Thanks for the suggestions for lightplus, it looks just the job. But,
www.romankeller.ch seems to have been taken over by a mobile phone

Hope that helps.

Connection cable Garmin to Psion or anyting else and more:

http://pfranc.com/projects/g45contr/emap/index.htm

http://pfranc.com/cgi-bin/pub/c_de/Garmin_connector_eTrex_geko.html?pid=e2Pl ug;speak=English

Can order the Garmin-interface plug for diy (detailed instructions provided, it's a well made, witty design and an easy soldering task - you have to sacrifice an original 232 Psion-cabl, though). Readymade also available, including one that will charge both the Psion and the Garmin in the car, I believe. Bought mine there and was happy - not otherwise related, needless to say :-)

BTW: They usually sell a minimum of 2 for ca 17 EUR, I guess if you order more it's somewhat less/pc. So if anyone needs diy plugs, we could order several together and mail them between us for a stamp, they're so small they go in a normal letter. I'd take one spare (preferably flat-type).

best,

Steve thanks for directing me to your site,
Very useful information! I'm in the process now of chasing City Planner (EPOC edn) on eBay and hopefully will manage to get that sometime fairly soon. As for the GPS, I've found nothing on eBay that mentions Psion compatibility. Could anyone recommend a GPS device/cable configuration they have that is working? Obviously, if anyone has the Psion GPS that they're looking to sell I could make a reasonable offer!!

Cheers for the help so far,
Kevin

Itamar,

>>Re. Lifespan of phone battery - Yesterday I was traveling and my phone battery went flat very fast. I had to buy a recharger (forgot mine at home) and charged it during the day to almost 100%. Left the place at abt. 3.00 pm with almost full battery (86% or so) and had abt. 3 shortish phone calls and set Profimail to check email every half an hour. It downloads only headers and I must have downloaded about 15 messages or so, all small messages of a few Kb only and send a few answers. By 7.00 pm the battery was as good as empty again needing to find a power point at the airport. The phone is now in use abt. 15 months or so. I bought a new battery at the airport but wonder whether this is normal or not ?<<

I suspect that your battery is fine, but that some process is consuming a lot of CPU and battery power. This has happened to me several times, and is usually solved by switching off, waiting a bit, and switching back on. If you just recharge the battery without switching the phone off, the problem process will continue to drain the battery; you can sometimes notice this by the fact that the battery appears to charge more slowly than normal. The main annoyance with this sort of problem is that it invariably happens when you least expect it, and you only notice when it when it's too late to do anything about it (ie. when you're on the train without a charger)...

Of course, part of the problem is that SE don't allow "normal" applications (ie. the communicorder, which can kill the battery PDQ) to be closed without installing some third-party launcher/process manager application, which is just plain stupid in my opinion. Maybe this will be different with UIQ 3!?!

Cheers, Ian.

Subject: RE: routeplanner with GPS - what do I need?

Dear Kevin,

I fairly recently got my Psion working with GPS and Routeplanner/Streetplanner in order to navigate in my car. It was quite a hassle, and if it wasn't for the fact that I was trying to do it on the cheap, I'd be inclined to buy a more modern all-in-one solution. However, what I did was:

1) Find the latest version of TomTom CityMaps Europe and RoutePlanner Europe on Ebay. Their respective part numbers are 70911.415 and 70802.413 respectively (on back of the CD box).

2) Get an update for CityMaps from TomTom (I can let you have it if it's easier).

3) Buy a serial GPS unit from Ebay. I bought what turned out to be a Globalsat BR304. It has to get its power from an external source, which is a downside (things like the Garmin handhelds have an internal battery). This unit, and similar ones, are designed to be plugged into laptops, so cabling is not totally straightforward (see below).

I believe TomTom (then called Palmtop) did bring out their own GPS specifically for the Psion at one stage, but I've not seen them up for sale. A useful website for GPS reviews is www.pocketgps.co.uk

4) Get the appropriate cabling.

Itamar said:

> Can anyone help him to find a connection calbe, I don't

This was the hardest bit! I had to buy a serial-serial crossover adapter (null modem), which I think I got from Expansys, and use the Psion serial cable. The power cable for the GPS unit I bought from Deluo in the States (www.deluogps.com). It had to have a PS/2 connector on one end, and a car cigarette lighter adapter on the other. It also had to be the right voltage. Anyone handy with a soldering iron could probably modify a standard car adapter.

Having got it working at last, it works quite well, although modern software puts it in the shade (e.g. no 3D view). The lack of colour screen is also rather a downside.

Sorry about the length of this saga, but still, it proves it is possible!

I recommend the following page for alternative solutions to mine (including Garmin hardware and the free Realmaps):
http://www.ericlindsay.com/epoc/sigps5.htm

Hope this helps,

Ed.

Answer to: Tony Napier

Re.: Problem with my mBook - Thanks for the answer but it is not _the_ answer. I tried for some days to switch the mBook of before closing it and it did not help either. I suppose it is a matter of patiently eliminating each possibility until I will find the answer.  In the meantime it can be painful when you travel and need the mBook to go into a meeting and suddenly it is flat. I always carry a spare battery with me now when traveling.

