I *do* have the CronTab fix installed. My macro works as a Macro when
used via a hotkey with Macro5. As I told Chris on the PDAStreet forum,
it works with neither "Macro" nor "App/Doc" via CronTab+fix.

I *have* installed the new version of Macro5 (including the lib file).
I still get the same thing trying to use CronTab.

I gave that a try - installed the "old" fix version - it told me I had
a newer version installed and did I want to overwrite it - yes. When I
started up Macro5, I got a message "Incompatible OPX version". So I've
re-installed the lib file included in the new Macro5 zip file and
Macro5 works once again.
Maybe now that Pascal is back in business there'll be a light at the
end of the tunnel for CronTab, which I think is the varmint.

I would only add that you also need to add the fonts to your Psion using
PsiWin in addition to the method that Alan describes. This gives you the
capability to print these fonts using the Printer Via PC option.
As the mbrainsoftware website says:
"The built-in Printer via PC printer driver will only allows you
to select extra fonts after you have added fonts with PsiWin/EPOC Connect,
and the only the fonts you have installed. Also note that this driver cannot
print symbolic fonts."

Andy - I've had very similar experiences. EDU hasn't crashed, but it has
found much the same troubles; I'm only glad I have bacups of the Data and
Word files it had to trash. My reaction is like yours: my long-standing
faith in EPOC is shaken. I've ordered an mBook (see other message) but I
very, very nearly cut losses to buy a new Apple iBook, which is a lovely
little machine. The deciding factor was that an mBook is about a third of
the weight and half the size of an iBook; and I've had good service from EPOC
for a long time, so that giving it a further lease may be reasonable;
besides, unless I'm travelling, I have the services of a G4 eMac running OS
10.3.4 (since the day before yesterday - the OS I mean) and it is simply
creamy, not just in its colour.

I bought a Libretto, and yes it is a lovely little device. Unfortunately, I
use glasses at my 19" desktop monitor, and have them giving me arm's length
viewing. I found the text on the Libretto was very small, just too small to
see. When I craned forward, I quickly developed a bad back. So I swapped it
for another Series 5. Besides, the battery on my Libretto was defunct.

Re: Various (old) posts about mapping non-English characters onto
English keyboards:
I might have this wrong, but it seems that people want to assign all the
non-accented letters to keys, and then assign accented characters, even
if the accented characters "deserve" (because they are used frequently)
to be put on a more useful "plain" key (ie one that doesn't require any
modifiers: Ctrl, Fn or Shift)
I know that in French "é" is more common than "x", so if I wanted a
useful keyboard layout in French, I would assign "é" to the "x" key.
(And I would get "x" through a more convoluted look-up process.)
This might nave been stating the blindingly obvious! But in case those
who need foreign characters mapped to their keyboard don't do this
already, you should!

Hi Andy,
>I always thought that the OS was really good and perhaps I am just having
terrible luck recently, but this is what happened tonight: -
Looks like bad luck to me :-(. In my opinion, EPOC itself is still a very
relible OS but that's apparantly not true for some applications (Just like
Windows which is designed to crash but some apps don't).
Opera was written with a C standard library and enough memory in mind, not
EPOC on a memory
contrained system. To make Opera compile, the designers implemented the C
library on top of the
EPOC classes. But that only implements the functionality and leaves the
programmer with all the
stability and security problems of C, its dangerous pointers and strings
(which are all forbidden in "real" EPOC programming.) A good EPOC program
deals very gracefully with low memory situations
while being very careful with using up memory at all. Opera seems to be
designed to eat up all
memory and then crash.
Your CF card problems seem to be related to either a hardware fault or some
corruption on the card. I
gave up on "repairing" fat formatted drives. If neccessary, I try to read as
much information as is still accessible (probably still needing a chkdisk to
be able to do just that). I then format the drive and copy back the
information. I see that you attempted the same but the netBook soft reset on
the restore operation. It is probably time to replace the CF or check if your
CF card slot as a technical problem. I assume that you did all you "repair"
work with a power supply connected?

