Subject: MC218
My MC218 looks like its acting up. It needed new batteries so I put them in and nothing happened. So I though maybe they were faulty and put in another set. Same thing happened. Nothing lit up on the screen. Then after a bit got a straight line horizontal across the screen. Now the screen is just blank. The screen's back light works ok and you can hear the clicks if you hold a button down. I am now on mains power and it's the same both battery and mains. Maybe that's it for my MC218--very nice machine.
Thanks,
Bobby

Subject: 5mx vs 9500 DOS emulator
>I would love to switch to the 9500
I actually have a brand new 9300 but cant switch to either because I daily use a DOS program run under the XTM DOS emulator and no-one is writing a DOS emulator for the 9300 or 9500
I've had 2 9290s - for which the XTM emulator is available but 1 developed a broken hinge and the other developed glitches in the operating system
Therefore I had to switch back to the 5mx

>> Do you mean Data? I've never heard it called "the "telephone
directory" application"!
>> There are several third party database apps for the 9500. Try Power
Data first. www.epocware.com
Excuse me for my English ; I am using a French version of the Psion and
the application I am referring to is called "Fiches" (and I use it
primarily for managing lists of telephone numbers) ; "Power Data" from
epocware does indeed seem to be what I need, thank you.

Subject: Off-topic: printer installation problem in Windows
My apologies for putting this sort of problem onto this list: I haven't been able to find a solution on the Web or in Windows Help.
After recent work on my PC at the shop, I've tried to reinstall my printer. When I try to print, I get this message:
>
There was an error writing to COM1: for the printer (EPSON Stylus COLOR 640):
Cannot access the port. It may be in use by another program.
Quit other programs and try printing again.
>
I'm running Windows ME. Of course, I shut down other programs; I've also tried reinstalling the COM1 Port - all without success. And I've been through the printer installation procedure again.
Can anyone tell me how to proceed next? Off list, if it seems too tedious to inflict on others.
Thanks,
Chris

Subject: 9500 vs. 5mx
The 5mx is far superior o the 9500 in its search mode. In fact I
would rate the the 5mx as twice to three times as fast as the 9500.
An annoying feature of 9500 search it that after you have entered the
search item you must NOT press enter but just wait until it does its
thing. The 5mx in common with all other search programs requires you
to press Enter after entering the word to be searched. Pressing Enter
on the 9500 just brings up the first record in database or possibly an
item found on the previous search.
For looking up my Contact telephone number have had to go back to
using Psion have'n't the patience to wait 4/5 seconds for a search on
9500
