Hi,

the provider softhome.net bounced the digest with information:

"Connected_to_xx.xxx.xx.xx_but_sender_was_rejected./Remote_host_said:_554_does

Can someone explain please, what this means and what we can do to avoid such

Use in airplanes isn't a problem as you can switch the radio electronics off,

turning the Nokia 9500 into a non-wireless PDA. The same applies to similar

devices such as the SonyEricsson P800 and P900.

Dear Trygve,

<< I work as an 'IT-consultant' at a large office, and one of my tasks is to

periodically man the helldesk. Why it's called that? Well, today we received

about 20 calls from users who had received more or less cryptic 'blocked' or

'banned' messages, and were afraid that THEIR computers were infected.(Of

course they weren't as we run TWO different scanners, one on the email system

and another on evPC, and update the signature files every morning) >>

Be glad there are a number of employees who are alert and have sufficient

knowledge to see that something's not right and report it to the IT helpdesk.

Nice to know that your anti-virus defences aren't breached. However, don't

expect a salesman, purchasing clerk or secretary to know this as their area

of expertise isn't in IT but in purchasing, accounting, sales, logistics,

manufacturing or whatever. Treat them as "the hordes" (as mentioned later in

your message) and you discourage them from reporting things to the IT

helpdesk.

<< Why doesn't they use it? 'It's such a hassle to download the files'...

(The default setting is for the tool to download updates once every week... )

>>

Making anti-virus signature files available for download is only a

technological facility. Whether people are going to use it depends on the

facility taking account of the human factor. In case the download takes more

than 20 to 25 minutes, for example, it's a given that the vast majority of

users won't take advantage of it. Doesn't matter whether the download is once

a day, once a week or once a month.

From: Rolf Brunsting

Subject: Re: MBook Phone Numbers

Dear Manuel,

<< I have used psions now for 10 years, and I never quite understood how

smart dialing works, specially while traveling >>

It's actually quite simple as it uses the same conventions when making a

phone call.

a) When the phone number is in the same town or area you simply dial the

number,

b) When the phone number is in a different town/area you dial the area code

plus number,

and,

c) When the phone number is in a different country you dial the international

access code, country code, area code and number.

As a Psion won't know where you are you need to tell it where it is by using

the Home setting in the Time/World application. It's then able to evaluate

any number it needs to dial, as long as you've entered the number in the

international standard +[Country][Area][Number] format.

Say that the access point of my ISP is in Amsterdam : 010-1234567. When I

enter the number of my ISP in the standard format of +31101234567 my Psion

knows what it has to do.

1) When Home=Amsterdam it dials 1234567,

2) When Home=Rotterdam it dials 0101234567

and,

3) When Home=Paris it dials 0031101234567.

The additional information, such as the prefix zero for the area code as well

as the international access code are stored in the Time/World city database.

In other words, the Psion 'knows' from the city database that the area code

prefix for the Netherlands is a zero. Similarly, it knows the international

access code when dialling from France, which replaces the '+' in the

international standard phone number format.

The above also applies to the phone numbers you've entered in Contacts when

you use the DTMF tone dialling feature via the Psion's speaker. That is, when

you've entered the numbers in the +[Country][Area][Number] format. When

you're in Amsterdam, have set your Psion's Home to Amsterdam and tone-dial a

number in Amsterdam you'll only hear the bleeps corresponding with the

number. The country and area code, etc. are omitted. And in case changes have

been made to a city's area code you can modify it by using the 'Change city

details' function of the Time/World application.

This isn't all, as you may be dialling out from a hotel room so that you have

to dial a 9 to get an outside line. In case it's a small old country hotel

the hotel's exchange can still use pulse dialling rather than the current

tone dialling method. And the dial tone of the hotel exchange can be

different from the low burr you and your modem are familiar with. These are

covered by the Location properties you can define using the Dialling

application in the Control Panel. I've defined a Location which I've called

"Hotel - 9 - Tone". The definition includes:

- Dial a 9 for an outside line for both local and long distance calls

- Use tone dialling for the hotel exchange as well as the network exchange

- Wait for the dial tones of both hotel exchange and network exchange

I've also got a Location called "Langorf", named after a London hotel (in

which I used to stay quite regularly) that had a rather peculiar hotel

exchange. The settings in my "Langorf" location disregards, for example, the

dial tone so that the Psion dials 'blind'.

