Subject: MESSAGE FROM THE DIGEST TEAM

Dear Subscribers,

We have made a thorough investigation of what happened with the "spam" message "Hello" that was recently sent to the digest subscribers. With the help of Chris Handly the message was traced to Howard Weissman. We asked him about this matter and part of his reply reads as follows :

Quote ...

Normally, my Psion remains my possesion at all times. Unfortunately, it wasn't for a period of time, and had fallen into a couple of youngsters.

Unfortunately, to my detriment a message _was_ generated in Email. I normally will allow the program to open and transmit outgoing email while I am dressing, and therefore did not check to verify the outgoing messages. The slufootnyc address is one I use for a gamers' forum, and messages were properly sent to the specific addresses I use for that purpose.

Upon further investigation, it was in response to # 667, which had the addresses in the cc: field, not hidden as normally received.

... and further ...

I will offer, to all concerned, my sincere apologies for the oversight in not verifying all outgoing messages prior to sending. If it is neccessary, in TheDigest Team's opinion, to remove me from the list, do so. If the website remains, I will be able to follow the threads without creating additional mayhem.

... unquote

I would like to comment further that Howard has been a longstanding subscriber of the digest who I personally know still from the times of the Compuserve Psion forum and the ups5 digest. Furthermore what happened was only possible due to a mistake made by the digest team that sent out a digest with the BCC field showing. Lastly, Chris remembers that the Psion email program will take away the sender's email address from a list of addresses when replying to an email sent to multiple recipients, which is the reason Howard's address was not in the list of the outgoing message.

After discussing the matter with Chris Handly and Rolf Vonau we are all 3 of the opinion that to remove Howard from the digest is not the correct way to act. We suggest therefore to accept his apology to the digest and to be happy that it was "only" some youngsters sending an email and not SPAM after all.

Finally Chris advises all who have the risk of their Psions falling in other hands to install the program "Locker" so the password screen will reappear after a period of inactivity.

Our thanks go out to our Sherlock Holmes, Chris Handly, for solving this mystery.

Best regards,

Itamar Engelsman

If you put a pin in one hole you do a soft reset. Put a pin in both holes and you do a hard reset.

Hi Steve,
as I already said, PsiWin was very slovenly programmed by Psion.
During the deinstallation normally all entries in the registry have to be deleted. But I found after the deinstallation more than 100 !!! entries in the registry, beeing not removed.
I would propose you, that you open the registry (in Windows XP by RegEdit.exe) and look for the searchwords "Psion" and "Epoc". Among others there are a lot of entries with "DLL", which you should delete.

Since you ask, there are several reasons:

1.  I started this macro in 2001 ("since years" also;), because I couldn't find any good solution.  If ReplyEveryMail was already available at that time, then either it wasn't in English, or I didn't like the look of it (see next point).

2.  To be honest, I didn't like ReplyEveryMail's interface; it's way too complex/confusing, for what should be a simple job, *IMHO*.  I think the author (Rolf V) has also expressed dissatisfaction with how the interface has grown over time, too - although maybe he's improved it by now.  Of course, my macro has it's down side - no interface at all!  Some of the configuration is by modifying constants in the source code... :-)

3.  I *had* stopped developing Email_Reply one year ago, precisely BECAUSE ReplyEveryMail was brought to my attention then.  However, it seems that Andrew Flegg wasn't happy with any of the existing alternatives, and so modified my open source macro to his liking.  I was then sufficiently interested to develop his features further, and add one or two more of my own, while I was at it.  BTW, I reserve the right to develop my macro further, for fun, should I wish a break from programming (say) TubeRoute!

And don't forget QuoteMyMail from www.mypsion.ru , which has a nice interface, but few features.  So Psion users have a choice of 3 methods for indenting email - each with it's own way of solving the problem (REM is a Swiss Army Knife style app, E_R is a simple open-source macro, and QMM is a simple closed-source app).  Pretty good for a "dead" platform!

Chris Handley

Hi there,
You're going to have to remove any references to PsiWin from your Registry - as long as you've got Administrator rights you should be OK, otherwise you'll have to speak nicely to your Network people.  You'll probably have to log on as Administrator on that PC to do the work.
All the best,
      Kate!!

Answer to: Chris C.

Re.: Series 5 - The question is more, what can you _not_ do with it ?  You can use it as a diary, emailing, web browsing, databases, banking program, accounting program, dictionaries, road maps, games, etc. etc.  The S5 is however slower than the 5MX and has less internal memory. A Cf card of 128 Mb should however give you ample space to explore the machine to your wishes.

Re.: Connecting to an XP - It appears to be different for different PC's. I have used a Belkin USB adaptor with great success, never had a problem with it <G><sigh>.     As to COMM ports, could you try and redirect the program occupying COM1 to a different port and tyr Psiwin on COM1 ?  I think a laptop in general has got only 1 serial connector and that is COM1.

A quick note to affirm what has already been mentioned, that Just because you havn't recieved sp*m doesn't mean you have not been spammed. For those of us who use ISPs or are using corporate email (ie many of us), there is a fair chance that there is some Sp*m protection that we are not aware of.  Some ISPs do make it clear - others do not and many corporate email systems have put in some protection.

Is there no-one who is prepared in due course to have a look at this program and see if it could be translated to a Symbian program ?    This program is not only to read hebrew texts, it can be used to read _ANY_ text that was prepared in the .pdb format of the Palm PDA's, and there are files for just about anything and everything you can think of due to the large user base of these machines.

At this moment I am only looking for someone to have a look at the source files and give an opinion.  Any reaction to my email address please. [I have full permission from the original author of the program who kindly enough sent me all the source files].

Owen, have you checked whether there's partition on this card? As I've had quite a few times problems with CF card when the partition disappeared. After creating partition (using Win :) - everything worked fine.

Subject: CityMap Overlays for RoutePlanner

I have completed the production of overlays for the following RoutePlanner countries: Austria; Benelux; France; Germany; Italy; Scandanavia-Denmark; Spain-Portugal; and Switzerland. They have been sent to Martin Guthrie and he has put them on his site:
http://www.pscience5.net/

In each package you'll find the overlay files showing where all the "master" CityMaps maps are located - those maps whose .sis files can be extracted from the TomTom CityMaps CD. There are also Excel and Sheet files giving an alphabetic listing of all cities available and which "master" CityMaps .sis file will show that city.

David Steer's files for the UK were put on Martin's site previously.
