Ahh...  I thought it maybe sounded a little too good to be true!  ;¬)

I guess it only applies to latest (probably SP2) versions of WinXP since this bug certainly applied before...

Oh well, back to the drawing board for the next chance to shout 'Eureka!'  <grin>

As you describe it, I'd say your card is corrupt and is goind to stop working soon, so save Agenda and any important data _asap_ on C and _then_ try to backup files on the CF. In this order - as the CF might stop working in the middle of the backup. Then reformat the CF (first in a camera or a CF-reader if the Psion returns errors on reformatting it, then again on the Psion). I've never seen a CF become unusable for good, but they've occasionally had difficulties reformatting.

Hope this helps,

vlad

Hi Folks,

Cathy (Roberts), it appears you are having two problems.

Writing to a CF needs power. If the voltage is too low you’ll get corruption. That may be your problem. Assuming your 5mx is not on external power, try using fully charged batteries. I use NiMH rechargeables, only changed weekly as the beast is *normally* on external power.

As you have a CF card you should free RAM by moving as much as you can to it. 63% full for the C: drive is pretty full. With ten applications open now, I’ve 3,539 KB (nearly 3.5 MB) used of the C: disk and 15,104 KB (nearly 15 MB) as application memory (as I’ve 24 MB RAM courtesy D&G that’s more relevant). The beast reports a 73% free C: drive (39% free memory) which seems adequate.

Incidentally, neither Data nor Agenda are on the C: drive. They are in ROM on the Z: drive (protected RAM if you’ve a 5mx Pro {I think}, but still the Z: drive).

The only applications that live on my C: drive are those few that won’t run from CF (Psi85 is one) and all documents *except* eMail are on the D: drive.

File size *per se* is not relevant. I use a big TomeRaider file (over 15 megabytes). It’s how the application loads it that matters. The (really) huge TR file, with application, uses just 132 kilobytes of memory. Opera 5.14 can easily use over 2 megabytes, sometimes over 4 megabytes, for comparatively simple sites with small(ish) files. Even Macro5 uses 132 kilobytes and Merlin 496 kilobytes.

Happy days,
Phil.

Hi Folks,

Only an offer!

On my website (http://aypee1.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/) at email.html is a graphic of this eAddress. It is a transparent GIF file.

It links to a (free) JavaScript that has the proper eAddress encoded. The text of the eAddress appears *nowhere*. I can, at exactly no cost, use the downloaded JavaScript program to generate a code using a user-selected pair of prime numbers, à la PGP.

I would prefer people to download this (http://www.jracademy.com/~jtucek/email/download.php) page themselves (or go to http://www.jracademy.com/~jtucek/email/index.php) and disconnect from the ’Net (switching off the modem or equivalent) before generating the JavaScript. The script may not work properly on a Psion. Certainly the generated JavaScript itself doesn’t seem to, though it does on all my other browsers except iCab on the Mac.

If you put the JavaScript under the graphic clicking on it *automatically* runs the preferred eMail client with the real eAddress as *mailto:* (but even *mailto:* doesn’t appear in the script).

If anyone wants a transparent GIF I can also help (I gather few programs generate them though all seem to read them). I do need the pixel dimensions needed, the eAddress (of course) and the required colour for the eAddress - the background’s transparent, of course. Don’t make the dimensions too small or the eAddress might not show properly.

Happy days,
Phil.

This is an unfortunate lack, however, I did find an Opl file which, when executed, is meant to recalculate your route from your current position in either RoutePlanner or CityMaps. As I recall, using macro5 you can set, say, the "menu" silk screen button to call this file when on the road which makes it very useful. The file is called "GPScalcNew" and you can get it from
http://psion.uh-lab.de/

However, I must confess that I couldn't get it to work properly with CityMaps! I suspect it is designed to work with a slightly older version with different function keys. I made a minor simplification, and it now "sort of" works! I think it worked fine with RoutePlanner.

Answer to: Cathy Roberts

Re.: Reported corruption / insufficient memory - I am not sure what causes your problem but it could well have to do with the batteries as writing to a CF card takes a lot more battery power than writing to the internal disk. As already covered before in the digest, it is advisable to put programs on the CF card and keep your data on the internal disk (and make sure, anyhow, to make regular back-ups !!). Once you have opened the program it will not go back to the CF card anymore and you will be working on the much more power efficient internal disk for all your data.

Subject: Subject: Itamar's Battery problems on the P910

I think my phone is about the same age as yours, Itamar. I would consider myself a heavy user (48 hours max from battery if left uncharged) and typically have the phone in the cradle all day. To date (fingers crossed) I have not seen any degredation.

It is of course possible your battery has expired, but it is also possible that - as has been suggested by somebody else - that there may have just been a runaway process that was using up the CPU and therefore the battery in the background. The best way to detect and eliminate these is to use the freeware SMAN spplication. This is now at version 4 and is available from http://www.renegade-uiq.com/.

Of course, when you installed your new battery, this would have involved switching off your P910, removing the battery, fitting the new one, charging it up and then - sometime after that - switching it on again. All this would have ensured that any possible rogue process was well gone when you switched it on again and this could also help to persuade you that indeed the old battery was at fault.

Or was it? The question remains ...

BTW, during this process, you might have also seen the benefits of the new flash memory that is common in better quality devices these days. This means you did not have to reinstall any of your applications - even those in "memory". The Psions normally got over this problem by having a backup battery, which was great. As long as it hadn't expired ...

All the best from Dublin, Ireland

You could also try-out my "ER6 emulation for OPL" package:
http://www.freepoc.org/viewapp.php?id=76

Although it began life as emulation of Symbian OPL for our Psions, I had to
create (abstract) wrappers for some things, and that in turn meant 'porting'
the same support files to Symbian OPL, so that the same source code can (in
principle) be used for both Symbian & Psion devices...

The main up-shot of this is that I wrote a fairly comprehensive replacement
for the AppFrame/CommandButtonArray and Toolbar, which I call the
CommandBar (or CBar for short).  While it's really a wrapper for the CBA &
Toolbar, I feel that it is easier & more powerful (and more portable) than
either!  It is also documented :-)

While I'm extolling the virtues of my ER6 emu package, I should also mention
that it contains a novel way to ease the handling of devices with different
screen sizes, so that you won't need to invent an ad-hoc solution (which
often don't work well).  Hopefully it should allow OPL programs to work on
a larger range of Symbian devices (OPL run-time permitting of course).

Subject: Synchronization

I've never used Outlook on my PC, but decided to investigate Psion's Synchronizer function. I start the process. It connects. In the Synchronize window I select 'Agenda-Contacts program'. Click the synchronize button. After opening and reading Outlook & Psion, I get an Outlook message:

"This program is trying to access e-mail addresses you have stored in Outlook. Do you want to do this? If this is unexpected, it may be a virus and you should choose "No"."

I check the "Allow access for x minutes", select the default "1 min", and click "Yes". Then the process continues successfully.

Is this the normal process? Is there some way to have the synch do its thing without my having to check that box and click "Yes" each time?

In any case, the synchronization is pretty neat. :-)
