Hi all,

As you may have noticed The Digest #609 was sent via my personal email account instead of the Digest account. It was because of an error when I modified the settings and when I discovered the error the Digest were already sent out. Please accept my apologies.

Anyone else miss issue 608 of the digest?

I had a long delay following issue 607 then issue 609 arrived but not from the usual address. I wondered if Spamache had blacklisted some profanity in response to Rolf or a reference to Proporta, but this wasn't the case.

Hi all,
I haven't recieved a digest all week and it sounds like I wasn't the only one, when one finally arrived today it was from a new sender.

Itamar I'm glad you've ordered a p910 I'm positive it will do what you require and I gather the screen is absolutely gorgeous.

I'm slowly adjusting to my p800 now, am back with the eZitap predictive text system and am getting on okay.

I've recieved an email from eXpansys today to say they've mailed me a replacement stowaway keyboard, the reason I ordered the bluetooth model is that it was only £45!!! half what everyone else is charging, but I think they have noticed now and added £20-£30 to their asking price.

eXpansys is like my toy shop I'm always browsing their website for future purchases and have found them very efficient.

Regards,
Mike Dyer.

I've been using the little impregnated wipes that you can get for cleaning glasses (of the spectacles kind that is!) for a while now, and they work very well. As far as I can tell, they are not doing any harm...

In #609, I explained about my blank Diamond Mako (as quoted below).  In the interim, I tried a soft reset, which restored the screen, but I found that all the data has been wiped out, as though I had done a hard reset instead.  Meanwhile, I had to reinstall W98 on the desktop to which I had backed up the Mako.  Now that I have it back, I had to reinstall EPOC Connect -- and the archive files for the last backup are still on the desktop, but when I try to restore to the Mako, it doesn't have access to those files and wants to identify the machine as a new machine.  How can I get the backup data, which are in a file named M#2, into a location where they'll be available to EPOC Connect?   They are currently stored in a folder at

C:\EPOC\Melvin#2\Backup\Internal\Documents,
whereas the actual connection and backup and restore programs  are at :

         C:\Program Files\Symbian\EPOC Connect
Isn't there some way to get the two to communicate?

Simon,

not all printers these days have USB, maybe those in the "low cost now, pay even more later" class.

look for a compatible printer on
http://www.actisys.com/compatibility.html#Printers
funny they include the HP 6MP on the list that already has IrDA on board.

Else you could look for a new printer with built in IrDA (not sure if still on the feature list of new printers) or buy a new USB-IrDA
adaptor. Maybe also used HP MP6 B/W Laser Jets are available over ebay. A very reliable printer for me over years for both Mac and Psion 5mx, never used the parallel port though... ;-)

Subject: Stowaway Bluetooth Keyboard

Hi all,
my replacement bluetooth stowaway keyboard has just arrived today from eXpansys.

This one works just fine as you can see  :o)

It's funny but when an electronic gadget doesn't work I tend to assume it's down to my ignorance but it wasn't in this case, thankfully expansys were brilliant about it.

The advantage of a bluetooth keyboard over infrared red Itamar is you don't need the two units tethered to each other.

I'm typing this with the p800 on a coffee table and the stowawaybluetooth keyboard on my lap.

You just switch on bluetooth on the phone if it is not on already, turn on the keyboard application, open the keyboard and you're away! they re-pair immediately and you can even control application menus from the keyboard.

Suddenly, thankfully, doing serious work is possible on the p800.

Mike Dyer

Subject: new FastBackup released

I am pleased to announce the fifth release of FastBackup, 5 months after the last release, and almost exactly one year after it was originally released!

You can get it from:
http://www.freepoc.org/viewapp.php?id=45

Here is a quick summary of the changes:

* Up to 10 times faster, thanks to using the AldurFile OPX. It should now be as fast as any commercial or shareware equivalent written in C++.

* Numerous little usability improvements, which should help beginners and even experienced users. And the documentation is better.

* Rewritten Profiles dialog, so that it is much more flexible.

* Additional functionality, without compromising simplicity, such as Log files, and the ability to backup multiple profiles using the standard macro.

* Extended existing functionality, such as allowing a much longer Contents list, and the Skipping of multiple folders.

* Simple example GUI provided, for those programmers intimidated by FastBackup's existing GUI code. Make your own FastBackup GUI with ease!

