Subj: p910 email program:
Itamar,
go into the control panel to your email account settings, click the 'inbox' tab, then where there is a box marked 'download', it *is* actually a
drop-down menu with the option to download headers only.
There is actually another email program out, perhaps from Lonely Cat
Games?, you'd need to check out allaboutsymbian or my-symbian.com to find
it, I haven't bothered because since installing Symbianware's 'Message
Storer' I have no quarrel with the built in program.
Subj: Sony Clie:
Hmm off topic?
I don't know, is 'The Digest' epoc/symbian only or can we talk about any handheld computers?.
Anyway, being a bit of a geek and curious about other operating systems
I've just purchased a mint Sony Clie SL-10 off eBay for the princely sum of ?31!. This pda runs Palm OS4, has a high resolution 360x360 16 grey scale display with backlight, and runs off two ordinary AAA batteries.
I sorted out my windows address book after getting into a muddle when I
bought the p800 and it was exported to the Clie in only a couple of clicks which was impressive, the accompanying 'Palm Desktop' program is useful,
rather like 'Outlook' I suppose you can enter all your appointments and
tasks and then 'Hotsync' them onto the Clie.
Talking of 'Hotsyncing' the Clie came with a program called 'Documents To
Go', wow what a revelation after the pile of .... that is 'QuickOffice' for the p800. I spent an hour experimenting, sending Word documents and Excel
files back and forth between my pc and the Clie, formatting is retained and astonishingly (for me at any rate) any changes on either the Clie or Pc versions of the Microsoft Office document are immediately reflected in the other when the Clie is next synchronised.
I've previously been looking at the new communicators as a 'possible' for
next time although I cannot buy a phone without a vibrate alert as I
sometimes work in a very noisy environment, Nokia are idiots for not
fitting one to the 9300.
I'm looking at ten by fourteen visible columns on a work related
spreadsheet on the Clie in Documents To Go, with freeze titles and decent options any former Psion user would expect and thinking what a desirable
device a Treo 650 would be.
And I never thought I would say that.

Welcome Danny
Excellent advice from Will, Palmtop magazine is a must have. I myself
ordered all back issues from #13 to present, and now I can't seem to ever
be without my Psion, so much so that I even have a brand new spare on the shelf (screen failure stuff, your'e learn)

There are so many individual German cities that I had to use different
sheets for almost every letter of the alphabet in order to get them into a single Excel file. Then created an Excel file of only the "master" cities (some 247 of them!) and laboriously entered the latitude/longitude for
each. From this file I created a .txt file to be used with MakeOver.
These are the steps in MakeOver I followed using a that .txt file.
Input file:
Name, Folder, and Drive - where the txt file is on the Psion.
Format: Deg-Min-Decimal (the lat/long was in decimal form).
Order: Latitude first
Output file:
Name, Folder, and Drive - in the RouteOvl folder.
Format: Overlay 5dp (don't know what that means or whether I should have
used Overlay 4dp).
Order: Latitude first.
N/S E/W: Signed (don't know what that means).
The .txt file of the German "master" cities is 9K, the created .ovr is 5K.
I don't know if that's significant or not.
I put the .ovr file into the RouteOvl\Germany folder into which I copied
the .mbm file which is used in the UK overlay (TomTom hands).
Now here's the strange part. When I open Germany in Route and then
open the overlay, only 2 cities appear, each with the old Palmtop
icon, a little man, not the hands from the UK's .mbm file.
So what has happened to the other 245 cities and the hands icon?
For Alan Morris - I used the MakeOver app. DOS is Greek to me. :-)
BTW, I'm still working on getting Excel files of 1) alphabetic city lists
and 2)a list of "master" cities for each country on the CityMaps CDs. So
far I have them for Germany and Italy (in addition to the UK work David
Steer did). If somebody else is already working on this project, let me
know - it's one hell of a job and I don't want to be doing duplicate work.
Sorry to be so long winded, but I wanted to explain exactly what I did.