Subject: Opera
Hi Folks,
When Korbinian said "You can't _save_ a pdf-file with Opera (I suppose you
use Opera). Perhaps you can change this behaviour anywhere or perhaps find a
workaround (like reinstalling the pdf-app or something like that), but it's
really strange..." I remembered that I had that problem. I usually use my Mac
for PDF files now but, using Opera on my 5mx, I found that the PDF files
*were* downloaded as PDF files into the Opera cache with the right icon and
an Opera generated name. I just renamed them and moved them!
But, like Korbinian, I had altered something in the Preferences section.
The other thing I remember is that you have to load the Opera preferences
file into a text editor to do some things - particularly to move the cache.
My cache is on my D: disk (I only browse the 'Net on one of my two 5mxs with
it's 256MB CF card which is pretty much a fixture).
Happy days,
Phil.

I am chuffed to bits with it.
It is is mint condition, and I got loads of accessories with it for only £151

My gadget line up is a mini laptop for the serious stuff, a pocket computer

Re.: Opera - I think that not many people use their Psions to surf the web at
all. Whatever program you use, it is slow and a lot of pages will not open
anyhow. I use it only in "emergency" cases when on the road, which has been
once or twice in many years. I think the experience of Andy Hayes confirms
this is not a tool for surfing the web (although others probably have done so
for many years without problems).

Re.: Fonts - AAAAHHHHH, now I understand why my .TTF files don't work, I
don't use Fontmachine <G>. I actually use a small program Fload which can use
only .gdr font files. After a soft reset it will automatically load the fonts
in System\fonts\custom into memory before starting the OS. I suppose I will
have to be satisfied with arila narron, bungalo and comic sans.

Re.: T610 + GPRS configuration - It works very well for me with my mBook and

Subject: Mail Archiving
Dear Steve,
I do not really know how to answer your question but I am dropping a few
lines about this subject anyway since I think it may be a topic which could
be interesting to others too....
I am using both apps, with a preference for SaveMail. Probably I like the
fact of a machine doing kind of a housekeeping job such as ... putting an
archive in order.
I started dealing with it in the first semester of 2003 and now I currently
have 11 data .box files in my archive folder. each one of them "weights"
about 2 MegaBytes (which corresponds to one month email messages), apart from
the very first two which are about 5 MegaBytes each. this calls for
(2*9)+(5*2)=28 MegaBytes in total at the time of writing.
Attachments are stored in a separate folder and this allow for deleting the
ones which are redundant or not necessary, while keeping the original
message. Sometimes I wonder how big is my desktop outlook programme with all
the inbox/outbox messages I have kept on it since 2002... I am afraid it is
actually *much* bigger.
As a result, the CF I do have in my nB is my "mobile archive"... or my
"personal reserve memory" if you prefer...
BTW, I experienced a major crash when the first .box reached the size of 5,5
MB about one year ago. I talked to Sergio Alisi, author of this app, and he
recommended me not to go further than 2,5 MB each file, anyway. I guess I was
probably establishing a world record of .box data file size, without even
knowing it ;-)
I am not very good at writing Macros. However, I have just been successful in
writing one which allows me to perform an automatic search in every .box data
file. For this purpose, a good guide to Macro5 has been an epoc word document
given by Keith Giles, whom I wish to acknowledge for this.
I suppose there may be others using the email application as much as I do...
any other comments about this?
cheers

Subject: Thanks for help with pdf+
Hi All,
I am very pleased to report that my pdf+ problem has now been resolved. The
problem was that when I received an email with a pdf file attached, my 5mx
showed the dreaded '?', and of course it would not open, though I had no
problem opening it on my PC.
The help I received from Digesters, on and off the List, has been
unbelievable, absolutely overwhelming, and greatly appreciated. Thanks to
Keith Giles, George Cooke, Marcus von Cube, Phil Aypee, Kate Head, Korbinian
Demmel, Astrid and, of course, Itamar. Based on the suggestions I received,
I reinstalled the pdf+ and it now works perfectly. If only I had thought
about it earlier! It now looks so simple...
So thanks again to all
