To Steve; I had a previous computer with Windows XP home and had no
difficulty communicating.  But I now do have a problem. I too have upgraded
to a new machine. Not as fancy as Steve's, a Dell 8400, but it has no serial
ports.  Is there a usb to serial adapter that works or failing that, a card?
My previous machine had one serial port and I could use two devices by
switching; however, I tried a converter with no luck. Any help appreciated.

Toshiba Librettos are wonderful but are a lot heavier than a Psion, and the
batteries don't last anything like as long.

Though I still love my Libretto 70ct,
and my Treo 600  :o)

Subject: Libretto

Hello everybody,

Reading about the Toshiba Libretto in the last Digest...
I just bought a second-hand Toshiba Libretto 100CT for € 200. It is
overclocked to 266 MHz, 1,2 Go of HD and 32 Mo of RAM and it runs Windows 98.
That is "back to the future".

But... it is smaller than my netBook. It actually fits in my Palm-Tec netBook
case *with* the AC adapter. And that's very cool !
For Psionlovers a Libretto is a very interesting gadget as it is a real
computer.
The keyboard is smaller than the netBook's keyboard and the battery does not
live as long, so for real text treatment I still use the netBook. For
Internet the Libretto is better (IE5).

I can perhaps install the Psion emulator on it. :-)

Yours truly,

Thomas van der Zijden

Have you tried XTM?  It's about as true an emulator as you can find.  Sent me
a PM for more discussion if you want...

Hi Jon,

I suspect that the answer is as with many of the other WiFi hotspots -
commercial or free.  In fact, even the 'free' ones are rarely completely open
(insofar as you cannot just fire up your email and email on them).  You have
to do what most PC users do without thinking about it much - fire up a
browser first.  Assuming that their portal is well-configured (allowing
what's called 'graceful degredation', etc.) then firing up Opera and aiming
it at any site should get it automagically redirected (usually using Java
script - make sure that's enabled) to their home page.  In the case of 'free'
access you'll probably then have to hit a 'click here' button before the
access becomes truly 'open' for your machine.  HTH.

Martin

Subject: Libretto.My 5mx/XP & PsiWin

Allan Morris wrote about the new Toshiba Libretto. I was very interested in
it. I phoned Toshiba sales here in the States to ask questions about it and
order it if I was satisfied. I tried 3 times. Each time the 'salesperson'
sounded like a very young teenager. Each question I asked resulted in being
put on hold for some minutes "while I look that up." I decided I didn't want
to buy from that company, so ended up ordering a Sony T350P. It's a little
bigger than a Libretto, and has a fingerpad (I didn't like the fingerstick
thing the Libretto has). The only negative PC Magazine could list for the
Sony was that it had a small keyboard. I have no problem with that. I like
the machine (I'm not a Windows hater).

It is a couple of inches wider than my netBook. Like the netBook, it won't be
going with me on any bike rides.  That's reserved for my 5mx. :-)

Here's what I use on my 5mx: World; Sheet; Data; iContacts; Macro5;
StickyKeys, Alarm+; BikLog5; Merlin; nSwitcher; Backup; Route; CityMaps;
Crypto; abp5; Collins English-French-English; Collins English-German-English;
JB5StopGo; JB5Utils; PsiWallpaper. I don't do games, but have PSolly on board
for the few moments I can't find anyone to talk
to. :-) In the same category or some specialized dictionaries using
TomeRaider and K2. I have other apps like Gen5 and Charmap which are
used very infrequently.

I use Backup because it lets me set an automatic run time. I use
FastBackup on the netBook.

There has been a lot written about this in previous Digests. A few
people have had problems, but I think most find 2.3.3 works great with
XP.

No, I did not.

I run the Emulator without any problem in my old Vaio.  I installed it

Indeed, I had forgotten about that.

I found it but it needs the Psion to run and I am presently away from home
for 3 months without a Psion at hand, I just have both my laptops.

Subject: Re: The Digest V1 # 770 Various Posts XP & PsiWin

Hi all,
This is in response to several recent posts about XP, being PC-less, popular
progs, Libretto etc.
Just to let you know that I've used PsiWin 2.3.3 (must be this version!)
without any problem on WinXPSP2. The SP2 patch was applied after PsiWin was
installed, and no problems with that (although the myriad of SP2
nags and issues with other software cropped up).
I've also had little problem with 98, 98SE, ME and 2000 with the Psion, as
long as I ensured I had used the registry cleaner if a previous version was
installed. However, the 98, SE and ME installations can be occasionally
flaky, requiring reconnection of the (serially connected) Psion sometimes.

Even now this long on, I have found nothing to compare with the practicality
of the Psion Netbook and 5MX I use. OK, mail synching has come on with
PocketPC2003, but wifi is just as straight forward on the Netbook (you still
need to enter the network name, password etc).

I saw a new Liibretto recently - I used to have a 70CT that I loved, but the
reliability of the Operating System (98 eventually) let it down and it never
hibernated efficiently. The new one looks sexy and comes with a dock that
seems to simply add a DVD+- drive to it. Of course it runs XP, an OS that is
mature and has had many bugs ironed out now. Still takes
20 secs to start up from hibernation though. It costs a lot, but not that
much more than a NetbookPro, so might be a worthy contender for anyone who
just can't stand the idea of not supporting M$.

