If I don't remember too wrongly, you have to write in your name EXACTLY as you wrote it on the registration form as the code is partly a checksum of your name. Capitalisation will make a difference...

No it wasn't...
On the MC Word version(commercial software) the 'save as .RTF' was included.
On the S3/S3a it was not included in the built-in Word app, even though it was the same program, ported to a new UI. The Dyl files came with the RCom(commercial) package and you had to install them manually. When Psiwin came(first versions was a commercial package) it was automated, and are still in there, even on the latest V2.33 build.
(I know, it installed them when I connected my old S3a to the PC...)
Why the .RTF conversion wasn't included on the S3/S3a one can only guess...
Maybe it was lack of space in the ROM, they didn't think people needed it unless they had the link cable, or they were just ornery nobody knows...

That is correct.

Actually, I believe it really IS their property...
Incidentally, M$ word 6.0 is the program least compliant to the .RTF definition as it writes many of the codes with capital letters, even though the definition says no capitalisation is to be used.
(Found the specs on www.wotsit.com a couple of years ago. )

BTW: Any Norwegian readers out there?
There are 3 2MB Workabout MX machines for sale on QXL.no and the bidding starts at only 280 NKr (about £25) which is a steal for brand new, never been used machines!
(They come without docking cradles or cables, but as they have regular RS232 connectors there's no problem hooking them up to a PC)

Subject: netBook Pro
Chris S Handley mentioned a Business Case draft PDF for netBook Pro Symbian OS. This reminded me of a question I have about the nB pro.
I've used my Psions as far back as my original 3a for mapping and GPS apps. However all new software is on other OSs.
To use the best available GPS mapping software requires a Windows PC. One feature of these programs is the ability to transfer maps to Palm or Windows PDAs.
The major problem with PDAs is their small screens. So would a nB pro work with these transferred maps and a GPSr?

Subject: P910 - Handy Expense
As part of the toolset I purchased came the program Handy Expense which I used on my trip of the last 3 days (writing on the plane back home). It will register you expenses made during a trip according to several criteria :
- Category : there are a lot of preset categories like breakfast, taxis, tolls, lunch, mileage, parking, etc. You can also edit these categories and add new ones.
- Currency : it will allow you to work with 5 different currencies which you can edit as well and enter the rates. You can also choose which currency is the "home" currency.
- Payment type: You can choose whether you paid cash, by check, by credit card or prepaid, and edit, change or delete these.
- Type: finally you choose whether the expense is a business one, personal deductable ot personal non-deductable.
Up until here it all sounds good. The entry of the expenses is easy enough and at the bottom there is an icon "NEW" so you don't have to activate the menu each time.
So I entered 10 or so expensesfor a total of almost Gbp 140.-. And now ? I don't know how to get these to the PC as you cannot print from the phone. Looking at the HELP file when synchronising the phone it will copy the expense files Expense.ind and Expense.dat in the folder \Program Files\Epocware\Handy Expense on the PC. The HELP file however does not describe what you do next with these files on the PC to use the data to print them or enter them into a report. I'll report back on that when I found out how to do this.

Answer to: Mike Dyer
Re.: UIQ Stuff - Yes, I do have 'power afe' enabled after 5 minutes. I just changed it from the clock to blank, maybe that will make a difference ? How do you charge it in the car, just with a charger or do you have a cradle for it in the car ? Is there a good car cradle for this phone ? As the BMW bluetooth system will not read the phone book of the P910, I nee to have the phone at hand to choose numbers on the phone itself.
Interestingly enough I also have GPRS problems. I can download email on my P910 without problems now but I can't use it as a modem for using GPRS from my mBook. I noticed that the P910 has an extra setting called "address" where I had to enter the word "internet" for Vodaphone, but my mBook does not have this option. Maybe it is time for SmtpAuth ?

Re.: battery life of P910i - Well, the second time I gave you an idea for ana rticle <BG>. I also try and keep most programs off. It is an interesting idea to set it to Flightmode in the evening when I don't use the phone. I'll try that one out as well. During the day at work I put it in the cradle so during the week I don't have much problem, it is more in the week-end when I notice it goind down quite rapidly.

Re.: P910 synchr. - Once you have set the synchronisation settings on your PC the acutal synchronisation process is indeed very easy, just like with the Palm. However, I don't use it much as I don't use the agenda on my PC and don't synchronise the Outlook address much. We have a lare database of business addresses on the PC which I copy to a .csv file and than import as a database onto my P910. Now _IF_ someone would write a program to allow for multiple Contacts files just like "Contact loader" on the EPOC machines, that would be an interesting program. Any takers ? I know you can sort addresses in different "folders" like "Personal" and "Business" etc., but I would prefer not to have them all in one large file. It would also moean that with synchronisation all my personal addresses will appear in the business one on the PC, shared by other users as well <G>.

