5mx stylus holder

-----------------

I had a similar problem with my S5. The retaining clip is nothing more than

a piece of plastic and a spring. It is located in a very cramped spot. That

is why seperating the case a little frees it up when the spring is not

releasing. If you're brave enough, remove the cover as I did and make sure

the components are seated correctly (very obvious when viewed). A little

electrical (non conducting) oil or a wax rub in the locality of the spring

clip may prevent future sticking. Once I did this, I never had a release or

inserting problem with the stylus again.

Windows XP

I had a problem with PsiWin on XP and my S5/netBook. I determined it was an

initialisation or handshaking problem between the XP workstation and the

PDA. I resolved this by stopping the PsiWin connection, creating a

Hyperterminal connection to the com port. Waiting for the Psion to display

its broadcast initialisation string in the Hyperterminal window, closing

Hyperterminal and attempting to establish a connection via PsiWin. This

worked consistently and only requires a couple of shortcut clicks once setup.

Hmm, we have the two magazines Palmtop User, and Psion Computer. Both only

get published once every six months, one has so little content it seems

hardly worth it sadly, and the other has so much it never gets published...

Subject: Windows XP

Answer to Bob

Bob, I am not a super expert, so take this for what's worth.

I had a no-go try with a serial to USB adapter on my portable Toshiba

running Win XP (it features USB 2 ports) and my MC 218 - equal to a 5 MX.

It just did not work and what is worse the port had permanently become a

serial and did not work anymore as an USB 2. So I returned the adapter, got

a refund, and only (seldom) transfer files (no contacts, no sync calendar)

with the CF card in the PCMA port and psiWin 2.3.3 in the applications.

At the office, I have a desktop running XP which has both a serial port and

a USB 1 port, so no problem to sync (hardware-wise) my MC 218 with XP

outlook calendar (edition 2002) in this case. I have PsiWin 2.3.3 also in

this case, downloaded from the Psion site.

But I have a bug or my MC 218 has a bug, in that after a synchro, the

sounds disappear from the MC 218. And then come back after a synchro, to

then disappear again.

Answer to: David Steer

Re.: Serial to USB - Thanks for the answer. Without the "serial to USB"

adaptor MochaPPP works fine in the office and has done so for several years

now. It is only with the addition of the serial to USB adaptor that I

started to have the problem. Fortunately enough the bank can send me an USB

card reader after receipt of which I can connect my Psion via the normal

serial port again. Furthermore, we will be moving offices soon and in the

new office I plan to put a wireless network and than I can use my Wifi

card, just slike I do at home already.

Answer to: Chris Cooper

Re.: 5mx backlight failure - You can of course buy a new 5MX at Clove

Technology for Gbp 195.- <G>. I don't think it is the screen cable problem,

at least I don't remember hearing that it causes the loss of the

backlighting. You can of course continue using it without the backlight, I

used my 5MX at the time mostly without. But what can you do, these little

games are an expensive hobby. Did you ever think about upgrading to a S7 or

mB ?

Re. 5mx stylus holder - Your nail is too thick, will not go deep enough and

will not work. You need to try with a flat knife or a plastic thin card or

something like that.

Answer to: Bob

Re.: Windows XP - I use XP at home and XP Professional in the office and

Psiwin 2.3.3 works fine on both PC's. It might help you to play around with

the COMM ports, it could be COMM3 or COMM4 as well. Do you connect via a

serial lead ?   Just noted your 2nd message, definitely set it to COMM3.

Out of my head, do a right click on My Computer, look under properties,

device manager and click on the COMM ports, it should show you which COMM

port is set to the USB to serial adaptor.

mobilepro 800 for sale, running on wince2.11. Price - ?90

It may well make a difference. The first USB/serial cable I tried didn't

work. I then bought one through Clove which is working

well. You might try returning your cable and using another brand.

While the one that didn't work for me was a Belkin, I've seen posts here

and elsewhere that Belkin worked for others.

BTW, I've ordered a new PC and am desperately hoping PsiWin will work on it.

