Subject: ¿reupdating Collin's dictionary to v1.5
Hi! real plain vanilla Psioners5,
I had to reinstall Collins bilingual dictionnaries fron the original CD
All went well except for the German-French one
ie its v1.4 installs OK but my bigfg15.sis (who earlier used to work) is this time, unable to upgrade the installed v1.4 to v1.5 (Kernell Error when launching the dictionary)!!!
Thanks in advance to the good psionist around here who would help? (may be by sending his working bigfg15.sis)?
PS TomTom has "abandoned" the psionist clients and all abandonWare should be enlived
somewhere else on the Net ;-)

Thanks for taking the time to post your P910 experiences - I would say they closely mirror mine.
Some points:
*Filemanager - have you used SMAN's? Iike you I never use the supplied one.
*Card reader - Don't like the sound of this. I'm planning to get a 1gb card at some stage and worried I may have problems getting a card reader to work with it. *Keyboard: To access all special characters on screen, just enter a "l" in the number area (starting at the bottom) & then put in your char. Now even less reason to use the keyboard!

Re ABP
I did this recently for a friend migrating from a 5 to a 9300. In theory - and according to ABP's author Malcolm Bryant - the files should be compatable (or just require being run through a convertor - can't remember), but I couldn't get this to work. Instead I exported & then imported using the QIF file format. I then just had to do some extra setups - such as Standing Orders - to get up & running again.
BTW, I use JABP on my P910 & it works very well.

Alan, I am amazed at your skills in getting at least a very slow connection rate, albeit much too slow to be of any use.
My experience with the infamous Belkin USB to serial is:
It is unfair to say that Belkin USB to serial does not work. It does, if you accept that its only apparent purpose is that of crippling a USB port, which turns into a perfectly useless serial and no longer recognise USB. <<
Franco,
FWIW, I'm using a Sitecom USB to serial adapter without any problems. The model number is CN-116.

Sorry, there's no netBook patch.... Of course, if someone were to cross my palm with silver, I could be persuaded to recompile it with a different speed setting. but it's not trivial. And I'd bet you'd want all the graphics the right size and in colour, too! 8-)

Subject: *** SPAM *** Leaving Revo plugged in all the time?
Rather than risk inevitable data loss due to dead batteries when I'm away on trips, I though I might just leave the Revo plugged in while I'm gone.
Are there any known risks to leaving the Revo plugged in around the clock, or can one safely leave the Revo on mains power for an indefinite period?
Thanks for any feedback,
Peter

I refer to my posting in Digest #705 to which there has been no

Is it possible that no one know how to do this ?

Answer to: Ian Chapple
Re.: Impressions of UIQ - Thanks for the long message, appreciated. I have got mine now close to 6 months and my conclusions are not that far off from yours. The stylus is too small, but I can't be bothered to walk around with spare ones and use it anyhow. I use the thumbboard manily for telephone numbers where it works much faster than handwriting. SMan does give you a list of all open programs from where you can jump to any of these programs. I have also got Handy Day and Handy Desktop (came free) whcih will give you additional shortcuts to program to enter other programs. The Calendar functions are enhanced by Handy Day to a level almost as good as the Psion. It will show you for example your appointments and Tasks in the same screen. There are several other file managers around that work better. With Profimail came a free program called Profiexplorer which is a good one. Bluetooth is great indeed, although my BMW bluetooth program cannot handle the programs anymore and will not show the contacts. In the end I did get my cardreader to work with the adaptor for the card. It is a Belkin and will work at home but not in the office. Anyhow I try to keep all the DATA on the internal disk like I do with the Psions. There is a lot more freeware around than you think, check it out at for example www.my-symbian.com. I have on my P910 : Several Hebrew files, Contacts Control 2.0, Countdown SJ, DTMFdialer, Fastconverter, jZip, MetrO, MobileOthello, Niknakkpatience, PStopwatch, SMan, Sokoban, Solun, submarine, ZCheckers amongst others.