When exporting from a Psion database to to CSV or Access, the psiWin converter creates files where carriage returns and maybe other characters are converted into visible square boxes that I cannot remove in Excel or access with a search replace.  Any ideas on how to clean up these files for sharing with other apps on the PC?

Thanks.

Are you synching with Outlook?  If so, then convert your Contacts in  Outlook to csv or dbf, then drag-n-drop the file to your Series 5 and PsiWin  will convert it to a Psion Data file.  That's how I do it.

Good luck, Jake

Dear All.

<< hope this might help someone ... synching software for Macs and
various phones >>

What has to be noted is the following:

a) Salling Software designed MobileSync for the synchronisation of
SonyEricsson phones and the Entourage application that's part of
Microsoft Office for Macintosh. You don't need MobileSync when you're
using AddressBook and iCal as Apple's own iSync will do the job
(AddressBook, iCal and iSync are part of MacOS X). While MobileSync
is useless when you have a Nokia, Motorola or other non-SonyEricsson
phone.

b) The list of SonyEricsson phones supported by MobileSync is well
out of date. None of the SonyEricsson Pxxx models are supported, for
example. Apple's iSync 2 (MacOS X 10.4) is much. much better in this
respect.

Dear Itamar,

<< ... I bought a new battery at the airport but wonder whether this
is normal or not ? >>

I'd say it's normal for SonyEricsson's Pxxx models.

What I've noticed is that the aerial/receiver of the Pxxx models are
markedly less sensitive than those of other mobile phones and
smartphones. What happens when signal is low is that a mobile phone
will boost its transmission power in order to stay in contact with
the cell tower.  As there's a regular message exchange between phone
and cell tower when in standby - so that the network knows in which
cell the phone is - a low signal condition means a higher power
consumption. The lower sensitivity of the Pxxx models means that
they're not as frugal as others. But that's not all. I've also
noticed that the power consumption of the Pxxx models under low
signal conditions while in standby is higher than that of other
smartphones. Surprisingly high as the battery charge level can go
down quite rapidly.

It's one of the reasons why I'm not going to replace my P800 by
another SonyEricsson Pxxx when the time comes. The power consumption
of the P800 is simply too erratic for comfort. And the P900 and P910
are no better in my experience. I'm therefore not surprised to read
that your P910 went from 86% charge to empty in four hours.

Arrr - just like AutoRoute 2005.  It does not have the M6 toll.  Well actually it does as a disconnected track.  Not a motorway.  Not navigational as it's not connected.

Kevin, I've been using a GPS with a Psion for almost 10 years.  The first was with a 3a.  Send me a direct e-mail and I'll help where possible.

Subject: OPL reference on 9500

Hi all,

Does anyone know if there's any good OPL reference material for Symbian - especially a command reference list - out there, that I can view directly on my 9500, in .HLP format perhaps, or comma or tab-separated, so that I could load it into Ydata or something similar?  Or indeed in any regular format, that I could, with some conversion & perhaps careful bulk editing, get into a fomat suitable for loading onto the device.

I want to start fiddling around with OPL development in my odd bits of spare time, but I need to be able to do it all directly on the device, not involving a PC or any paper reference material.

Also, I've got the OPL dev kit & I've had a look at the OPL wiki, but I can't find any documentation for the various OPXs which are included & also, there doesn't seem to be any 3rd pary OPXs or OPMs available for Symbian.  Maybe I've missed something.

Simon Jeffree

Martin, et al.

Before you all rush out for Alarm+ I must point out that I donot have Alarm+ installed (and have never had it), yet my backup experience mirrors yours. I think one of the many Windows updates has fixed a windows bug which meant that Psiwin thought the files were different when they were identical. I'm guessing Windows reported the timestamps incorrectly and this caused Psiwin to think the files were different.

What have other people's experiences been?

Dear All,

Someone recently pointed me to this URL:-

http://ai.spirahellic.com/Psion_Support/sindex.htm

The story is that Psion were indeed readying a Linux version of the netBook Pro towards the end of last year.  Apparently this particular website development company were developing the website pages for the product - due to be called the Psion LX - but for some reason they never removed the work in progress from the web!  I am reliably informed that it only needed a few more weeks of software testing but got canned prematurely - a crying shame IMHO.  Déjâ vu anyone?

From the readme-s:

C2F by Malcolm Bryant is a small freeware application by Malcolm Bryant which reads your Contacts database and writes user-selected fields to a standard comma or tab-delimited ASCII file. You can then import them into Data or any other program which imports standard ASCII files.

and

DataContact is a small utility to import Data files into Contacts.
Pascal NICOLAS, http://pnicolas.epocboulevard.com seems to be outdated.

They are both freeware, so if you can't find them email me and I'll send them to you. The former helped transfer data from a vintage Mac phone-book assitant to a Psion Data file. Both take a while to dig, but worked without glitch for me.

BTW, Data also exports as text.

best,

vlad