That is a good site!  They even produce versions for Windows Media Player

on Pocket PC that are 2% the size of the full version, and that would be

ideal for converting and playing on a netBook if only can find a suitable

How about letting us know where you bought the card and how much you paid

Subject: Re: Palmtop User; New Phone/ PDA

Hi folks...

To Itamar (> ):

I was thinking, as you seem to be, that I would not continue with my

subscription at last renewal date. However, I eventually decided that I

would, and now am very glad that I did.  Recently, for various reasons, I

decided that I would buy a new PDA: not as a replacement for, but as an

addition, to my Epoc devices. I settled, after some thought, on a Dell Axim

X3i Pocket PC, with Bluetooth and Wifi. After acquiring this, I found loads

of info in the back issues, to which I now constantly refer...

As for me personally, I chose not to go for the phone/ PDA combination.  I

use the Axim mainly for SMS texting (I had to purchase 3rd party software for

this), emails and internet/ WAP.  Using Bluetooth, my small T610 is in my

pocket, and I just need to have the PDA (it's neat enough) in my hand.

Recently I stayed in an hotel where there was free Wifi, and having the

internet in my hand was good fun: great for solving crosswords :-)  There

are occasions when I don't feel like having a PDA with me, but I always

like to have a small phone on my person. So I decided against the combination.

The downside to the Axim is of course the lack of a keyboard, but it's fine

for short messages. Also, IMHO Epoc software, such as Money for example, is

still tops. Any long emails - like this one <g> - are composed on my Psions

which I still use almost as much as ever.  If the Revo had a colour screen,

reliable battery and Bluetooth, it would be a dream!

Just a few thoughts in passing...

with Symbian software, and buy a full size keyboard with it (infrared or

bluetooth) to do any serious work. I will try and orientate myself on this

phone, but any remarks or opinions from others most welcome.

If you have your heart set on the P900 you may wish to know the P910 is due

to be released soon. Who knows, perhaps it is already out in the stores, I

haven't been out in civilisation for a while. The improvements are a

mixed-bag but some significant hardware upgrades like increased memory may

make this a worthwhile consideration. I am tempted myself. Just tempted

mind you.

As for the external keyboard I would strongly recommend going for a BT one,

and if it is not an absolute necessity just yet, you might want to wait a

while for more models to appear on the market. The P910 incidentally comes

with a thumb-board.

Actually, it does.

Not all USB-Serial adapters support all the Hardware handshake pins that

Psiwin needs.

Belkin adapters usually works.

I use a VERY lumpy 'no-name' model myself.

One I know which doesn't work is a Targus 'Two-in-one' parallell/serial

My S7 does this occasionally if I use the slider on the left - I think this

was documented as a design flaw some time ago now.  It's fine if I use

Fn-Esc instead.  Regarding the 5mx from Clove, are these brand new units or

reconditioned?

TO ALL:

Now that I've got my laptop at last, it has now taken over most of the

tasks that my S7 once did.  There are still a couple of areas where I find

EPOC much better and one of these is diary management.  I'm actually

thinking of returning to a 5mx for this as I find MS Calendar just a pain

in the butt. My own opinion is EPOC Agenda is far faster, easier to use and

almost as functional.  The biggest plus of all is of course the instant on

of EPOC and the pocketability of the 5mx.  I no longer need the size and

colour of the S7 so a new 5mx sounds rather appealing.  Regarding synching

with the laptop, well I simply don't want or need the hassle of

PsiWin.  The only thing I want to be able to do is print out my agenda to a

plain text file then transfer that over to the laptop.  I haven't tried

this yet but I'd guess it must be quite simple to do.  I'd love to be able

to just align the IR ports of a 5mx and the laptop and transfer it that way

- anyone know if this would be possible?  I've never used a Windows laptop

before so I'm still learning.  If not, I'd guess I could just pop it over

via my CF to USB card reader, but this would be less convenient.

Perhaps only the plug is loosely and the only thing you have to do is to

put it in the port again.

While disassembling your Psion you will perhaps find also a solution for

you pen. Does the pen fit completely in its "hole"? If not you should try

again to lift the under case at the serial port. (about 2 mm)
