-characters in filenames of attachements.

Do I get it right, that it is not possible to dial to Cologne, Germany from Arizona, USA to listen if there is a com?

... right, let's not forget the Macs :-)

BTW: Apple plans something in the way of a pda? The German Mac-mag I (don't) read mentions it without a source or further detail:

"For Steve Jobs, TV is the voice of the Evil One himself, so as long as this

CEO is still around Apple is hardly likely to produce anything like the

Windows Media Center. The developement of a super-mobile 3G phone with

Cingular, the Telecom giant and a partner /of Apple? mn/, is/would be more likely (for the near future)." (MAcUp #4/2004, p 29)

Modals in German are a complicated tool... so is it fact or merely a badly texted antithetical irony infotainment-style?...

Subject: PsiLinux

Firstly a huge thank you to Brian Dushaw for all his hard work, not least is the HOWTO documents that can lead the uninitiated through the Linux jungle.

I am as yet a PsiLinux novice and do not have a working distribution.  My reason for looking into PsiLinux is that my work is migrating to Linux for the end of this year, and with PsiLinux article in the Psion Journal I thought I should give it a try.  What I have achieved is on my 5MX is:

I can boot between EPOC and PsiLinux with ease, restoring a working EPOC system with all my files in 5 minutes.

er... that's it.

What stopped my progress was being able to partition a CF disk with a FAT16 DOS  partition and ext2 Linux partition.  Even if I could partition the CF disk I couldn't copy a distribution to the ext2 partition because my Windows system couldn't see it.  So what I have so far is a file system and 3.5MB of programs.

It seems that I need a Linux desktop platform to support my setting up Linux on my 5MX.

Last weekend I burnt Fedora Core 1 onto CD-ROM.  If I can find 2GB on my PC I will install it and see if I can progress any further.

Why chose my old 5MX instead of my splendiferous netBook?  Well the 5MX is well understood so I thought I should get a successful 5MX implementation up and running before I tried the netBook whose PsiLinux implementation is, as yet, incomplete.

Has anyone successfully used Chris Handley's Fastbackup on an Mbook? Chris's helped me every which way and checked the files that are loaded, but it just doesn't run.  He wondered if it was a problem with the Mbook in general or just my semi-lemon Mbook in particular. TG

Answer to: Anthony Lough

Re.: Broadband woes - I use Eclipse in the UK and have none of these problems. They have a SMTP server to send email and if you so require I believe POP3 services as well. If you don't need the access numbers outside the UK there is no need to stay with Compuserve, quite the opposite actually. I'll send you the missing digests in 2 zip files.

Answer to: Philip Carlisle

Re.: NBook Switch - When leaving the Psion for a period of 3 weeks or more, I would suggest also to close all programs to avoid anything activating the Psion by mistake. Personally I don't believe in closing things in locked draws or cupboards (but for a safe) as these are the first to be forced open by thiefs and besides losing your item(s) you will also have damaged furniture. The police advised us for example in the night, when at home, to lock all downstairs doors so a thief cannot walk from one room to another wihtout making noise and cannot reach the first floor without braking doors, however when away to leave all inner doors unlocked as they will surely break through them.

Re.: Blocked email - That is strange as www.mail.com that I use does not have an personal spam blocker. Something must have been wrong with your email. My mailbox however was full as I forgot to turn off the automatic deleting of forwarded mail <sigh>. I noted your request in my jotter and will send it to you as well. Unfortunately I did not yet get around to doing it .... sorry to all, it will come !

Subject: SunStar Celestial Navigation Beta Test

Hi.

I recently received the source code for the Celestial Navigation software "SunStar" from the author Tham Körner, and have adapted it for the Psion Revo. Would anyone be interested in Beta Testing it? Preferably someone with an interest in and knowledge of celestial navigation. Ownership of both a Psion Revo/Mako and a S5(mx)/MC218 would be helpful so that you can compare results.

To the best of my knowledge, I have not changed anything which could affect the results displayed by the application, but it would be helpful to have some more people checking it out.

Offlist replies please.

PS. Still looking for a way to read the lat and long and time zone settings from an OPL program. I now know it's possible because Solun does it.

