Hello all,

Has anyone downloaded previously the shareware app 'Language Teacher

English-Polish'? Its by Ectaco.Inc.

I've tried the links at www.psionplace.com but they are broken.

If someone has the shareware app, I'd be grateful of a copy, then I can

register it individually. Many thanks / dziekuje!

regards

Peter

such silly mistakes. Certainly I have made many.

PA>>Apparently it's good nettiquette to ignore such mistakes unless there is

good reason not to. It doesn't apply in this case, that I realise, but I do

know that elsewhere such criticism has caused offence, even when meant kindly.

I think Euan was simply responding to Steve Litchfield's request which I

quote below:

"If anyone would like to correct anything on

http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/historyofpsion.htm

then feel free! I've attempted an update on my old article from Palmtop. See

what you think."

Apparently Mr Litchfield has corrected the error as well. While it is one

thing to be tolerant of transient communications (pardon my poor command of

the English language and grammar), its quite another to leave alone a known

errata in an electronic article, which can be corrected easily and quickly.

Nice article by the way, although I already knew most of the story. Kudos to

Euan for spotting the typo, I honestly did not see it the first time.

Warm regards,

Koi Hin

Web is faster , Opera can be slow , even on a device with a much faster CPU

I have used Opera on a Nokia 6600 Symbian phone and found it pretty decent

Now that I have my BTAP up and running I could put Opera through its paces (

Of course Web pages look funny (sometimes ) or take forever to render ( most

There's an alternative , however : NetFront , wich has more consistent

Even if the memory leak issues have been adressed , both are prodigious

there (32 megs of ram as opposed to 16 on the phones)

The verdict : The two major browsers for the Arm platform have come a long

way towards reaching compatibility with todays web but device limitations and

sloppy coding (causing many pages to take ages to load or even spontaneous

reboots ) make the experience less than rewarding

printers, plotters, digital cameras.  So typically you can get a USB to

whatever adaptor that plugs into a PC, and connects to a fairly dumb

non-USB peripheral (and comes with software to fake the connection).

However you typically can't go from a USB peripheral to a controller that

doesn't already have USB.  So you can go from say Windows PC with USB, and

a USB converter to a parallel printer, or a serial connection digital camera,

or a serial GPS system.  However you generally can't

It is now possible to link USB peripherals to a PDA/Smartphone that only has

embedded BT/IRCOMM/WiFi

This requires some form of bridging device that comes in the form of some

bland nondescript plastic or sheet metal box , containing an embedded PC or

PDA platform , running linux or bsd

Subject: netBook for Sale

Hi all

I am settling into life with a Mac Powerbook and finding alternatives to the

most important apps that I used on my netBook, so it is time to start waving

a fond farewell to the world of EPOC.

The first item to go is a genuine UK netBook. I bought this from a list

member who had used it for about 10 hours. I have used it for a lot

more than that, but it is in perfect condition. It has the 32mb upgrade chip

fitted. It will come with a power supply. The CF that came with it is

currently in Sussex, so hopefully my sometimes reliable son will

send it up here prior to me sending the netBook to the buyer, but it will be

part of the sale whatever. So will the original netBook CD

which includes PsiWin and an electronic netBook manual. Also included will be

a random Palmtop CD and a PsiWin cable mad by Chris Archer of

www.serialleads.co.uk fame. Price is 250 ukp including post and packaging

by the slowest and cheapest method to any UK address. If you want me to send

by registered post add 10 ukp.

Email meif you want it. I am not looking for

offers. Payment to be by electronic transfer to my Abbey National account, or

UK cheque, which will have to clear first, or cash in a registered envelope.

First come first served.

Thanks

Subject: CF brand recommendations?

I know this is a perennial topic, but...  I've recently purchased a (used)

5mx, and the generic CF card (originally purchased for a digital camera) I've

been using in my MalayBook suffers the usual corruption problems.

I've alos had problems with the same CF card in my Lexar USB reader, but I

can't tell whether  the problem is the card or the reader.

I've read the FAQ, various Web sites, and this digest, and my head is

spinning from contradictory advice.  Simpletech cards are fast, Simpletech

cards are slow.  Toshiba controller good, Toshiba controller bad.  Etc.

The best advice seems to be, "test in your device," but I can't find anyone

who will let me.  You break the blister pack, you've bought it.

What's a poor boy to do?  I'm not overly concerned with speed (should I

be?)  I'm *much* more concerned with reliability.  I mostly want to be

able to maximize working memory for large programs (I post to a blog that

requires functionality available only in GrandRapid, not Opera -- I am

using GR on 5MX and MalayBook, if anyone needs a beta tester) by

installing a lot of large programs on the CF.  And I want to be able reliably

copy CF backups to and form a desktop computer (which corrupts

the CF card with my current card and reader).