Subject: Subject: Neuon Registrations
Hallo Kim,
If I am not wrong, the registration code is mostly generated from entries, that you sent to Neuon with your reg.protocol (for example your name, machine ID,... and so on).
Such names must be the same like those that you use in your Psion when you type the reg.code in.
Have you still any printed copy of your reg. protocol? Havent you changed the name in your Psion in the meantime?

Dear Rolf,
IE<< Ringtones I understand, but I am not as "internet wise" as some others and search the internet that much. I liked very much the oldfashioned ring tone on my T610. Can I copy that to my P910 ? How ?
>>
RB>>I doubt it because the P910 uses sound files (WAV, AIF and MP3) as well as MIDI files for its ringtones. In other words, industry standard formats. While most mobile phone manufacturers use their own format/notation for their standard (polyphonic) ringtones. When you're very fond of your T610 ringtone it might be a good idea to record it (PC, sound card and microphone), to turn the recording into a WAV or
MP3 file and to transfer the resulting file to the P910.
Just to clarify, the ringtones in the SE T610 *is* in the MIDI format. I have transferred a few (ok, several) MIDI files from my Windows PC to my phone and each has worked quite nicely. Lacking a P900 myself but assuming what you wrote about the P900 above in regards to ringtone formats is true, Itamar should be able to transfer his ringtones directly from his T610 to his P900.
To Itamar Engelsman:
Dear Itamar,
I think another digestee has covered this in sufficient detail; you should be able to 'beam' your ringtones from your T610 to the P900 quite easily. Simply go to the My Sounds folder and select the ringtone you wish to transfer, select More and Select Send. The options thereafter should be self-explanatory. If you have the opportunity to try this out, do share your experiences with the rest of us. BTW, thanks to all who shared their experiences with their new Symbian devices, despite numerous reviews on the Web and in print, there are scant few from the viewpoints of veteran Psionistas.
Kind regards,
Koi Hin

Hi all,
Itamar do you not have the 'Old Fashioned' ringtone for your posh p910i? It is my favourite tone (no imagination) on my p800. I could email you it - 'oldfashioned.wav' if you wish.
I *still* believe your old ringtones will be supported, UIQ phones to not just support computer sound formats they also support industry standard ringtones:
iMelody
AU
RMF
AMR
and others,
as well as
MP3
WAV
MIDI

Subject: RE: Digest Archive
Great idea with the arrows to switch between different archived digests!
Why not place bort arrows at the top instead, one pointing left (backward, to previous Digest) and one point right (forward, to next Digest). At present, you have to scroll all the way to the bottom to reach the "next" arrow. Or, two sets of arrows, with arrows pointing left+right at top+bottom?

Subject: p910 various,
Answer to: Rolf Brunsting
Re.: p910 various -
Moving of numbers from phone to phone - Thanks, so I did it the wrong way. Too bad, I solved my problems by changing it all by hand, but god to know for future references and for if I have to do this again (you never know).
Using Contacts - I suppose the way I work is still a habit from my usage of the EPOC Psion's where I have the email addresses in Contacts but all other details in databases as these are that much easier to share between different platforms. I understand your point very well and I suppose one of these days I will have to switch and put it all in the Contacts on my phone. The main problem is that it will take a lot of time to do the synchronising and than go over the contacts file and edit each entry to put it in the right folder and edit the contents.
Voice command - I think you are right that the T610 does it more efficiently, also because one needs to remember less commands. On the P910 I will need to remember two commands for each contact, home and work (and mobile), while with the T610 only the name as "home" and "work" are the same for all. But we don't have the choice.
Ring tones - In the meantime I found that Sony-Ericsson have most ringtones of each phone on their website for free downloading and I found the Oldphone ringtone under the T610 list.
Tasks - When using the Handy-Day program instead of the calendar the tasks are shown in the day view anyhow and somewhat different than with Calendar. I don't want to see the to-do's _before_ the due date, but I would like to see them _after_ the due date _if_ I did not yet take care of it for one reason or another. Handy-Day gives me just that, so I am happy with that program.

RTF is better for typical word-processor documents. HTML is intended for documents that will be displayed on an endless page (a computer screen) rather than printed on fixed size sheets of paper.