At the moment for consulting work and compatability I use a Panasonic
Toughbook CFR1 (fits into a Netbook case) with XPSP2 and an Apple Powerbook
12" with OSX.3 alongside my 2 Psions. The latter is the
closest thing I can find that gets close to the Netbook - it's fabulous!. It
comes out of hibernation in seconds and finds wifi connections instantly. I
lasts for 4 hours on battery and is still only slightly larger than the
Netbook. Plus, it can also run Open Source Unix software through its X11
environment. The only reason I run a windows laptop is to use MS Access for
clients really. I use Mozilla Thunderbird for email and Firefox for Internet
on both platforms (when you need to it's easy to transfer you email messages
to a new machine as well!)

To transfer to the Mac I can use WiFi from the netbook using nFTP (the Mac
has an FTP server built in!), or CF card reader. I occasionally
email files to myself either way. I produce MSWORD documents that are RTF
(Rich Text Format) and MSEXCEL documents that are .xls (version 4) and
nConvert on the Psions does a great job.

For invoicing on the Psion I use Company, which outputs as HTML (web page)
and also emply the powers of PDFPrinter, which means I can produce invoices
for almost anyone and email them straight away to them if I
need to.

PhoneManPro is great with my Ericsson R520 and SonyEricsson T610 for SMS -
I'll never understand predictive texting. I also have my important emails
copied to a (free) UK2.net webmail account that works great in Opera on the
Psion and is simple and quicker than other webmail services I have tried (my
One2One webmail is so slow in comparison).

Of course Word, Agenda, Sheet, Data and Jotter are all fully used - built in
but nonetheless absolutely essential and do the job, as does Email (with
SMTPauth running to allow sending these days).

The Psion still attracts attention - even the 5MX - which already has a
keyboard built in! I keep my eye on POSltd and the XPDA initiative, except
that if it offers nothing more than a rebadged 5MXPro, I won't be changing.
However, it's using the right tools for the job, and my Psions over the years
have saved me countless hours of work, enabled me to work in weird places, to
take work with me and do more than just read it. I shall be ever grateful to
them for that. It is a shame they abandoned
one of their solid user bases so completely. Seduced by the lure of mobile
phones, only time will tell whether an unconnected base unit
still has its use - mind you, even eBay prices are still buoyant.

Personally, I can live without a camera most of the time, I don't have any
friends (...who want multimedia messages sending), I can cope with rtf
documents on all my platforms (nConvert on the Psions), CF disks are very
useful (look how the world has taken to USB flash disks now, AFAICS just a
development of the flash memory idea we have used for years), and I can still
plan my life to suit me, rather than be tied to a desktop - which I still see
a lot of PocketPC users being, as they can't live without their desktops for
as long as the all-in-one (with usuable, stable, creative software already
included in the OS) typeable unit Psions allow us to.

As always, only time will tell how longlived the Psion formfactor will be.
Because it does so much, and has such useful software, it represents
astounding value for money for me. I've gone through 3 mobile phones whilst
I've owned the Psion 5MX and Netbook alone, and as I've no friends, a phone
is probably a waste of money anyway!

I can go away for days and not miss a PC/Mac at all with my 5MX - and the
power will still be there, espcially if I have bought my AA batteries!

Designs that have a long shelf life are not commercially sound these days,
manufacturers want us to buy this year's model, and next years' etc. Psion
prodcued a product that perhaps was too good, and then
decided they couldn't improve on it much more. Let's hope someone eventually
manages to resurrect EPOC and give it the future it merits.

Subject: "Must have" software for Revo

Hello All

My 5MX died a while ago and I was recently given a Diamond Mako.  A fresh set
of batteries from the local (Cape Town) Psion support folks and I was up an
running again. The Revo/Mako happily accepted to restore from my 5MX, no
problems.

Now, in the interim a lot of the authors have disappeared.

Thomas Nemec, for one. Where's his stuff gone? How could I register his Time
Log thingy?

Luckily I still have my Tomeraider reg. key, but I guess they're still around
so it wouldn't be a problem.

My main question is this: Who's got a list of the coolest things I might want
to load on my Revo?

Having no more SD card is more of a pain than the smaller screen I reckon,
there are some hefty Tomeraider files I'd like to get on there.

Talking of Tomeraider, I'd really like an up to date version of the IMDB but
the latest is only for TomeRaider 3 which is not available for the Psion.
Anyone got any ideas how the old IMDB for TomeRaider was generated? Are there
some scripts out there?

As an aside, this looks handy:

Re.: Money back! - As far as I can see it Teklogix existed before Psion and
will continue to exist after Psion. They already had their own market and
clients and are not really dependent on the dwindling number of EPOC Psion
users still around. Your comments are wishful thinking but not much chance to
become reality, unfortunately.

Re.: Libretto - With the price of laptops and notebooks currently well below
Gbp 500.- the Libretto will not be a serious option at a price well above Gbp

Re.: Windows XP Pro & PsiWin V2.3.3 - Sure, I installed Psiwin 2.3.3 on my

Windows XP Professional also with SP2 and also no problems.

All the various theories about SPAM and it's causes are proven to be wrong by
the Digest mailbox. We only receive mail in this mailbox and never ever use
it to send email, always using our own SMTP servers. We never ever surf the

from 28 messages in total (including returned digests) offering us from

I have no idea how these SPAM senders got to our email address. And we can't
even delete them all automatically as sometimes messages sent by subscribers
