Having written that, I thought "oh hell, a toolbar can't be that hard to add", and so added one to TubeRoute :-) . Although it was more fiddly than I had hoped!
That'll be in the next bleeding edge release, which might be in a few days...

With respect to transferring your Psion data to UIQ, see this
http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36604
I used to have a P800 for a while, and did some transfering from my MC218
to it. I've documented it in that link.
Hope it helps

Subject: Various Ramblings.
Hi all,
thanks Itamar for your reply about the sms counter, I'm always researching my future potential purchases!.
Talking of which, the Nokia 7710,
team it up with a Stowaway Bluetooth Keyboard and SORTED!!!
I just wish Nokia would put a vibrate alert on this and the 9300 don't they realise some people sometimes work in noisy environments or need a discreet alert.
and as for 'Palmtop', I still like it but hate the smaller font / reduced page count, and the loss of a spine in the binding. However I shall keep subscribing.
Incidentally 'Mailwasher' flagged up the digest as probable Spam for the first time ever, weird.
I'd never criticise anyone for continuing to use an old palmtop, heck this Libretto I'm typing on is 7 years old now, yet has *full* Office 2000 compatibility, because it's running Office 2000 :o) , can browse *any* website, handle HTML emails, secure connnections etc.
All it needs is a diet to be as light as a Netbook and 8 hours battery life and it would be perfect!.
Best Wishes,
Mike Dyer

Gentlemen. Please can someone explain why my netBook (Version 1.05(450) English (UK) - ASCII (Release 158)) every now and then looses its accuracy of the touch screen. I have to recalibrate the screen with my pen for it to work properly again (a real bore when in the sheet program). All batteries seem fine (even the backup). Any ideas?

Subject: Nokia 7710
Hi all,
I was just thinking about Itamar's thoughts on the useability of the Nokia 7710 'as a phone'
For me the beauty of the Sony Ericsson 'p' series is that there is NO compromise. When the flip is closed the phone is no different than any other mobile phone.
The big breakthrough for me was the purchase of my 'Stowaway' bluetooth keyboard.
I'm sat here in my car (parked)!, with the p800 in the car holder and the keyboard on my lap, comfortably typing this email. I very much doubt that it will be possible to touch type on the new communicators.

Re.: Nokia's - In principle I agree with you that it will take quite some time for this platform to mature to the extend that EPOC did. It is also clear in my mind that sooner or later we will all have to migrate to one platform or another. If let's say your 5MX will stop functioning or "falls over board" you will have to look for something else or revert to the paper diary. I think at least we should orientate ourselves and keep our minds open, although I have done one step further and started to use the P910 (by the way, maybe because they were a week late or maybe due to a mistake, Vodaphone did not charge me for the phone, I got it for free <!>). I will not go into details, but several of the programs you mentioned do exist already on the new platform(s).

Subject: Handy Day 2004/2005
I have not done this in the past, but I am truly p.ssed off with Epocware and their customer service department in .... Russia.
I bought Hand Tools 2004 on 13th October 2004 which included Handy Day 2004, a program I reviewed a few digests ago extensively. On their website it states clearly in the upgrade policy that "furthermore, we provide free upgrades to a major release to all purchasers of the product within 1 month of a purchase". Clear language ? To me yes, to them no.
Recently they introduced Handy Day 2005 and I got an email that I can get it at a discounted price of Usd 15.- instead of Usd 29.95. I tried to contact them to support service by email several times but did not get an answer. Looking at the website it gave me a phone number in Germany and in Russia. I phoned Germany where they told me to phone their service office in Moscow. So I spent 10 minutes on the phone to Russia to explain a sweet girl that I should get the upgrade for free and she agreed with me in the end and told me I would receive all details by email. So far so good ?
I received the email stating that their was a misunderstanding, that this was a totally new program and that I was not entitled to a free upgrade. Now I got angry and wrote an email back that their website clearly states differently, that they cannot claim that "Handy Day 2004" is a totally different product from "Handy Day 2005" and that I am the editor of this digest and would report back to the digest about them (here I am). My suggestion was to check this with the management.
So I got this extremely unkind and rude message back from the "Chief of Marketing" (wow, they have got a lot to learn about marketing !!) in which he states that :
- It is a new program because "the name is different" (the year only).
- It was only one application, now it is a PRODUCT LINE of two different applications He compared it with "SlovoEd" which was first one dictionary and than expanded into several more dictionaries under the same name.
- told me rudely to leave the making of their policy about upgrades to them
- it is new because the application was designed and developed from the beginning. NO any functionality or any parts of source code of old Handy Day 2004 is transfered to Handy Day 2005. They have a smilir task, but can run both at the same time on the P910
- Several new features like weather forecast, plug-in structure, skins were never announces like features of Handy Day 2004.
I told them it is clear that 2005 is the next version to 2004 to which he answered : "Why do you know for sure, did you develop Handy Day by your own ?" Finally, in answer to my claim that their website (www.epocware.com/compay/upgrade.html) clearly states that major upgrades are free within one month from purchase his answer was "thesis of one of friends of mine is that everybody would always like everythin for free. So what ?"
In light of the above I can only give a recommendation NOT to purchase from Epocware.com or Paragon GmbH as you will not get ANY after sales service and will NOT be able to speak to anyone or get any answers without phonecalls to Russia.
I think I will see my money spent on this program as lost and look elsewhere for the same functionallity.