Subject: PsiWin et al.
Hi Folks,
Jim (Watson-Gove), for over 3 years until now I haven't had a PC so PsiWin wasn't an option.
On a PC alternatives to PsiWin are the various SIBO utilities (including the SIBO emulators) and an ordinary comms program. The 5/5mx emulator would work but the emulator *cannot* see the connected Psion (and vice versa).
On other machines an ordinary comms program will work and the Java Psion Link will usually run and has some convertors. MCLink works on Macs and I think there are other dedicated programs for different platforms. But for all you need the right leads.
Having said all that some of these options are not easy, certainly not as easy as I recently found PsiWin to be. Using an ordinary comms program may mean zipping/unzipping directories and may be rather time consuming and confusing.
If PsiWin suits you (mostly it suits me) then use it - it seems pretty simple and stable.
But I would rarely use the PsiWin convertors (I haven't yet). nConvert suits me better when I need file format conversion.
Happy days,
Phil.

<I am no expert on wifi but this is how I set it up on my 9500.
For Web:
I found it best to manually set up the access point before going to Web and Messenger.
go to control panel - connections - wireless LAN, then select - networks - highlight your wifi router - create access point.
The tricky part if the router is WEP enabled is to enter the correct password. On my office one, I just enter my 5 digit password, like 12345. However, on the home Linksys router, i entered my 5 digit password but no websites came up on Web. I then entered the KEY1 10 digit password (generated by the router software) and it worked fine. There was no error message so I only figured it out by trial and error.
Go back to control panel - connections - internet setup - highlight your wifi router and make it 1st priority.>
Thanks for the info Dick. My 9500 can certainly see my network but I've no idea what the 10 digit password is as the laptop was set up for Wi-Fi by an engineer when I first bought it. Is there any way I can see my own password on my XP enabled laptop so I can then enter this data into the 9500? I don't really want to go to the hassle of setting up a new known password on the laptop unless I really have to.

Hi Brian,
why you are looking for the version 1.0?
You can download the version 2.00 from Neuon: http://www.neuon.com/apps/nightkeys/nightkeys-series5-series5mx-mc218-sis.zip
BTW: Google found for me 183 sites with "psion" and "nightkeys".

Franco Cozzani <address truncated> wrote:-

When computer communications don't at first work, a major cause is synchronisation. Signals sent need to be synchronised at the receiver. When data is sent serially each bit follows the one before, and if the length of each bit is too fast or too slow, (or too short or too long) then the error builds up at the end of all the bits. The first bit or two will be received with later ones missing their 'window' of time, hence data becomes corrupted.
If the desired working high speed fails, then step by step reduction of the speed may eventually work. This is if all the other requirements are correct.
I eventually discovered a combination of settings - but at slow speed - would work. Increasing the speed then caused failure.
It is my opinion that Belkin either had a bad design or a faulty batch of a single component. This caused the timing to be wrong in a large percentage of their products.
As we now live in a society, where faulty products are now acceptable to a very large number of folk, then Belkin were able to continue selling their faulty product.
Itamar Engelsman <address truncated> then wrote:-

I expect that Itamar was one of the lucky ones here.
< The set-up can be difficult as COM1 and COM3 as well as COM2 and COM4 are somehow connected to each other in computers and it can also be that another device is also connected to COM4 >>
A serial port needs it's own IRQ (hardware interrupt) to work correctly. The processor needs to be told that a COM port needs to be serviced. Much like PsiWin causes a connected Psion to switch on.
In early 16-bit computers these IRQs were limited (much like IBM's limit of 640Kb memory) and only two were allocated to COM ports. DOS 3.3 introduced two more COM ports, which had to share the same IRQs as the original ports, but in those days there were many other ports and busses in use, so it was not a big problem - one just ensured that COM1 would never be needed while COM3 was in use.
We have a similar problem today with the USB ports, which is solved by installing a driver for every device on every port it maybe used on. But this slows down the computer.
So to use my GPS that has a USB connection, I need to install the driver on USB1 and USB2 of my laptop. When I use a hub, I then need to install the driver again for every port on that hub that I want to use the GPS with. Rather inefficient but claimed to be easy and not what I would expect on a buss.
A proper buss would be my choice.
