Radek, I've got a similar (32Mb) CF that came with my Canon camera.

I suggest that you format it in the camera.  If this does not work (but
another CF is OK in the camera) then the CF is faulty.

If it does format, then take a few pictures.  Switch off camera and 5mx.
Transfer CF to 5mx.  Does CF show two folders, with pictures in one?

To use it mainly in the 5mx, then format it in the 5mx.  However...

I have an old Kodak camera 4Mb CF; it works in it's camera and pictures can
be seen on the 5mx.  But the 4Mb CF wont format in the 5mx.

Hope this helps.

Opinion, as science is also opinion.  Why?

Science is a set of observations that appear to conform to a set of rules,
that is our best current understanding of the facts.  So that understanding
is an opinion!

Subject: Modems / CF Disaster / Dual_O / Religion and CFs

Hi

Sorry if I have asked this already. I am having a computer crisis at the
moment. I have found an old US Robotics modem (56k FaxModem). I have
connected to my ISP OK, but the sound (white noise) keeps going all the time
that I am connected. Is this a faulty modem or a setting that needs changing?
I can certainly see why white noise is so effective when used as a torture
medium.

It had to happen eventually, and maybe because I was declaring my
embarrasment of backup riches, my (DaneElec) CF card has died. 256mb of D:
drive, and the thing containing most of the important things in my life has
died a death. Firstly I noticed the corrupt Address file, then the CF would
keep declaring itself corrupt every time that I ran a Powerbase file. I tried
to back up what I could, the previous night's backup had not been set to run,
but one days loss of data is not too bad. The last full backup of the drive
was over a week ago, but the regularly changing files are backed up on a
daily basis. The CF wont even format in a card reader, let alone the Psion,
so I have just ordered another 256mb CF from the good people at Expansys. It
may not be a fast one, but funds are tight at the moment. Don't wait - backup
now. Your turn may be next! Luckily I have a number of CFs, none quite big
enough, but a bit of data shuffling has got me working again.

Thanks for the advice on Dual_O. I will look at it as soon as my data is
shuffled back to the new CF card.

Praying didn't work for my CF card problems. Diabolism seemed a little
excessive on this occassion! It resolutely refuses to format beyond 52%.
Anyone know anything about low level formatting under DOS? Is it even worth a
try?

Dear Rolf,

electronics off, turning the Nokia 9500 into a non-wireless PDA. The same
applies to similar devices such as the SonyEricsson P800 and P900.<<

This only works in some airlines, and I would say the minority. Most of them
will demand you turn the complete thing off, and try to educate a flight
steward(ess) about the difference...

Many airlines even tell you in the pre-recorded message before take off "this
includes mobile phones so-called flight mode"...or something to that effect.

Believe me I have tried with the 9210/P800, and as far as I can recall:

BA - OK worked most of the times but failed occasionally
KLM - fail
Lufthansa - fail
Malaysian Airlines - fail
British Midlands - fail
SwissAir - OK (only tried once though)
Air France - fail (ok partly due to my somewhat rusty french)
SAS - fail (eeerr not even my 'mobile telephony savvy' home country)
Finnair - fail (!!!!!! not even the Finnish national airline !!!!)
Singapore airlines - fail

The safest thing is still the netBook/5mx because they neither have phone nor
CD-player (another contentious item).

Kind regards

Allan,

>Marcus, I've only ever had this problem on my nB.  Never on my 5mx, Revo+ or
7.  If fact the nB is relatively unstable often requiring a soft reset,
whereas all my other Psions are very stable.

I have the same impression about the netBook, but I have far more funny
things (like PsiLoc) on the nB than on my 5mx or Revo. I've always thought
that was the reason for some instability. The
machine is used in a different way from the smaller ones (Internet, WiFi,
Java versus just Agenda).

>Could the TCP/IP problem be causing the other, apparently unrelated to the
Email app, problems?
(such as Macro5 not working in parts until a reset)

I'm quite sure that that is not the case. The reported problem only occurs
while online over a PPP connection (modem, mobile).

>I saw this TCP/IP fix on Symbian's site recently when I looked around after
a request from them to update my registration.  Which Psions is the fix for
as I saw it on the nB download page?

There are two versions of the fix, one for the nB (including the Ethernet
drivers) and one for the "modem only" systems. Since I never had the problem
occur to me, I didn't install the fix yet. It probably cures some other
TCP/IP glitches, too, and so I will try it out some time.

Hi Steve.

I got a very nice reply from Neil but only after being accepted by his spam
protection programme.
You should have received an email with a link to a spam protection site where
you have to repete a word on the site. That will clear your address and your
initial email will be forwarded to  Neil.
Try again. Neil seems to be a very nice chap.

Cheers

Sorry Timothy, I don't know. No idea if this is the fault of EPOC, or Apple,
or Freepoc's vcalendar.

I also haven't worked out how to keep either calendar "updated" - swapping a
vCal file seems to completely overwrite what is on the other computer. At
least with vCards you can re-export your entire Psion Contacts database and
import it into Apple Address Book, to be given an item-by-item choice of
overwrite, update or ignore. Anyone else using this system, with ideas or
tips to offer?

Subject: EplayM

Hi!

A while ago, I installed the EplayM mp3 player software on my 5mx and then
didn't bother any more with it, as the sound quality isn't really good enough
for music. However, I've recently got hold of a couple of CD based lauguage
courses which I have ripped to MP3 and listen to on my MP3 player. This is an
application where the sound quality would not be very important, so the Psion
could be useful for this. What is the easiest way to convert high quality MP3
tracks to something suitable for EplayM? I'd prefer a Freeware solution of
course!

What kind of battery life can I expect when using EplayM for longer periods?

Answer to: Mike Dyer

Re.: Psion interest - They still make it, but at a price for which you can
buy laptops with full Windows functionallity, including very small ones that
are hardly larger than the nBook Pro. There are not many advantages for the
nBook Pro for the regular user replacing his old PDa but more for users that
need to run specific business applications as per the requirements of their
Companies.

Answer to: Rolf Brunsting

Re. Nokia 9500 - Yes, I know you can switch the phone part off in airplanes,
but did you ever try to convince a steward(ess) that you are really not using
the phone- but only the PDA part ? I doubt they have enough knowledge of
PDA's to understand it.

Answer to: Rolf Brunsting

Re.: Smart dialling - "create a temporary ISP definition" or use the little
program TheDialer to do the same and move to email when connected.

Answer to: vlad a

Re.: Compuserve - I still use them mainly for local access all over Europe.
Vodaphone UK has changed their charges of GPRS usage outside the UK and now
have a minimum charge per connection of almost 1 pound irrespective of the
bytes used. You connect, send out one email, disconnect, bang 1 pound. It is
outrageous how they make momeny on roaming in Europe. A local call in the
city I am in still costs me 50 pence, the same as phoning back to the UK from
where I am. Crazy !  So I connect locally to Compuserve from my hotel room,
pay for a local call and than connect to my Freeserve mailbox. Considerably
cheaper. The costs are about 7 pounds a month, certainly worth my while.

Re. TCP/IP fix - My mBook is very stable and I have no resets but for once.
Could it be a program you use ?