I didn't think YOU were trying to censor me. I WAS being censored by a computer with a badly implemented spam blocker and that was what I was unhappy about. I suppose I might have guessed that this particular word could get caught in a spam blocker, but it just didn't occurr to me. I know that a word like sh*t will also get caugt by some SPAM blockers and to me this is a perfectly valid word to describe what you sometimes get under your shoe if you walk where a dog has been. I've got a friend called Dick. Where will it end?
Badly implemented SPAM blockers cause a lot of problems and I don't accept that we should all have to pussyfoot around them. If people accept that the problem is in the Spam blocker rather than a perfectly normal e-mail, then maybe the pressure will be on the ISP's to improve their software rather than on users to play a guessing game as to which words are OK or not.
Another typical situation is when someone sends me an e-mail, I reply and I'm not on their whitelist, so I get a message to click on a link to confirm I'm a real person. By the time I can get to an Internet café to click on that link, the message has long since expired.
As I said before, with SPAM as with just about everything else, prevention is better than cure.
Owen

Subject: Psion backups
I have always wondered this and it happens on all the Psions that I have had. I will perform a backup which I usually do about once a week. Usually it takes a few minutes. Sometimes like now, it tells me it will take 248 minutes. Does anyone know why every once in awhile it does what looks like a complete fresh backup. I have not done any kind of reset at all during that time.
Thanks,
Bob

It would probably have been better for Steve to say "They *can potentially* do everything ..." .

I *was* going to agree with you(!), but the Nokia 92x0 (which the 9500 is compatible with) has been around for several years, and so has accumulated quite a bit of software. It still won't have an equivalent for every piece of EPOC software, but I bet there's a good chance of there being one.
I don't know about the compatbility with the Nokia 7110, so potentially there might not be much software for it. But it is worth remembering that many people found the Psion's built-in software so comprehensive that they never neveded to think about getting any software...

Will most probably be available on the 9500. It certainly is on the 92x0.

Not likely to be needed, since I understand that Symbian Word & Sheet can do a reasonable job of importing/exporting their Microsoft equivalents. The 9500 is apparently much much better at this than the old 92x0.

It wouldn't be hard to make a spreadsheet to do the job, although it might not be quite so good at it.
<snip>
> However, I assume that even when the Nokias become available
> in volume, they will not be cheap
What I don't understand is why the Nokia 9300 will *apparently* be only 10 percent cheaper than the 9500, for the contract-less price, despite loosing both WiFi & the camera. With such a small price difference, I'd probably be quite keen on getting the 9500!
N.B. I found this out from the same web site that reviewed the 7710, which someone posted about on the Digest recently. The quoted price for the 9500 was 500 pounds, and for the 9300 it was 450 pounds.

At 1,09 they seem to be of no use at all, but at 1,22 (this is when my Olympus digital camera tells me they are ampty) or so can I still use them in the Psion? In a Maglite? For how long? Is there a "compleat guide to batteries usage" out there?
