Subject: US adapter: the result
Hello all,
As I wrote before I was looking for a 110 V / 60 Hz adapter for my Malaybook. I have found it at www.sitashop.com . It costed $30 + $13.70 for the mail.
While it came in a wite box with the text "netBook / Series 7 US Power Supply" accompanied by an original Psion guarantee certificat, it is actually a PSU from Cincon (www.cincon.com). It is the TR36A15-OXF01.
This PSU takes as input 100 to 240 V, 50/60 Hz and as output 15 V, 1.3A. The PSU is regulated.
The actual adapter comes with 2 holes on the side in which you can plug a standard power cable. It comes with the US power cable, but my own Dutch power cable (from an old radio) worked on it as well.
This is very nice, because this makes it a truly universal power adapter !
The US distributor for Cincon adapters is Mouser (www.mouser.com) and it also sells the same adapter for $30, according to their web site.
Sitashop did a good job. The delivery time Malaysia - The Netherlands was from March 9th to March 19th and I could track the package on the internet.
The photo of the US adapter on Sitashop's site is not at all like the adapter I received. I guess they sold out their stock and found another adapter with the same specs.
I am very happy with this particular adapter, because it is suitable for Europe and the US and it did have the correct Psion plug. Therefore there was no need for cut-and-replace actions.
Yours truly,
Thomas van der Zijden

Agreed, I've been using a Garmin GPS with a Psion 3a since 1996 and now with 5mx & 7.
> I've got the software (City and Route maps from TomTom etc),
There's a lot more.

If you are going to use a GPS mainly with a Psion then any Garmin GPS will work apart from the newer ones that don't use a serial port, like Psions; but have a USB port.
As a cyclist and camper then the eTrex, being small, would be ideal. I would only recommend a Garmin for various reasons - best after sales service - very compatible with all software.
My two are now like Psions - not made anymore - GPS-75 and eMap. If you can find an eMap still in stock then it's very good. My next will probably be the new 2610 (that has USB, but I'll keep the two others for use will Psions) as it can also route plan, has a touch screen - uses CF cards - like Psions; and a remote control.
For vehicle use, buy one that can take an external antenna as the GPS needs to 'see' as much of the sky as possible. A motorhome with a Luton cab will shield the signals as will a windscreen with heater wires in it.
That's a start Will.

I know very little about WiFi but if I recall correctly it works at 2.4Ghz. When this was announced there was much comment about interference with other radio services using that band of frequencies. Radio hams and others can transmit on similar (same?) frequencies.
Much like some car alarms remotes where folk can get locked out of their cars because the car manufacturer used the same frequency that I transmit and receive on, so I have to be careful, as my Land Rover's one of those.

This is because floors of (office) buildings are more dense to radio signals than walls.

My 60C uses 2 AA cells. I don't believe I can get 30 hours on a set. After about a 5 hour bike ride the battery icon indicates about 1/2 full.
> I can't comment on anything regarding connectivity to Psions because > these models are simply too new on the market.
As I mentioned in my previous post, the 60C has a USB connection, so I don't know how you would connect to a Psion - maybe someone with electronic knowledge can supply direction on how (if feasible) to modify a USB-Serial cable. One would be carrying a lot of cable, I think.

Hold on your manual entry for a while please. I am personally getting excited about OPL again, since it is now available in an almost full release for the P800.
Since this seems to be a common problem, it appears that more Psion users migrate to P800/P900 than they migrate to Series 60 phones, I'd like to look into this matter.
The problem is that there is currently no Data application for P800/P900, so I will need to write one myself. There is no Sheet either in P800, so Owen's workaround will not work.
Are you using Data or is your database created by another application?

Subject: SecureDrive for Psion released
Hello digest readers,
After 1,5 years of testing, SecureDrive for Psion has been released :)
SecureDrive is a unique program for Psion that allows you to keep your data in secure form without you having to think about it. All these actions are performed "on the fly" and are transparent to you. Program adds new disks visible as regular disks and you can work with them as with regular ones - store your files there, install applications onto these disks, run them, etc. But you can be sure that your data is confidential.
Moreover, you can immediately close the access to your data by locking a disk only without unmounting it (manually, by hotkey, when device cover is closed, etc). Also you can create disks without encrypting them, for ordering your files only and much more other functions.

