Answers and another question to Itamar Engelsman, who asked in issue
#553:
>> Re.: TomTom CityMaps .sis - A remark and couple of questions. In the
last EPOC Tomtom Routeplanner there is the option "File" and "Show
maps".
This option will show for example on the French map which towns you have
on
your Psion as well by showing the area darker. Would this not take away
part of your reason for creating the overlay ? <<
I don't want to install huge numbers of city maps when I roam e.g.
France
(and there was the explanation for the late reply!). The maps clog the
Add/Remove Program feature. Instead, I bring the maps as .sis files and
install what I need where I am when I get there. The "Show Maps" is not
useful until you have installed the maps of course. I use the overlay to
figure out what map(s) to install.
>> As to my questions, for what version of the TomTom routeplanner is
this process possible ? Is this up to teh very latest versions ? Are
these
.SIS files not created for Symbian v.6 and higher and not for our Psions
or
are these the same ? <<
My procedure is for TomTom CityMaps, not RoutePlanner. I have CityMaps
3.0
(Build 204). I don't know about other versions. Should have said so,
thank
you for asking! The application is on the CD in versions for ER5/Eikon
(as
I have recently learnt to call it) as well as for the other platforms I
mentioned, including whatever is on Nokia 9210 (another EPOC platform).
>> And finally, do you think the maps are that significantly better
that
it is worth to purchase the program just for the maps (as the program we
cannot use on our Psions) ? <<
I used to have StreetPlanner, and the upgrade definitely was worth it,
because of the maps alone. In Denmark, StreetPlanner coverage was scarce
to
say the least.
But I've become confused by your recent statements about never versions
of
the maps being useful on our Psions. Do you refer to Navigator maps? If
so,
how can they be installed on a Psion?
One of the biggest drawbacks of CityMaps is that the maps are separate
(and
in large countries like France or Germany they come in the hundreds!) I
waste a lot of time converting maps (as described), figuring out what to
install etc. I would much prefer to have the whole set in one piece and
let
the computer figure out what is relevant to display. It could have maps
in
separate rectangles and choose automatically if that's most practical
for
the programmer, I don't care. I do care when I have to do the work. I
have
the feeling that Navigator does exactly this?

I don't know for sure, but I recall reading a discussion somewhere that
indicated that while there were no changes to the app, there were
worthwhile improvements to the mapping data. I did buy Citymaps on a
single CD that covered both GB and Europe, however I still have the
separate app for GB and the separate app for Europe installed!
I considered that the cost of a single app was more reasonable than
having
to pay twice for the same app previously.
> Is it worthwhile to spend the money to upgrade or not ?
Itamar only you can decide, but I consider that having the latest maps
available for a dead product is worth having even though out of date.
The problem is a typical EPOC problem. It's still the best available on
a
computer suitable for use in a portable situation. There are new
products.
but none as good at doing what can be done on a Psion.
I've just bought my third Garmin GPS, (8 years after the first) a 2610
which is very good; with a windows laptop. But it's not as good as my
eMap
and a Psion - 5mx or 7/nB, for what I consider basic GPS functions on
the move.

Daniele the first thing that comes to mind is that if you have deleted
files in windows, but they are still there. Windows probably marks a
byte
in the DOS directory to show a deleted file, as DOS did in the
past. However windows knows not to overwrite that data space on the
disk
until the trashcan is emptied.
EPOC does not know about windows trashcan, so reports the real space
available.
Having backed up the CF, then in windows empty the trashcan. Look at
the
disk space available in windows before and after to see if there was any
change.
I don't know if the above is correct, as I'm only using my DOS
experience
to come to this opinion.
I've not spent much time investigating windows as I did with DOS, apart
from how DOS handled long file names when used in windows or DOS
programs
like later versions of PKzip.

Please do that, as I'm quite sure, that you mix up voltage with current
here. As far as I know the current is calculated.
You can't calculate the voltage, because it depends of the battery. It
depends of the voltage of the battery without load (burden), the drawn
current and of the inner resistance of the battery. Your calculation
software has no information of the first and the last parameter. It is
not necessary to implement a voltmeter. It would be enough to use
parameters of the circuit which regulates the voltage of the mainboard
and
process these to get the voltage.
If it is this what you call calculate, then we don't differ. This would
be
a calculation with some measured parameters.

Restore via Psiwin2.3 does not work because the Mbook has another
identity.
You can copy the files on the PC from the 5mx-backup to the Mbook-backup
and then do the restore.

Just copy it to C:\System\Data.

I copied everything to the C in the Netbook, but I do not know how to
open
my contacts. Right now it is in C\backup\internal\system\data in
contacts.cdb.<<
Re
You could:
-in psiwin rename the backup directory and give it the name ofyour new
psion.
- restaure your C drive content from the PCbackudirectory to the sub
tree >it belongs to :
ie contacts.cdb file *must* resides in Internal (=C:\) \System\Data\
Make sure your system files are apparent (Menu\Preferences) -to launch
Contacts just press the "rolover" silkey beside the right border of the
screen; NB For any help press Fn+: HTH Jack

To Daniele Squarci,
I have experienced this also, where the free space indicated in the
Psion
is differing from within the PC. In most cases I find that the PC is
more
likely to be correct and that the Psion is reporting the space
incorrectly.
My only solution has been to copy all the files on the card to the PC,
format the card and then copy the files back again, then the Psion reads
free space correctly.

P DA,
Answer to: H.B.Folkerts
Re.: back up problems - Put the contacts file in \System\Data and it
will
work. Maybe it is a good idea to back up your existing file first by
renaming it to something like "contacts.bkp".

Re.: Sendo X - Thanks for the message. It also looks like a good phone

think I like the idea of a thumb-board that the 910 has got. But, first
I
have to decide whether or not to go that route.

Re.: New phone / PDA - Thanks for the answer, as always interesting.
You >are right, the real "serious work" I will continue to do on my
mBook
as well as the PC at home/work. With "serious work" for the smartphone I
meant the input of agenda details, updating data files, writing short
notes
during meetings with my photography clients, keeping photos on the
machine,
writing occasional SMS messages and emails. At the moment I basically
have
got 3 machines, the mBook, the Palm and my phone. The advantage of
buying a
combined phone/PDA is that I will have only 2 left. As said before, I am
unhappy about my Palm basically because it is not really multi tasking
and
also the lack of a keyboard. The 910 addresses this somewhat with a
thumbboard, interesting development. I did not yet look at the XDA,
which
has the advantage that most route planner programs will work on it as
well
as various downloads for these programs. As to my phone contract, there
is
no hurry in replacing it as in the UK you can continue to use the phone
without renewing the contract and cancel it at any time when you want
after
the end of the contract.
Having said this all, when on holiday it would be nice to just thave the
phone with me, download my work email and send some answers to my office
with instructions. I'll take my time deciding.
