I've been playing around with PdbRead, but haven't found just which formats will work. I've gone to Memoware and downloaded some files, but when I try to open them, I either get a message that Pdb will 'try' to open it, in which case I get garbage, or it opens blank.

Can anyone tell me just which file formats will work correctly?

Response to Larch in re using RFM:

I wonder if the "small process" that you refer to in the documentation for RFM110 is what later versions of RCOM install on the Psion at setup. The Psion 3a included this firmware in the "soap on a rope" linking cable. So try installing RCOM with your Psion connected, then try RFM again. Does your link setting on the Psion reflect that it is on and set for 19.2 kb? I'll look at the documentation with you again if you don't have success.

I'm being offered the choice between a Sony Ericsson T610 (which I currently have on loan), a Motorola V600 and a Panasonic GD87 (?) as payment for a job I've done. There are no other gadgets on offer and I would not be looking to replace my trusty T39m if I hadn't got this offer.

Maybe I wasn't clear. What I need to do is use the phone as a modem for my Psions, not send and receive e-mails on the actual phone. I also want to use PhoneMan on my Psions to read and write SMS messages and send them via the phone and I need to be able to beam contacts back and forth between the Psion and phone.

I know all this works with the Sony Ericsson T610 just like it did with my T39m, but I so far have not received any information on whether it'll work with the Motorola or Panasonic or what the modem settings would be for these phoness. If everything works with the V600, I would prefer this phone to the T610 because the camera in the T610 is so pathetic.

The Panasonic does have a better camera than the T610, but it doesn't have BlueTooth and I'm unsure whether I would forego BlueTooth for a better camera.

I make my living as a photographer and know you can't expect miracles from a camera phone, but when the resolution of the camera is 288x352 pixels, I would expect it to be capable of taking a sharp and relatively well exposed 288x352 pixel image. Most of the images from the T610 are unsharp and often overexposed.

One of the many reasons a camera phone would be useful is that with my very limited Spanish I often find myself struggling to explain what I want when I'm looking for parts for the boat etc. It often helps to take a snap with a digital camera and bring the camera along to show the offending item on the screen. As I always have my phone with me, it would be useful to be able to use the phone for this. Unfortunately, the camera in the T610 is so shitty, it can't even do this as half the time nobody is able to recognise what I've taken a photo of!

Subject: RE: Mobipocket 4.8 problems

Hi folks,

I have been a Mobipocket user since it came out many years ago.  I have had all the upgrades including the latest 4.8.  This is the first one that I having trouble with.  I have it on my PC and my Psions as usual.  I go to update the News channels and I can't find where to do it.  You used to go to Mobipocket on your PC and add, delete, or change your news selections.  It tells you on this one to go to the search box on the Web Companion and make the changes.  Everytime I try to click the search box, it won't hook up to the internet and so that I can get to the mail.  This is different then I used to do---It just gives me the screen that you get if you try to call up a web page and you are not on line---Can't view this screen or whatever it says.  Has anyone else had the problem or am I doing something wrong on my end????  I really like Mobipocket and feel kind of lost with out it.  By the way I have Windowsxp on my Laptop.  Oh, and by the way to one of the other subjects--I also have a T610 and love it.  It works great on its own and is great as a modem for my Psions.  I understand that they have now come out with a firmware upgrade from 3.1 to 3.3, but from what I am told, you have send your phone off for the upgrade and of course you loose all your settings.  Not sure if its worth doing or not--anyone know of the already great performance is better making it worth while doing it???

Thanks,

Bob

A bit like support from Psion Teklogix then. In my experience our

beloved Psion has always been a poor performer when it comes to

support. I recently got in touch with them by email to try to get a bit

of support for my EPOC netBook. Basically, the little plastic catch

that releases the lid is broken and occasionally falls out in transit.

When I suggested to PT that it would be great if they could just send a

catch out to me (in exchange for the required £ of course) it seemed

like the company was trying to write Psion operating systems out of

history.

"This is a support Email address for Psion Teklogix products only" --

up to this point I had though that the original netBook was a PT

product and had even had them carry out repairs in the past at great

expense.

"can you tell me what model of netBook Pro you are running?"

"Teklogix does not produce any netBooks running EPOC, our netBook Pro

runs Win CE so you need to contact Psion PLC." -- How soon they forget!

Anyway it was finally agreed that a repair might be possible but that I

would have to complete the required paperwork, send large amounts of £

and could require up to three weeks. To add insult to injury it was

suggested that it might be easier going to Psion PLC as the netBook and

Series7 are practically the same product.

I have had a number of Psion products repaired over the years and it

has always been a case of getting the run-around before a department

would finally take responsibility and repair could be organised. My

catch is still falling out and will do for the remaining life of my

netBook (basically as soon as the Palm Cobalt handhelds arrive).

Ciao Owen,

>>>Well, that phone has now been sold and I have the choice between a Sony Ericsson T610 and a Motorola V600. I've got the Ericsson on load, but I'm a bit disappointed in the performance of the camera. I know you can't expect too much from a camera phone, but this is below my expectations.