On a Psion, it's a major hassle to receive HTML-only e-mails, particularly if you don't have a web browser installed along with a macro to save the e-mail as HTML and open it in the browser. Unfortunately, HTML only now seems to be the default setting in some web based e-mail clients like Hotmail with no way (???) of changing the setting to plain text.
For WindoZe (and Mac?) users, there is also the possibility that a HTML attachment might contain a Java script which could start "doing things" on the computer or even a link to a web site which would make the computer connect to the net in order to open the page. On a WindoZe machine I would be very sceptical to HTML attachments. On a Psion they are only an inconvenience.
I normally ignore HTML attachments. I just assume they are the usual repetition of the text in the plain text format version of the e-mail. Sadly, that is the default setting in many (M$) e-mail programs and I don't enjoy having to pay GSM charges to receive the same text twice. If someone actually sent me something useful in an HTML attachment, I would probably miss it unless it was mentioned in the plain text body of the e-mail.
Interestingly, the only e-mails I've ever received where HTML has been conciously used to format the text rather than just sending HTML because it's the default setting are spam messages typically advertising porn sites or viagra. (At the moment I'm single and would be more interested in some anti-viagra...) Thankfully, I no longer receive spam after I changed my e-mail address a couple of years ago and have managed to keep it off the www and therefore out of the claws of the spambots.

Subject: The Psion Personality of the Year 2004 Nominees
Dear All,
The nominations are now closed for The Psion Personality of the Year 2004, and the nominees are:
The Digest Team
The Digest Team is responsible for The Epoc Digest - or now called simply The Digest.
A team of hard working chaps who distribute a regular Psion/Symbian email to over 700 subscribers. The Digest is free and more info can be found at;
http://www.psioneering.co.uk/digest.html
Martin Guthrie
One of the EPOC platform most prolific software authors, most (or maybe all) of Martin's excellent software is freeware. Martin is a key mover in FreEpoc and a regular contributor to FoxPop. Martin also has is own very regularly updated website packed with info about EPOC. Whilst many of EPOC software authors have lost their nerve and fled, Martin has stayed loyal to EPOC. Martin's website can be found at;
http://www.pscience5.net//www.pscience5.net/
Julie Campbell
Julie is one of EPOC's unsung heroes - or should I say heroines. Julie can be found hosting EPOC Chat, moderating Psion Place and generally making the Psion world a happier place with friendly and informed chat and advice. www.psionplace.com
www.epocchat.com
Thomas Schmidt
"Thomas was one of the most important Persons for setting up "Psionwelt.de" Germanys biggest Portal around Psion, EPOC and everything related."
Again, an individual who through hardwork and commitment has helped keep the Psion World alive!

Kevin Millican
"I would like to nominate Kevin Millican for this award, not just for his excellent EPOC software, but for his loyalty to the platform, and
continued willingness to support users and help them maximise the
usefulness of his applications."
Little more can be added - Kevin is, like Martin, one of the corner stones of the Psion Community.

Boris Cornet
Many involved with Psions stay with the latest version of the Operating System - Boris however can be seen as a guardian of legacy Psion devices - the curator in the Retro-Psion museum!
Without Boris we would of lost a massive chapter in the history of Psion. Investigate http://members.surfeu.at/org2/ for more info.
Christoph Pulster
"I nominee myself :-) Me is Christoph Pulster, owner of the last Psion
shop remaining on earth www.pulster.de
please combinate the award with the Nobel prize :) "
Hmmm, not too sure if nominating yourself is allowed.
However what Christoph says is about right, visit www.pulster.de for more info.
Voting is easy, go to http://www.psioncomputer.com/personality.htm and click on the name of your candidate.
The Award is ready and, has to be said, could give The Oscar a run for it's money!
All I need now is your vote!

Subject: Port occupation by PsiWin
Hi all,
after I had used PsiWin (Psion S5mx - RS 232 - COM1 - laptop with XP home) and closed PsiWin at the laptop, the COM1-port is nevertheless occupied, so that I cannot run any other program using the COM port.
I think, this is the result of slovenly programming by PSION.
Can anyone give me any hints, how I can arrange the port to be free (without new booting!)
Thanks in advance for any proposals

Answer to: Melvin Woody
Re.: Digest Archive - AFAIK the new function is that _within_ digests you can now click on a subject line at the top and straight jump to that message, and jump back again to the top to choose a different subject instead of scrolling through all the messages. At the moment this is only possible on the digests stored on the website.
The archive file of subjects from all the subjects of all digests comes from my Psion where I keep a running index file which I periodically pass on to be stored on the website.

Re.: Agile Messenger - Where do you download this from ? I noticed that these programs started to pop up to use GPRS for SMS messages. However, I don't send that many SMS's (yet), so I would not save much, but still nice to try out and certainly cheaper when traveling in Europe.
