Subject: Using EDUs
Dear All
Just downloaded Essential Disk Utilities from Martin Guthrie's site. I
would welcome any suggestions to cure an apparent problem with my 5mx.
Both checkdisk and defrag work well in relation to 2 separate CF
disks. However, the software, when pointed at the internal, C, drive,
reports an error saying it cannot operate on the target disk while another
programme has a document open upon it.
Other than the EDU software and the System, I cannot find any other open
program or doc.
I uninstalled EDU and installed onto a CF disk, just in case it was
interference with itself. Again, no problem on the CF disk, even though
that is where the software now resides, but the same error on attempting to
access the internal drive. Furthermore, after my attempts, I found that
the system would no longer recognise the existence of documents showing as
on the C drive. A soft reset cured that problem, but not the original one.
Grateful for your thoughts. Do I need to do a hard reset to clear the 5mx,
or is there a glitch in the copy of the software I have taken, or is this
normal?
Kind regards to all

I can commend www.svp.co.uk for CF cards.
See
http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/Digital_Media_.html
They have 1Gb under ?50 (E71). Alternatively www.7dayshop.com have a
pound or two more last time I saw.
I doubt if fast cards are worth bothering with on Psion hardware.
I regularly purchase them for my photographic work.

Subject: eMail Indenting
Hi Folks,
Chris., your macro works as you say it should.
But I want a macro that *deletes* the text that isn't highlighted as well
as indenting the text which is. Your macro doesn't do this (and is not
meant to).
I'm trying - slowly - to write a macro to do this and more (not based on
yours) but I thought you might see value in the idea.
Happy days,
Phil.

Thank you for your comments. You are right and that is why I decided to look
at the 9500. As I did so I became aware that: (1) for certain functions the
Palm is at least as good as the 9500 and in some cases I find it even
better; (2) even though I have three devices I do not use them all at the
same time. So while the 9500 could have replaced the phone and the Palm (but
never my notebook) it would have required some trade-offs that would not
have made sense for me.
Looking back, I am very glad I gave the 9500 a try, but even more glad that
I decided not to make the change. I went through a similar experience some
time ago when I tried out a PocketPC.

Joseph

Subject: New Technology.
Why, Oh Why. Is it that new Technology takes 2 steps forward and 1 step back?
I have both the new Nokia 9500 & Sony Ericsson P910i
The P910i is incapable of sending faxes, I have a Copy of SendFax but can
not get it to work, but even if I could it has no provision to attach a
word doc or picture. & the Nokia 9500 is unable to sync emails sent from
the Phone with sent emails on the PC. Other than that both items are quite
superb!! But these are the two things I require. So its back to my
faithful 9210i and another wait for the next latest gadget to arrive.
So I now have a Brand new boxed Nokia 9500, complete with 1Gb MMC Stereo
headphones (for MP3) Leather case. Latest firmware 4.5
And a Sony Ericsson P910i again fully boxed. Complete with 2 x 32Mb memory
sticks. Registered software. Includes Tracker, Solved dictionary, Mini
GPS. I also have a DVD with hundreds of programmes & ring tones
Please email if you are interested, before they go on Ebay.

Subject: Also a 1 Go card
Hello everybody,
First a big thanks to Ulrich Hornstein for his experiments with a 1 Go
card. I just bought one from Kingston.
I immediately popped it in and was pleased with the speed.
But... then I wrote a file on it with my USB card reader. :-(
The result was a weird file with a size of 6118.9 Mo. Checkdisk (from EDU)
advised me to format it.
So I did, with the standard Psion function.
I also have SmartFormat, by the way, because it is part of the EDU suite.
The result:
6575 files in 804 subdirectories
Size of the files: 233,519,258 bytes
Size on disk: 322,064 ko.
*glup*
That's approximately 100 Mo bye-bye !
I do not know the formatting parameters of a standard Psion format, but I
notice that the creation of a file of 1 ko indeed takes 32 ko, so I guess
we have the same settings.
The same 1 ko file takes only 4 ko on my old 128 Mo card.
I find this 100 Mo waste quite severe and I would like to experiment with
it. However... putting Psion CF's in Window$ machines seems to be a good
way to damage the CF.
I am now considering how to actually transfer my files.
Yours sincerely,
Thomas VAN DER ZIJDEN

Subject: In search of (rare) software?
Greetings fellow Psionistas!
Having had invaluable assistance in the past with software from other
Digest contributors in the past may I thank you for that help. Also to all
contributors to the Pscience5 page: what a fantastic resource!
Last year I bought a Siemens text-reading pen which 'reads' and then
transfers typed text to PC or laptop via serial cable. I seem to recall
that originally the pen could be used to transfer data to a Psion (either
s5 or 5mx) via a null modem dongle & cable or similar, and appropriate
software. I think Clove were the distributors, but their product range has
moved on a bit since then ;-)
Does anybody know where (or if?) this software and dongle/cable are still
available?
Many thanks in expectation
Kim Smith