The combination of the Psion's Home, Location and Smart Dialling features

allow me make a connection with my ISP wherever I am. When, for example, I

want to connect to my Dutch ISP Planet Internet from my room in the Langorf

Hotel I set my Psion's Home to London and use the following settings in the

'Connect to Internet' dialog:

- From Location : Langorf

- To Internet service : Planet

- Using modem : Whatever modem I have with me

The line "Number to dial" then shows the correct number, based on ISP,

Location and Home settings. When I change the Location from "Langorf" to

"Mobile" the number to dial changes as the Mobile Location is for my mobile

phones. The Mobile location always uses the complete number in international

standard format. Reason why is, because the network always knows who you are

(SIM Card) and where you are (Cell tower link). The network therefore

automatically knows whether the call is a local, long distance or

international one.

The Psion's features have never defeated me. Still, in case there's a

situation these functions can't handle you can always create a temporary ISP

definition based on your existing one, switch Smart Dialling off and enter

the exact number to dial.

All providers I know of in G have a special local number with Country and

Area Code for calls from abroad. Sometimes it is nontrivial to obtain it

from Customer Support.

Unfortunately ;-) as I decided to leave Compuserve in the meantime this is

irrelevant to me. When they started, they were nice and very useful with the

Forums etc. although they didn't have access to the Internet at large they

were were the only ones with international e-mail access. Since they became

a 2nd rate AOL, they are comparatively expensive, even less Mac-friendly and

problem or just me ?

----------------------------------------------

Re: MMC/SD/MemoryStick/CF Cards

Out of all the available memory cards I definitely favour CompactFlash.

Why you might say ... well they are VERY robust, I remember a story

somewhere of someone who accidentally put a CompactFlash and SD card

through a full cycle wash in his trouser pocket... the SD card was

completely ruined .. whereas after drying the CompactFlash car it worked

perfectly.

They are the cheapest per MeagByte too of all the formats.

Also, the small ones, such as SD/MMC/xD are easily lost on surfaces like

grass etc.

xD to me is another non starter .... it seems to me mainly (or is that

exclusively ?) used by Fuji and like MemoryStick (Sony) is over priced !

Hardly any multi-card readers support xD anyway !

I own quite a few handhelds (Psion/Sharp/Hewlett Packard and Palm) and they

will all take CompactFlash except my two Palm, which are Sony and take

MemoryStick.

I bought a Canon Digital Camera for two reasons.. I have always used Canon

Cameras (was a Pro Photographer) and they take .. wait for it ... Compact

Flash !

MemoryStick is reasonably OK for me too, as I have the two Sony Clie's, a

nice small Sony U20 camera and also a Sony Digital Video camera and all use

MemoryStick .. but I don't like the price of them one little bit.

For me CompactFlash SHOULD win the battle .. but I am sure another

manufacturer will bring out yet another memory card ... sigh !

All for now my friends,

Marcus, I've only ever had this problem on my nB.  Never on my 5mx, Revo+ or

7.  If fact the nB is relatively unstable often requiring a soft reset,

whereas all my other Psions are very stable.  Could the TCP/IP problem be

causing the other, apparently unrelated to the Email app, problems?  (such as

Macro5 not working in parts until a reset)

I saw this TCP/IP fix on Symbian's site recently when I looked around after a

request from them to update my registration.  Which Psions is the fix for as

I saw it on the nB download page?

Malcolm, I've used DiskBench.opo on my 5mx to measure read and write speeds

of all drives.  But I don't know where I got it from.

You also like me have a nB.  I used a 7 before changing over to the nB,

transferring the 256Mb CF card.  I'm also a heavy user of SaveMail, but found

it very slow on the nB.  It was taking 16 seconds to open using the 256Mb CF,

but only a few on the 7.  I solved that problem by using an old 16Mb CF in

slot E: for use with SaveMail.

Conclusion: My SanDisk Ultra 256Mb is _much_ slower in the nB, but acceptable

in the 7.

I haven't seen the justification of this claim but I'd bet (statistically, of

Internet and email settings will depend on your provider. For modem settings

just select 'Psion Dacom Modem'. All the necessary entries for the card are

57000 Baud (a higher rate might give an error message), Connection Serial,
