Hi folks,
today we got 8 bounced digests with reasons "Message rejected for policy reasons (pharma ban)" or "content is not acceptable here" or "V...ra is not wanted here" (I replaced the letters "i", "a" "g" with dots).
Please do not more put such words in your distributions.
With best regards

Subject: Revo batteries
I was astounded to find that my battey read-out was at zero percent when it had been reading in the mid sixties a few moments earlier.
I put the Revo in its cradle and after taking a long time to get from zero into the black and then a few minutes to get to ten percent, it suddenly jumped back to the sixties.
This would imply that the readout is wrong. What's the best thing to do? Leave it in the cradle to roast? Or accept that the seventy percent charge is really twenty percent and recharge regularly?
I have always had battery problems with the Revo - and these latest batteries come from a German replacement that I had done when the memory was bumped up. Somebody on this list said something about putting the Revo in the fridge. I wonder if my problems can have something to do with the hot and humid tropical climate here.

Owen,
>> There are rumours that they may also get addresses from guesstimating what e-mail addresses people will use when getting a new domain name, but I find this highly unlikely.<<
This is more than just a rumour. I bought a domain (chapple.name) a few months ago, and within days was receiving a lot of highly specific spam (how would I like to make my *new* website more visible etc.). I challenged the UK Internet provider from whom I'd bought my domain, and they replied that spammers often monitor domain registration lists, and target the owners of newly registered domains. This would appear to be borne out by the fact that I get spam, whilst my wife and children do not. The address to which spam is addressed is one that has not been used for any lists, newsgroups or registrations.
Cheers, Ian.

For Owen Morgan:
Many thanks for your time spent elaborating on literal interpretations of the words 'meta' and 'digest'.
Just out interest, if you perform the same exercise on the terms 'metadata' and 'metathought' what conclusions do you reach?
:)
Kind regards

Why do you say they are flawed? The Brightscore method is to set up "Spam Attractor" email destinations, ie addresses which are no-one's
real address and so any email received there is automatically spam. Then all other emails with the same content must be spam and can be safely ignored.
I can see no flaw in that.

Subject: AntiSpam!
Hi Folks,
Chris. (Handley), my experience of Yahoo is different. I have had a Yahoo account for 3 years and had no spam either to it or because of it. I am a member of nearly 30 Yahoo groups so I need a Yahoo account but both my eAddress and that of a charity I help (a Yahoo account too) are clean. I really doubt Yahoo sell eAddresses and I think they try very hard to keep their operation as clean as possible.
But you have put your finger on one problem - list administrators. If they do not control the publishing of eAddresses then those eAddresses *will* be spammed. The Digest administration do an excellent job this way but many others don't.
I don't know how spammers get some eAddresses but they get a lot from ordinary NGs and websites with eAddresses on them. Although I get no spam right now (fingers crossed) I did at my previous ISP. That was because I posted to a couple of NGs using my real eAddress, something I never do now.
But as I've now got a website I can do several things to deter spammers - and my eAddress isn't on my website except as a graphic. I've got a page, over 600 KB, filled with spurious eAddresses and links to other pages of false eAddresses as well as links to scripts - like the Perl script I've got that generates temporary pages of eAddresses for the spamBots (Psioneering are linked to that script at it's home - www.monkeys.com).
These strategies *must* work as they give the spamBots exactly what they want (and the Perl script must hide it's address and name from them).
The idea is that the spammer sends spam to all these false eAddresses, thousands of them, and they are all returned! Even if the spammer can automate deleting these returns it will take a v-e-r-y long time as the returns will keep coming in. And the spammers ISP/mail provider just might notice too.
If anyone wants to use my strategies they're at http://www.philaypee.co.uk/antispam.html, along with links to free sites that can generate encrypted eAddress links that work. The one I use is very robust and generates it's code using two user-selectable prime numbers, à la PGP.
But Alan (Morris) is right about discovery of the leak being fairly pointless. The spammers concerned already have that eAddress - the best thing is to drop that eAddress if you can.
Happy Hogmanay,
Phil.

