Cathy,

>>I do not usually have more than one or two programs running at the same time and almost always close all of them down before switching off - a legacy of early Windows training!<<

This is basically unnecessary on a Psion, as it is such a stable operating system.

>>However, more and more often now the Psion reports that it cannot complete a "write" as the D card is corrupt or there is insufficient memory. This is usually when using either Data or Agenda files on the D card, when the programs themselves are on the C drive. Turning the machine off for a few moments seems to reset it and allow me to continue what I was doing - but it happens more and more frequently and is becoming a real pain.<<

Ome possibility is that trying to write to the CF card when the main batteries are low can cause the CF card to become corrupted; itwill certainly cause an error of some kind to be displayed.

It could also be that the card has become fragmented; in this case, it might be worth copying the contents of your CF card to another computer, formatting the CF card (FAT16 only!!) and then copying the original data back to the card. If you do this carefully, there is no chance of data loss and it may well solve the problem.

I hope this helps,
cheers, Ian.

I recently heard it mentioned that there are replacement slide-in battery packs for Psion netBook/7Books that you can load with alkaline or NiMH rechargable batteries. I've searched all over the Internet, but can't find such battery packs anywhere.

At this point, I know of only 2 ways of powering my 7Book:
1. either by plugging it into the mains, or
2. by using the slide-in lithium battery pack.

I would be very interested in learning a way to use the 7Book with replaceable batteries (I hate carrying around the clunky charger). I'd be grateful for any links/suggestions.

Peter

PS: Our local Starbucks recently introduced a free wireless LAN (30 minutes with any purchase), and the 7Book + Buffalo AirStation card worked surprisingly well. Pages loaded very quickly even with images, and downloads were really fast. In future, I'd like to some have extra batteries along just in case the 7Book needs some extra juice.

Answer to: Karl Wagner

Re.: 9300 Time auto-update - If you don't at least set the country correctly you cannot make phone calls choosing numbers from your contacts as your phone will not know where you are and therefore dial out incorrectly.

Answer to: Chris Malcolm

Re.: position updating - On the UIQ there is a program called "Frontview" that allows you to set a name for any place you are at for more than a certain period of time. Each time you are there again it will show the name again, clearly working on the principle you wrote about.

Answer to: Cathy Roberts

Re.: Reported corruption / insufficient memory - No, this is not a reported or known problem with the Psions. i think your best bet is to copy your CF card to a PC, reformat it in the Psion, and copy the files back again to the CF card. However, in general it is much better to keep your programs on the CF card and your files on the internal (C) disk. Writing to a CF card takes more battery life than to a C disk and it might well be that your batteries get a little low and than you cannot write to a CF card anymore. If your program files are on the CF card, once you have opened the program it will be in memory and there will be no further contact with the CF card, while when you save files this will take less battery life writing to the C card. Having said that, the only further remark is to make sure you regularly back-up your files on the C disk just tin case all batteries go flat for one reason or another.

Best regards,

Hi there Cathy,
I would advise creating a new Agenda file, opening your main Agenda file and
using Tidy/Archive to extract all your "old" entries into a file and then
Merge that file into the new Agenda file, leaving your existing Agenda file
as your main Agenda.
I do this on a monthly basis, and have an annual Agenda file to save "old"
items to.
My largest "old" Agenda file is 274Kb, most of the others range from 162Kb
to 38Kb, while my current file is 67Kb.
All the best,
Kate!!

2/3 of C offers a rather restricted memory margin.
/Mail.  /Logs, /Temp,  Web or Opera directories can rapidly occupy your small remaining space and contribute to the "Continue" syndrom
You could add a memory module; Move Mail/ to D; Reclaim memory; Move some System directories and apps to D:/, use Zexe...

My repeated Psion agenda entry that marks the end of BST appears to have let me down for the first time! This is one of the more complicated entries thst I _was_ able to transfer to the Palm and is set for the fourth sunday of October i.e. 23rd October this year.

I had the whole family geared up for a change this morning only to find it was still officially Summer albeit a very wet one.