Simon Jeffree finds that new printers don't have parallel inputs - are you sure?
My relatively new HP Deskjet 5650 has USB and a parallel socket.
You can connect the 5mx to a PC via a USB cable - won't that work for the printer also?   It may not be IrDA, but it's easy enough to plug the cable plugged into the printer each time you print ... ?

Wolfgang you are not the only one with this problem.  I get the Digest sent to two e-mail addresses and 608 was missing from both.

Melvin I just put my mouth very close to the screen and say, 'Arrrrrrrrr'.  Then use a Kleenex to gently clean the screen, plus a few more 'Arrrrrrrrr's for the larger screens.

It's worked on all my 8 Psions from 3a/512 to nB.

Steve, I'm a Psion man through and through (use 3mx, 5mx, 7 & nB) and have used one with a GPS for over 8 years (3a/AutoRoute/Mapper3a and Garmin 75).  However my 3rd Garmin, a 2610, has gone USB and to download my track was very simple.  Just switch-on Psion, download and switch-off.

Now I need a laptop that is still booting after I've switched-off the Psion!

I have however heard of the Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX 720.  It's getting closer to a Psion than any other micro screen tablet - but still no k'brd.

It has a 480 x 640 screen, that can be rotated portrait to landscape, but diagonal size still only 3/4 that of a Revo.  It uses Type II CF + 802.11b WLAN + Bluetooth.

It also has a built-in USB Host, so might be able to solve my GPS connection problem.

Others in this, 609,  Digest may have an interest (see their postings) as a USB k'brd and a GPRS card can both be plugged in for e-mails on 640 x 480.

Have you noticed all the double barrel names appearing.  I'm looking for Sony Psion, but fear that I'll never see it.

Have you considered a Laser printer?
At least some of HP's lasers still have an IRDa interface built-in.
And some of them even have parallell ports.

Unless it states that it's good for LCD screens, don't use it.

Personally, I use a Danish product from AM, 'Screen Cleaning, anti-run gel'
It's a gel-like liquid you spray on and wipe off. It's expensive, but a bottle will last you for years. We use the same stuff on both LCD and CRT's in the office.
www.am-denmark.com is mentioned on the bottle. Maybe they list resellers somewhere.

Here's what I do, which applies to all the Psions that I have owned, which has left me a fairly scratch-free screen after years of use:

After opening the Psion, I often wipe the screen with the fabric of my shirt arm.  I do this gently, but with enough force to remove any large peices of grit.  Then I wipe the end of the stylus, just in case. Finally I use the stylus normally.  If I feel anything start to grind under the stylus (probably a long time after I last cleaned the screen), then I immediately wipe the screen & stylus again.

I have never had any big scratches from doing this, and although it gradually accumulates small scratches, the screen seems to be "self healing" for these scratches:  If I take a soft cloth, gently wipe any large pieces of grit (as before), and then clean harder and more persistently, the scratches seem to disappear - leaving me with a brand-new looking screen!  The cloth I use was designed for cleaning CDs, but does not contain any liquid.

I have never needed to use any special cleaning liquids, and suspect that they would mearly leaves drying marks on the screen...

Owen,
There are a lot of good things out there that can be used on Java-enabeld S-E phones and I have also started to do more and more things on my IMHO most competent T610. Reqwireless (www.reqwireless.com) in Canada has produced WebViewer and EmailViewer. I am not sure if they have a wap interface, but you can download it OTA from Handango UK directly to your phone when in an Internet café. At the Handango website you can find a lot of nice stuff, personal productivity sw, tiny  database sw, notetaking sw and more. You are welcome to mail me off Digest if you have more questions.

I think there are quite a few psion users out there who are discovering they can't register some of the software.

Perhaps one of the psion web sites could detail a list of software that's we have an interest in no longer able to be registered...or even software where there is now a free registry code...such as mbmview, invasion and ebook.
Are there any others with freed reg codes ?

Hi,
I am really sorry to say, but the easiest way to solve the problem is getting rid of your external infra eye. Buy a printer with built-in IrDA port (it is a cheap add-on) and connect it via USB to the PC. Just make sure the infra port is easily "visible" on your desktop lest you should hold the Psion in an awkward position.
