Subject: France Overlay/Digest Archive
Recently someone mentioned they had an overlay for all the cities in France
that were available for Street Planner (or maybe CityMaps). I first did a
search in the Psioneering archive for Epoc Digest
http://www.psioneering.co.uk/site-search-display.html on Street Planner,
TomTom, CityMaps, and overlay, but found nothing. I also did a search on
France and it came up with 1 item which seemed to have nothing to do with
Psion. Then I noticed the last update of the database was 19 Sept 2002.
So I have questions:
1. Could the person who has the overlay please send it to me with any
instructions?
2. What's happened to the archive - is there any now? Or am I using the
archive site incorrectly?

Subject: IR Link
Infra red Link seems unreliable. I use a Compaq Evo N410C laptop for backup
of my MC218. No problem running Psiwin 2.3 via cable. When I use IR it
works sometimes, but more often not, despite the laptop recognising the MC218
& showing an IR icon. Rebooting the laptop & soft resetting the MC218 seems
to make no difference. What can I do to improve things? Or, for that matter,
what am I doing right when I do get a link?

According to my owner's manual, under Driver Installation it says, "Note: The
driver should not be installed for Windows ME and XP." So, while the reader
came with a CD, I didn't use it, just plugged it into my computer.
Had never read any farther into the booklet. Going through it all just now, I
note that the instructions also say, "If your Mac OS is OS 10.1.2 or above,
you don't need to install any driver."

Ciao Kevin,
>>>I didn't come across any POP3 or STMP settings.... basically it is
thelatter, plus a dial up number, which I require: I just wish to use the ISP
to get online and retrieve my own email. I am only going on holiday. <<<
you may also evaluate the following ones:
www.tin.it
www.virgilio.it
www.tiscali.it
www.infinito.it (never actually tried it, but a good friend of mine uses this
as his main personal account)
these are good options if you will use a landline modem.
BTW, PLS note that there are interesting GPRS promotions offered by national
mobile service providers such as TIM, VODAFONE and WIND.
my m.s.p. is Vodafone Omnitel and they are promoting an internet
pay-as-you-go SIM card ("internet ricaricabile"). by accepting a special
offer of 30 EUR, you would be able to use internet without any limit from
your GPRS-enabled phone connected with your ER5 machine or laptop.
with 20 EUR they should be giving you a limited offer (no more than 500 MB in
one month, IIRC).
by this way, if you use SMTPauth from Marcus Von Cube, you would not even
need to subscribe to an italian ISP. this is the solution I actually use
everyday when I am on the move.
As a result, I send my daily mail from my tin.it address even if I am on the
Vodafone network.
In case you need to know more, PLS email me offline so that I can send you
more detailed information about the GPRS connection with vodafone.

memories of three different holidays I spent there in the past.

Subject: Backup with low battery
Hi Itamar,
From where do you know, that 5mx and 5 do approximate the voltage displayed?
As far as I know, they approximate the displayed current, but measure the
voltage.
In my recently updated batterygraphic-program (works now on netBook too and
should run on Revo as well), I use the voltage from the systeminfo and have
no suspicion that it is not measured. I measured the voltage myself under
different loading conditions and compared it with the value from the program.
It was in close correlation.
A reason for a variation of the voltage at which writing is no longer
possible is the type of battery you use. The parameter is the inner
resistance of the battery. Guess you voltage before writing is just a
little higher than the critical voltage (or what the OS supposes to be the
critical voltage). Writing to the CF needs some current to flow. Using a NiMH
rechargeable battery (very low inner resistance) the voltage drop induced by
the writing current will be low. Using a "normal" battery (high inner
resistance) the voltage drop may be too big.
The two systems with different batteries but identical voltage before writing
will react different in the same situation.

I use a literally no-brand USB 2.0 6-in-1 Card Reader and never had any
problems connecting at client's offices or service bureaus, without the
need to install drivers. The systems which I distintively remember connecting
with are Windows XP, Windows 2000 (and all their various incarnations). I
paid about the equivalent of US30 for it a few years ago and it has served me
faithfully ever since. If the device you have in mind does require the
installation of drivers, then I would seriously advice you to reconsider as
there are certainly those that do not.

I can connect my T610 to S7, 5mx and Revo, all with the same
settings. Like Itamar, my dial up number is *9***2#. Also, I do not have the
GPRS connectivity update installed on any machine: in fact, if I
rightly recall, installation of this actually impeded my connection, and I
think you might try with it uninstalled... Good luck!

Many thanks indeed for all that info! I think I can follow it all, but will
take you up on your kind offer if I have difficulty with GPRS. Actually,
my msp here is O2, and I understand they may have a roaming agreement with
WIND which, if correct, might suit me fine.

Just for the sake of having checked it all, could you check the price of the
roaming agreement between WIND and O2?
FYI, GPRS roaming between Vodafone and her french partner (SFR) in France
last year costed me a fortune... Now Vodafone is launching a new
promotional campaign and I hope it will be different...
I hope it will it be the same also for WIND and O2...
happy holiday in Italy!

Hi again Gianluca,

I have done this. O2 has agreements with (a) TIM, cost 8.88 EU per Mb, and
(b) WIND cost 12.82 per Mb. In the light of that, I think that the prepaid
SIM route is the way to go for GPRS, and perhaps you might kindly mail me
off-Digest with the Vodafone settings? Thanks again.
To All:
Does any reader in France know if there are prepaid GPRS offers in that
country, please?

Re.: Copy & Paste - Interesting, my mB does not reset itself, but I do get
"Disk corrupt" when I try to copy a file over itself after updating it.
As to your problem with the modem card, did you try to set it not to wait

dial tone ?

Subject: Serial to USB
Hi Itamar
Just to back up David Steer's message. I, too, use a Belkin serial to USB
adaptor without any real problem. I use it for my NBook, and I use a
serial port for my 5mx. I restrict PsiWin to those 2 ports (via Connections
in the Properties folder). It always says it cannot find the connection when
I switch from one Psion to the other, but always connects
on the second try. If I am reconnecting back to the Psion last used, it
connects immediately.
I suggest you get an adaptor and restrict PsiWin to looking for just the one
port. You should then have no problems.
At risk of 'teaching grandmother to suck eggs', on a MS WIN machine, you can
see which port(s) your device(s) are linked to by going to Control Panel,
right click on Administrator Tools then left click Computer Management/Device
Manager/Ports, and they are then listed together with
what device(s) are using them. Mine says 'Belkin F5U103 USB Serial Port (Com
3)'.
Alternatively, trial and error gets there eventually!

Philip Carlisle

Hi digesters,
Only for information:
I use a Kingston 512MB (bought from www.pulster.de) in my 5mxPro and had no
problems till now. I use it how I got it and didn't have fromated it in my
psion. (Was thinking to format it if I will get any problems.)
I only uses it in my mxPro except performing a backup (while copying to a
win2000 Laptop) via a PCMCIA-adapter.
At the beginning I had problems with some files (all opo-files, which were
interestingly enough all in capital letters although I have never named files
this way). After copying this files to C (at this point also renaming them)
and copying back to D everything has worked fine.