Subject: C******d eMail & Spam
Hi Folks,
Antony (Booth), you said "The TFTD topic was definitely censored." and then you said "I can tell you for a fact the admin did censor the discussion. I received an email asking me to desist from further contributions to the topic, so it would not get any further out of hand, even though I would be subject to further personal attacks. It was also made clear that some abusive emails from some digest members had been omitted from the digest. If that's not censorship, I don't know what is? I personally am not in favour of censorship, but as I have been recently reminded; this is not a democracy, so my contributions as well as every other members, is at the discretion of the admin.".
Did the admin. actually censor the Digest? If all they did was ask you to desist then surely that's not censorship, though it may be regrettable. Do you know whose eMails were omitted?
As I think you know, I don't condone personal attacks - I think they're stupid. Argument, particularly logical argument, works much better.
And I also know you don't condone censorship, you're actually nearly as anti-censorship as I am!.
You also say that an eAddress you posted from was subsequently spammed but it was *only* published in the Digest. That's sad and maybe someone let that Digest or that eAddress out - but I've not heard of anyone else suffering this way so I doubt your unfortunate incident is typical. But it is very unfortunate.
Having said that, I'm sure the admin. will try to plug any such hole. We all despise spam and spammers.
Happy Hogmanay,
Phil.

Subject: Dumbing Down & Criteria
Hi Folks,
Itamar, all I meant about "Dumbing Down" is that it's silly to take out facilities that are already there - and I still think it is!
The question "How do you differentiate between "personal attacks" and honest, if strong, disagreement?" was not really about the current methods used now but about what criteria would be applied under a censorship régime.
Happy Hogmanay,
Phil.

Subject: SYMBIAN as 5mx replacement?

anymore, where can we go". The answer is : SYMBIAN >with either Nokia 9500 /
9300 or a S60/80 or UIQ model.
Itamar,
The above quote is not mine. It was in Gary Reyes' response to my earlier
posting. But I COULD have asked the same question. The SYMBIAN machines
unfortunately do not seem to meet my needs. I do not like/need the phone-PDA
combination (I am not even sure I could use those here in Canada), but I do
definitely need a decent keyboard, since much of my use of a PDA involves
writing. Buy the way, at the risk of sounding ignorant - what exactly is the
now-so-much-talked-about 'UIQ model'?
Thanks and greetings

Re.: Grab / Copy Text - Am I missing something here ? Can't you just use copy and paste to move text between programs ?
Answer to: Antony Booth
Re.: Various stuff - No, not right, I just skip the TFTD's totally, don't look at them, don't read them. I don't see the problem with that, sorry. I can categorilly state that the digest CANNOT be the source of an email address reaching a spammer. The website does not show ANY email addresses whatsoever and the digest is sent to the subscribers only while the database is held out of sight on the Psion of the operator. Furthermore, all subscribers do know the rules that 2 email addresses can be subscribed, one as the main address and one as the second address to send messages from without receiving the digest in the second email address. However, each subscriber can subscribe as many first email addresses as required and receive the digest to each email address. Each such address can be programmed to show only a name and not the email address itself. Now, why would these points need a different digest set-up ?
You write "I personally see no need to include peoples email addresses" and that is your opinion. However, who says that others agree with this ? I for one like my email address to be known to other subscribers.
Now yes, indeed, the discussion of TFTD's did get out of hand and unfortunately needed the intervention of the team. I think that was the only occasion of the digest being "censored" and to continue to throw this at our feet I think is somewhat unfair. I don't think we censored anything else since and it was quite some time ago. I am very sorry if you were upset by this happening and we did what was in our subjective minds the best way to stop the digest from deteriorating into personal attacks.

Subject: P900 newbie questions, John Boyce / JBSoft, leave the digest,
Answer to: Lewis Barton
Re.: P900 newbie questions - Welcome to the world of P900/910. Unfortunately I cannot help you much with the SMS functions. The few SMS's I send I write directly on the P910. However, to get to the infrared or bluetooth with the flip closed you can do as follows, still somewhat cumbersome i agree :
- unlock
- press menu button and choose applications (#)
- press 9 for connections and choose the connection you want to activate.
I tried to send a SMS with Phoneman but I did not succeed either. Hopefully someone can shine some light on this matter.
Answer to: Martin Guthrie
Re.: John Boyce / JBSoft - That is great news indeed. I will contact John and suggest to add his name to our little digest as he might have some positive input to make as in the past. Nicole, thanks very much, it was JBCis that John wrote.