Subject: CD backup option

I think someone on the Digest mentioned this before but I can't remember reading a reply to it.  In the latest issue of Computeractive on page 27 there is a recordable CD drive that has a CF slot built in.  It called the DigiMagic DM220 and it's designed to allow digital camera owners to transfer images stored on their CF cards to a CD without recourse to a PC.  The article doesn't say if the user could transfer any file type from a CF to a CD but I can't see any reason why this wouldn't be possible unless for some reason it can only handle image files.  It's not cheap at £199 but does sound ideal for anyone who wants to store very large volumes of data from a Psion e.g. I'd love to be able to backup my entire collection of CF cards and my current 1 Gb Microdrive in D drive (yes, the DM220 does take type 2 CFs) onto CD directly.  It's got a good write up in Computeractive.  So, anyone know for sure if it would work with any file type?

<Well girls and guys, this looks like quite a machine, properly updated to the latest technology and ... still with Symbian OS. Any takers ?>

Thanks for the list of specs - I'm impressed as they take the ageing old dog right up to date.  I notice at 222 grams it's not significantly lighter than my old 9210 brick but it's certainly much better specced than its predecessor!  Now, dare I ask this?  Have Nokia yet again crippled the poor thing with a measly amount of RAM or have they finally seen the error of their ways and allowed the Symbian OS to fly with a decent amount of headroom?  I for one am very interested in this new product but won't even consider one in the future unless that RAM is at least 16Mb this time - I speak from bitter experience with my old 9210; it was a fine machine in many ways but completely spoilt (IMHO) by this very annoying limitation.

Peter I use a .txt file that has it's shortcut in the Taskbar.  Any URL that I get from say this Digest I Ctrl+C it and Ctrl+V it to the .txt file.  I use IE to browse the web and any URL found I just right click and copy the shortcut to the .txt file.

Before I start IE, I run Text2Web ( www.virdi.demon.co.uk ), both also have a shortcut in the Taskbar, and this converts my .txt file into a .htm formatted file.  This file is set as my home page.

Normal text is not converted to a clickable URL, so is very useful for comments.

So as IE starts I have a screen full of all the URLs I want to look at.  Right click any and start in another window, to retain the home page and keep the downloaded pages for later viewing off-line.

Those visited show in a different colour.

Subject: Password Generator for Psion 5mx

Hello,

this is my first post, so I would be better to introduce myself. My name is Radek. I currently live in Walnut Creek, California. I got Psion 5mx last week and so far was able to solve most of the problems. I'm migrating from Newton MP2100 slowly.

I still will have to figure out how to transfer all my contacts from Newton to Psion. IrDA works only from one at a time. Also Psion is refusing to accept CF card. It says "Disk not present". I'll take it apart and see if it is the switch on CF card well.

What I really want ask is if there is a password generator for a Psion. I was trying to look it up through google.com with no luck so far. I work as a database administrator and have to come up with so many passwords! :-) I remember me writing some really simple programin OPL for data collection for Psion XP. Well, I might look into OPL again if nothing will show up.

Thank you,

Radek

Itamar,

>I can't connect with Opera to the net. Could this be because the proxy server settings are incorrect and if so what should these be for the UK ?

Proxy settings "for the UK" don't exist because whether you want to or need to use a proxy depends solely on your ISP. The first shot should always be "no proxy". In this case, Opera sends the HTTP request directly to the server in the URL. If you configure a proxy, the request is send to the proxy instead of the target server. The proxy then decides whether to fetch the document from an internal cache or forward the request to the target. Using proxies can improve performance if the cache works fine and the wire to the target or the server itself are busy. In corporate networks, most PCs don't have a direct connection to the Inernet and therefore using a proxy is the only way to connect to

webservers outside the local net.

From: Chris S Handley

Subject: Fix for second CronTab bug

Thanks to some help on Pda Street, I was able to track down the bug which causes CronTab to switch-off the Psion almost immediately after it turns it on.

The short story is that this fix can be downloaded from:

http://cshandley.web.users.btopenworld.com/CronTabFix.zip

PLEASE note that it will only work on an UNpatched (original) CronTab, therefore you must either first run the PatchRemover.opo (found in the :System\Apps\CronTab folder) or re-install CronTab.

The long story is that this bug only occurs if you run something as an "App/Doc" type, but not a "Macro" type, which explains why some people were able to use my FastBackup macro successfully and others were not...  Those having the problem (and mystifying me) were incorrectly running it as an "App/Doc" (although this way does happen to work).

BTW, please report if this patch causes any problems.  It shouldn't, but I have only tested it very quickly.

---

Chris Handley

P.S.  With all these bugs, I guess you can see why Pascal never raised the version number of CronTab above v0.91 :-)