SimpleTech cards seem consistently to be described as the most reliable, and

are cheap, but some people say ther are very slow.  Should I care, if I'm

mostly using the CF for propgram storage?  Will it take 5 minutes to launch a

big app from a 256MB CF?

The EPOC FAQ says Dane-Elec cards are "Cheap, fast, perfect on 5mx, but

unable to write warnings on Netbook".  What is the symptom of "unable to

write warnings on Netbook"?  Corrupt card? Or?

Any recommendation of a USA source of 128MB or 256MB card that's cheap,

adequately fast, and tested in both 5MX and netBook would be welcomed.

Subject: Shuffling Savemail Archives

Hello all,

we use savemail a lot - at least my wife does, I am much less organised, and

tend to wait till the end of the year then create one huge annual savemail

archive!

She wanted to know how to move one single record from one archive file to

another. We could not see a way to do this simply using the built in Data

programme's menus. The only solution seemed to be to copy the mesage (ctrl-A)

then laboriously paste it into all the separate fields of the second file

before deleting it from the first.

Surely this would be worth automating, either as part of Savemail or as a

stand-alone macro? Can anyone help?

The main program warns if the battery status is not "Good", while the macro

avoids backing-up if the battery status is less than "Low" (i.e. it is

"Very low").  Since I no-longer use my Psion5, I can't remember what they

translate to in actual usage.

> How about making them user-adjustable?

That shouldn't be necessary in theory, since there should be a specific level

above which there won't be problems.  I have been hoping (so far in vain)

that someone would tell me the right level, then there wouldn't be

the problem.

Re.: TomTom CityMaps - You are right, althoug when I checked at the time with

TomTom in the Netherlands (speaking the language) they told me there was

hardly any difference between that version and the Streetplanner 2000

or Millenium or whatever it was called. All the newer versions since that one

were not for EPOC anymore. The later version, called Navigator, automatically

calculated a new rout when you went wrong, not so Citymaps.

Re.: Email setup - Most certainly possible. I always send the digest out with

the smtp of Eclipse while using the Freeserve account for POP3. Once

coonected to the internet you can open any POP3 account.

Re.: TomTom Maps - At the time I bought the upgrade CD. Indeed, TomTom do not

have any EPOC programs anymore, although as indicated earlier their

maps still work for EPOC.

Subject: Nokia takes on Microsoft in mobile laptop market

That's a headline in today's Microscope, a PC trade weekly journal.  They

report that a 'senior source at Nokia' has said that Nokia are trialling a

sub-notebook, designed for mobile wire-less Internet access.

It has many advantages over a traditional Windows laptop (now that's not too

difficult is it!) and is powered by Nokia's Series 60 software running on the

Symbian OS.  The notebook has a far longer battery life than a Windows

laptop.  The OS has a smaller footprint than Windows, is more

robust and boots up instantly, while shutting down as fast while saving data.

Nokia also believes that it's software is less prone to crashes than Windows.

An Intel spokesman is reported as saying that consumers will be tempted to

buy it for their own use but expects that corporations will be more likely to

buy Microsoft as it's software supports security protocols.

This sounds much like an updated EPOC netBook, but I'm a bit lost about the

security protocols from Microsoft that are the prime perpetuator of virus

laden e-mails.

We can live in hope.

I've not followed the versions after ER5, so could someone please explain in

a few words the differences of the various later versions, such as

Series 60.

The 2620 has not replaced the 2610.  It's the third in the series.  One could

say that the 2610 is the basic model.  The 2650 uses external vehicle mounted

sensors, which are used during GPS signal loss, to continue to plot position;

ie dead reckoning.

The 2620 has a built-in hard disk drive.  To many this will be an improvement

over the 2610 as my understanding is that maps are already on this drive.

But to many on this list the ability to install their choice

of maps on different CF cards, would make the 2610 their preferred

choice.  It's definitely my choice.

The 2620 uses a modified MagicStor 2Gb CF hard drive, but it's not removable,

so if it fails - tough.  But plugged into a 2610, it could be replaced.  As a

digital photographer, you will probably have heard that CF hard drives in

cameras are possibly venerable to mechanical shock.

The 2610 being cheaper than the 2620, it could just be in your budget.

I bought my eMap from a company in Bedford who sell at discount, but I don't

know if they are the cheapest now.  I bought in person at a Land

Rover show (the next is in a fortnight's time, so I will see him

again.  Some folk I would never buy from, due to their attitude etc., however

I liked this person.  I might buy a 2610 from him, if the price is good when

I see him next.

Have a look at www.offroadstore.co.uk .  01234 266553  He trades as H S

Elmac, but has just merged with Patriot Roof Racks.  I've not looked at his

web site for sometime so I don't know what it's like now.