Thank you very much for taking the time to explain so thoroughly. I have tried lots of different settings and moved the source and the laptop around pretty much already but it seems that I sometimes receive interferences from outside my flat, perhaps a cordless telephone or a micro wave oven that spoil my signal. My signal may stay "Excellent" for days anywhere in my flat and suddenly one day it oscillates between "Excellent" and "Very low" or even "no connection" without me doing anything different and then I can be for hours or even days with a bad signal where I usually work on my laptop. When this happens, I move my laptop nearer the source and it fixes the problem. I have looked for another WiFi signal in the neighbourhood with my Sony Clie UX50 but did not find any, this is why I think that it may be some other type of equipment that interferes with the signal.

Thank you for pointing me to your very interesting article. I don't want to disable WZCS at the source though because I need it to find automatically the signal when I wake up my computer in the morning. So I shall rather try to use the stop and start shortcuts on my desktop to only stop WZCS when the signal gets instable.
When I right click the wireless connection icon on the toolbar, it allows me to view the available wireless networks and there I can de-tick the case for "Use windows to configure my wireless networks settings". Would this be the equivalent of disabling the WZCS?

Re.: Rogue Fax accounts - Shift-Ctrl-L will show all the mailboxes but not the Fax boxes on my Psion. Are you sure this is the right answer ?
Answer to: Will Green
Re.: Which GPS? - I use the eTrex with my Psion (from 5MX to S7 and now mBook) and did not have any problems. If you want to use it extensively in car get the cable that also connects the eTrex to the cigarette lighter and get the in-car adaptor for your Psion too. Without these you will spend a lot of moeny on batteries.
Answer to: Jim Watson-Gove
Re.: MBook and 5mx - Your solution works as long as you don't have programs on the CF card that are bound to the identification number of your Psion like Money, Route- and Streetplanner. I would have to re-install these programs (or at least the APP file) each time I change the CF card from machine to machine.

Subject: GPS
After a buyer let me down I still have my Garmin GPS2, which works well with Psions. As you have heard already, you need to decide whether you want to use one with built in maps or not, and the type of use that you will put it to. Built in maps are of little use when you are out in the wilds in most cases. One thing that few people consider are the GPS based compass. Most don't work when you are stood still. Look at the top of the Garmin Geko range (301 from memory) to get a "proper" built in compass. The most useful piece of advice that I can give you is that if you wander around www.garmin.com there is a page that allows you to compare the Garmin models against each other. No, I am wrong, there is another more useful piece of advice. If you are going to use it in a car, make sure that it can run on the car's voltage withoout some expensive adaptor needed. Look at www.serialleads.co.uk for your cabling needs. Oh, and keep away from ones that use AAA batteries (that will be the Geko then!).
I have been hoping to fill you all in on my netPad purchase. I think that the last problem will hopefully go away soon. I apologze in advance for the length of the piece, but there is a lot to say!

Yes, you mentioned it before, although I may not have commented. Crontab uses some rather complex maths to calculate repeating stuff like Working Days, and it would not be surprising if there is a mistake in there somewhere.
I am afraid that at the moment I do not have the time/motivation to look into it, and probably I won't have in the future either, but I will pass on your report.

No.

Re.: Mbook Internet Connection Impasse - You sent the message again as no-one replied ? I am not sure what exactly you try to do. Are you trying to use the email program which does not work or are you trying to get to your email via Opera / Web ? Which ISP do you use to connect and with which ISP is your mailbox ? I use 4 ways to get to my email at Freeserve.co.uk as well as Compuserve, 1/ MochaPPP via my PC, 2/ the Wifi card at home, 3/ the modem card in hotels and 4/ GPRS. Could it be a problem with the available memory ?

Re.: Which GPS - At the time I bought a cable to connect the Psion to the eTrex which also supplies the eTrex with power from the cigarette lighter. I have further a car adaptor for my mBook (S7) and can drive for hours with the navigation on. Sometimes I really need it, sometimes it is just fun while driving by myself.

Re.: Compact Flash "Disk not Present" - You can copy most programs straight from the C disk to the same folder on the D disk. There are a few you will have to re-install, but I can't give you a list and don't know what programs you have installed. Move them one by one and you will quickly enough find which one works or not.