Any  comments on the useability of the Sony Ericsson T610 VS the Motorola V600 with EPOC would be welcome. My main needs are e-mailing and sending and receiving SMS via PhoneMan. It would also be useful to be able to transfer photos to and from the phone from the Psion.<<<

As to the phone, I am currently using the SE T68i, which can be considered the precedessor of the T610. The experience is quite positive despite some sudden autoreset episodes (only partly solved with an upgrade when the phone was still under warranty). Another issue of this phone seems to be the joystick, which can break or not respond to the touch. Mine was even soldered by the SE official repair centre in Milan. No more faults after this fix.

Connections with Phoneman work great too. As to the T610, I am sending this email in cc to Lewis Barton - PsionPlace member under the Lewis Nickname -  as well as Epoc Digest Subscriber for a few months now. Lewis can surely give you more details about his experience with the T610 (there were quite a few similarities with mine).

As to the photo capabilities, I do share your opinion. That's why I personally chose to buy a real digital camera, instead. But of course this is a really personal choice and involves one's needs, usage etc...

FYI, I bought a Canon A80 last november after viewing very positive users' reports on a website called "digital review" AFAIRC.

I ended up with buying it from an italian on-line vendor called www.digitalfoto.it (currently on vacation, as most of the italians ;-) ) who has got a good reputation among both the semi-professional and amateurish scene here in Milan, as well as quite competitive prices.

The choice of the A80 was also due to the fact that it uses CF, so that I can send pictures directly from my nB. That's exactly what happened when I was in HK for business. In fact I could send home some pictures directly via the wi-fi network in the hotel I used to stay.

I am very happy about this purchase and - surprisingly enough - it turned myself into an amateur photographer !

Hope that this helps!

Cheers

Several years ago we (Digital Progress) made some additions to the

standard netBook toolbar including the possibility of toggling the toolbar between left side and right side on the screen. This was done for a client in a few specific applications which required operating with left hand.

Recently, however, we did some adjustments to make it compatible with Andrew's

Toolbar Patcher and with Robin Hood's MoonClock. We also made it freeware.

It is described in

www.dp.com.my/dpNotes.htm#dpNote0017

and downloadable at www.dp.com.my [downloads]

dpToolbar version 1.11 now includes an external battery indicator and compliance with

German OS (i.e. Ctrl+Shift+R in lieu of Ctrl+Shift+P for battery status).

Answer to Chris S Handley

>So the P800 uses exactly the same Contacts database file-format as EPOC?  That's very useful to know!  I thought >only MBM was unchanged.<

I would think that as for the Condact.cdb, it uses the Unicode version of the same format, hence incompatible at database level. However, when doing bulk beaming from P800/P900-UIQ to Contacts in ER5-Eikon, it first seems to convert to vCard format (VCF) and then send.

The method is slightly different depending on model. On a P800 you will need to open Contact, and under the File menu pane you will see something like 'Send Entire Folder'. On a P900 you will need to first go to Contact Manager, then check Select All and then press Send and select Infrared. The ER5 machine will need to have Contacts open and do an Infrared Receive from there.

Sorry for lack of clarity, but you *will* need plBeam when sending *from* ER5 to UIQ but not the other way around using the aforementioned method.

From ER5 you have to open Contacts. Then select More-Export Contact under the File pane. Select AllContactsInView and make sure filename ends with .vcf. You will now have all entries in vCard format.

You will now need to beam it over to P800, P900 via plBeam. Now, UIQ will automatically identify this file as a vCard file and open the View-Save prompt.

The other way - which I have also done - is to get a MemoryStick-PC-Card adapter and move it physically. Not as neat though and does not work on Revo.

>Are there no Contact compatibility problems at all?

I have noticed a problem on occasion that telephone numbers stored as fixed line end up as mobile numbers on P800/P900.

Future plans:

I have some ideas to write OPL routines on both UIQ and ER5 to facilitate using ER5 machines as Contacts managers for Symbian mobile phones, and thereby also fix a few bugs.

Subject: Zipmanager

Hi Folks,

Larch, you have a problem uninstalling Zipmanager.

I imagine from what you've said that you might have to do it manually. It's quite simple - just delete the system/apps/zipmanager directories on all drives. If you can't see the system directory in the System screen, go down to the root (no (Close) directory): if you can't see it there go to Menu | Tools | Preferences and tick the appropriate box and the system directory will be visible on all drives.

It seems odd that you don't have the option of removing it through the "Add/Remove" Control Panel as the SIS file should install a small uninstall file in the System | Install directory (on the C drive on my 5mx) which is where the "Add/Remove" Control Panel looks for it.

Having said this I should say that I no longer use the "Add/Remove" facility as it has removed files needed by other programs. As it is easy to do it manually that's how I do it!

It seems you also have a comms problem.

If I remember rightly the Remote File Manager is a DOS program. I used RCOM, another DOS program, as well with my 3a. One of these programs, perhaps both, needs the Psion's Remote Link enabled *and* set to the same baud rate as the PC - much lower than the 5mx standard speed.

Happy days,

Phil.
