Hi Itamar,

Actually, Tony was pretty much correct, as I suffered from exactly the problem which you described.  The problem is with the microswitch, but rather than failing to switch the Netbook off, it is wrongly switching the Netbook *on*!  (Perhaps when the Netbook is moved?)

Therefore, no matter how carefully you ensure your Netbook is switched-off, you can find it's battery drained, because it switched-on again.  The only (software) answer is to disable switching-on when the Netbook is opened. Yes, a pain I know, but I've got used to it.  Apart from that, my Netbook (well, 7book) is working 100 percent.

Even my original battery is working well.  Rolf Brunsting (sp?) seems to have been right that you should keep the Lithium battery topped-up, but occasionally fully discharge-recharge it.  Before he mentioned that (ages
ago) I was having problems with the battery not lasting so long.  So I blame Rolf for not being able to justify buying a 9500 yet ;-)

BTW, if anyone is interested in a better MP3 player for their Netbook (or
5mx I suppose), they might like to read this thread on Psion Place:

Well ... last Friday (November 11th) was the last day of a scientific

discussed at the convention was whether to continue with the practice
of adjusting our atomic clocks using leap seconds. As it was
suggested to use a larger correction - a leap minute or leap hour -
which would have to be applied less frequently. The convention
decided to keep using the leap second for the time being. But, as
there was sufficient interest in the leap hour, a working group was
formed to investigate all the repercussions of introducing the leap
hour correction. The working group is to report its finding during
the next convention.

Hi Simon

I've sent you a PRF file of the OPL command reference (Mobipocket format). I use this for quickly looking up command syntax etc. It has been created from a HTML file which is also included.

As to documentation on the OPX's for Communicators: you're right. There isn't any. But, the example DemoOPL that comes with the OPL development kit gives a good idea of how to use AppFrame.opx for example. The
devkit also contains a document written by Phil Spencer (OPL porting guide) which is a good reference to find out what has been changed between ER5 OPL and ER6 OPL.

There are some new OPX's (and very shortly there will also some new OPM's available like Listbox, Scrollbar and ColorDialog) for Communicators (check out my website for details,
http://opldev.broeze.com). (Another shameless plug) There's also a forum dedicated to OPL programming at
http://www.freeboards.net/index.php?mforum=opldevelopment.

If you need any help, don't hesitate to drop me a line.

Cheers, Arjen

Hi Simon,
at www.allaboutopl.com/downloads/OPLCommands.rtf you will find the OPL commands. If you can convert the pdf file in a doc file and than in a csv file, you will have you want. I think, many OPL developers would you say "thank you".
Let's know, when you finish create the file.

As you are starting the OPL developing, I would recommend you also to check the helpfull program EventCore by Ewan Spence (www.freepoc.org/viewapp.php?id=10

Incidentally, Orange have a useful facility, which costs up to 50p
depending on how you use it, which guess your location, allows you to
refine it by giving you menus of street names, landmarks, etc., and
will then send you a map image of your surroundings which you can pan
around. You can also do the same for a destination, which you can
either quote the address or post-code of, or search for using a yellow
pages database like a phone directory. It will then construct a route
of how to get there by vcar or by foot, and show you a series of
little maps along the route as you request them. Pretty much the same
kind of facility as you get out of a mapping and routeing GPS in the
car, but not using GPS. Its a GPRS facility.

Probably other phone service providers have the same kind of facility.

Subject: New UID allocation scheme

Hi all developers,

I just read this in a Symbian newsletter:

>Automated UID request system - Symbian has introduced an automated web-based >UID request system to replace the legacy email-based system. Please use this >new system as email request will not being handled anymore.
>
>http://www.symbian.exvn.com/page.cfm?article=0xc43d3566440ca5936a4b48751d79cbd7.39.8372

The URL will be redirected to https://www.symbiansigned.com/app/page/uidfaq

The main purpose seems to be the support for signed SymbianOS V9 applications. If you need an UID for an EPOC application, go for "Class 1 | 0x10000000 - 0x1FFFFFFF | Legacy UID allocations". You need to register with Symbian to use the system.

Subject: Re: Reported corruption / insufficient memory

Greeting to all from a frequent reader but rare poster!

I am perfectly sure that one - or many - of you will be able to advise me on the problem currently plaguing my Psion 5mx

I use a 128Mb CF card for the majority of my data and for some of the accessory programs. Most of the time this arrangement seems to work fine, programs happily start up, wherever they actually are, when the file I want to open is tapped - whether both file and program are on the same disk as each other or not. The C disk is 63% full, the D (CF card) is only 47% used. I do not usually have more than one or two programs running at the same time and almost always close all of them down before switching off - a legacy of early Windows training!

However, more and more often now the Psion reports that it cannot complete a "write" as the D card is corrupt or there is insufficient memory. This is usually when using either Data or Agenda files on the D card, when the programs themselves are on the C drive. Turning the machine off for a few moments seems to reset it and allow me to continue what I was doing - but it happens more and more frequently and is becoming a real pain.

I read the recent saga of the huge Agenda file with interest but, apart from the Old Testament, the largest file I have is 512K, hardly excessive, I would have thought.

Interestingly, I never have any problem with that particular file, perhaps because it and its program reside on the C drive?

So my question (after that lengthy intro!) is - am I using a duff CF card, is my Psion itself miserable for some reason, have I inadvertently damaged the little connecting pins inside or is this a known problem with Psions & cards?

Cathy

Answer to: Kevin Bewley

Re.: GPS on Psion - A garmin eTrex will do just fine, you don't need anything more elaborate with it's own maps incorporated or something like that. The cables you can order at the addresses mentioned in digest 840.

Answer to: Ian Chapple

Re.: battery life - Thanks for the answer. In general I do try and keep track on what is open and not but it could be I did not realise as you wrote. I do have Handy Day installed which gives a list of all open applications with the possibility to close them which I use quite frequently. And of course, when watching a movie with Smartmovie on my way up and down to Hamburg this Thursday I will take my spare battery <G>.

Answer to: Rolf Brunsting on the same subject, thanks for your answer too. It could be the battery life was shortened by using email several times via GPRS. Also, it happened while I was in The Netherlands so could it be that whenever I am not in the UK battery life will be less due to the roaming and not being on your own network ?

Answer to: Ed Kaneen

Re.: routeplanner with GPS - Glad you got it working. I drove many km's with my 5MX connected to a GPS and the lack of colours was not such a problem at all. I think it works very well but for when the sun catches the screen. One of the main missing features is that if you go wrong it does not automatically recalculates the route. Nowadays I use my mBook which of course does give me the colour screen as well as a much larger screen than any other device, but you do need a flat dashboard to install it securely. I am also looking at other more modern devices but think that over 500 pounds for a unit with GPS and European wide maps is overpriced.

Thanks, that was a good tip. With Dualopera, I can now select which version of Opera to use, although it unfortunately does not give me the ability to run both apps simultaneously.

To get on to a wireless hotspot, I need Opera 3.62, but to access a Yahoo email account, I need Opera 5.14. For general browsing, reading news articles, etc., I still use Web, since I can quickly download selected links via 'Cntl+Shift+D" without having to open them first in the browser.

It's a shame there's not a good all-purpose Psion browser that could combine these various abilities in a single browser.

Peter