Subject: Vulcan Flipstart
Hi all,
This is my firs post to the Digest. I first dipped my toe in the PDA waters with an Osaris, which soon had me wanting more so I scored a 5MX real cheap
and I love it (except for the IT people at work refusing to support Psion
and me not being able to sync there as a result. But we all have to make sacrifices don't we ;-)).
Anyway, my eye was caught by the Vulcan Flipstart. It's an XP computer, roughly the same size as the 5mx, and it features a 1024*600 screen (no touch-screen though), 1 GHz processor, 256 Mb ram, 20 GB harddisk, Wifi,
USB, optional Bluetooth etc. Although it's not out yet and when it will, it will be ridiculously expensive ($1500+), it might be the ticket for folks wanting something in the 5mx-type form, which you could run both your
Windows apps and the Epoc emulator on....

Subject: Cheap personality module
Chris,

I have a much cheaper alternative: Take the Netbook personality module out
of your faulty Netbook, and and install it in your working Series 7! (costs about ?0 ;)<<
That's ok, as long as your personality module is not the part of your
netbook that's gone wrong. I wanted to get one while they're still
available, but you cheap solution is certainly worth bearing in mind. My
main reason for buying one now was that I wanted to know if my S7 would
drive my wifi card, giving me peace of mind should my netbook ever decide
to die on me.
Your tips about how to go about upgrading are definitely useful. I have
read accounts of people upgrading their S7/netbook memory without removing
the batteries, which is a decidedly risky way of going about things. Nice
if it works, expensive if it doesn't.
Cheers, Ian.

Subject: PdbRead (HebRead)
Dr. Shane McKee developed some time ago on my request a program for EPOC
that allows the user to read .PDB files in general and Hebrew texts in this format in particular. PDB files are files created to be read on the Palm machines. In light of the wide usage of the Palm platform there are
numerous of these PDB files to be found on the various websites, amongst
them Hebrew texts of prayer books, Old Testament and many others. Dr. McKee unfortunately stopped using his 5MX when it died on him and is now the
happy user of a PocketPC one. As he furthermore meanwhile had 2 children as well he is not interested in continueing this program or to convert it to
the Symbian platform.
I sent him an email recently and asked him if I could get the source files form him to see whether it is possible to convert the program and he
happily agreed and sent me the files with the only request to be kept up to date what happened with them. So, now I am the "keeper" of these files but
.... I am not a programmer and would not know what to do with these.
So here is my request. Is there amongst the subscribers of this digest a programmer who would be willing to receive the files and have a look at
what would need to be done to convert this program to Symbian and whether
it would be a huge job or only a little one ? Of course my interest is the Hebrew texts in particular but I believe there will be a large number of potential users for such a program on the Symbian phones. I know that the program for EPOC works on a 5MX, a REVO as well as my mBook (where I have
it installed and working flawlessly) so the different screen sizes should
in theory not be too much of a problem. The moving up and down is done
either with the shift - up or down key or by taps on the top or bottom half
of the screen, also not that much of a problem.
Is there someone that is interested in looking at this program ? I suggest anyone interested sends me a personal email to "itaddress truncated

Subject: Getting the dialling prefix function to work
I've entered my phonecard details into the relevant fields of the
'Dialling' control panel and tweaked whatever I thought necessary -
including the format of the stored phone numbers themselves - but I still can't coax my Revo to precede the phone number with these details when
dialling via the inbuilt speaker. Can anybody reveal what the secret is to achieving this? (And before anyone smugly murmurs something about Revos, my acquaintance couldn't manage it on his 5mx either when we tried, so
there. ;-/p> )
Tip o' the Month:
Have you ever wanted to easily select whole words on your EPOC m/c with the stylus, just
like you do with a double-click at your PC? Well - in the majority of situations - you can!
Just use the Control key when selecting, and enjoy the convenience. If
you've got the
'StickyKeys' utility running, it adds to the convenience even more, because the Control key
is still considered pressed down after selecting is finished, so you can
then just press 'C', 'V'
or 'X' etc. to copy, paste, and so on.

Re.: Psion 5mx access to Internet - You don't write how you connect to the internet, but _if_ it is via a mobile phone, it could be that it is not the Psion that disconnects you but the phone.
