Subject: Nokia 9500 small lcd damaged
Hi
The small lcd on my nokia 9500 is damaged and as such cannot be repaired
under warranty as I dropped it. I have seen a small lcd available on Ebay
for £30 which i am planning to purchase and install myself.
I wondered if anyone had done anything similar on a 9500/9300 and could
advise if the task is easy as it looks?
Regards,
Craig Carroll

Subject: 9500 various issues
Hi All
Hope everyone has had a good Christmas and Chanukah and any other celebrations.
A few late responses to contributions I missed whilst celebrating:
To ITAMAR who on 20 December wrote:
>>>Re.: Idesk - Are you telling us that this program will allow the user to create, record and use macros on the 9500 ? In OPL format ? Could I ask you to write some more about this program and how you use it ? If it is true that it truly replaces Macro5 that might be a decisive factor for some people to switch to the 9500. <<<
This is I think one of the few missing features of iDesk. Hopefully Arjen can be persuaded to add it!

>>> 1. Keyboard. It has been stated by some that an external keyboard will allow faster typing on a Nokia 9500, Nokia 9300 or a SE P900/910. While this is true in many situations, my need is for a tool which is instantly typeable and which can be typed on also when there is no flat desk surface. This rules out using a foldable external keyboard.....
I've been playing with external keyboards on the 9500 recently, and have been having a few problems with them. And given the amount I've typed over the last couple of months, I find myself missing that 5mx keyboard.... <<<<
I am using my foldable bluetooth keyboard with my 9500 more and more. I can even use it on my lap and not only on a solid surface if neccessary.
Please tell us about your other problems with foldable keyboards, perhaps we can assist.
>>>> Must admit, I'm not overly impressed with the 9500 desk, I want folders within folders, as a minium. I'm sure I could think of a few more features that would be nice to. <<<<<
iDesk can in many ways replace the 9500 desktop and offers folders within folders as well. It also has hotkeys to directly access these from any application. It is freeware.
>>>> As an aside, can the 5mx send/receive via infrared to a 9500? <<<<
Yes, I use Cbeam on the 5mx to do this regularly. No software required on the 9500. It works perfectly and is freeware.
TO AUSTIN who wrote on 24 December about Psion Presentation Maker:
>>>> In relation to the ongoing debate about the 9500 vs. Psion, I wonder if Presentation Maker can be used on the 9500 or if there is an equivalent PPT viewer? <<<<
Yes, there is built in presentations viewer. It works very well with Powerpoint presentations. Apparently it can also beam presentations to a projector via infrared or bluetooth if you have the correct drivers, but I have not tried this yet. Does anyone have experience with this?
TO ITAMAR who wrote on 24 Dec:
>>>> Re.: Browsers with Banks - I also use internet banking on my PC, but the discussion was about using it on a small PDA. <<<<
I am able to access my bank (Standard Bank) internet banking using the browser on the 9500. It works very reliably. This is very secure site which has regularly been upgraded as there have been a number of attempts to compromise it in the past year.
To STEVE LITCHFIELD who wrote on Christmas Day:
>>>> Once and for all, Word/Documents on the 9500/9300 have (nearly) exactly the same keystroke combos as Word on the Psion. Chr plus nav-left = Home, Chr + nav-right=End, chr+nav-up=Page up, chr+nav-down=Page down, ctrl+chr+nav-up = Top of document, and so on. <<<<
Steve, the reason that you have to keep on repeating this advice is that it does not appear in any documentation which comes with the 9500. Nokia should be paying you a retainer!

Max

Steve,
Thanks for input but if I switch on the 'advanced' then I may as well
go away and have a cup of tea !!
My iPaq 5500 seems faster although having to stab away at a visual
keyboard letter by letter slows total time by a great deal.

Many thanks to both Alans for the replies. I have already set up a spreadsheet on my 9500 for this purpose, but I was experimenting to see if it was possible to do it in SmallBase. I look forward to seeing Alan Morris's app, when it is finished. I already have AutoCalc by L3 solutions, but I find it a very clunky application with no means of exporting the information. I can of course, do this with either Sheet or SmallBase.
Many thanks,
Martin

Re.: SmallBase Problem - On my mBook (Epoc) I use the program MyCar that was written by Ad Bosch and should be available on the pages of Epoc Freeware. It is a very nice and useful program that gives you all these details and much more.

Martin
You left out one important (for me) feature, the Psion 5 & 5mx are the
only PDAs which can be connected directly to a printer. This is
useful when on the move as one can still find friendly persons who
will let you connect to their printer to bring reports etc uptodate.
Unless if course you wish to carry around a couple of Bluetooth
dongles, one for USB and anothe for Parallel ports.

Subject: Which mobile phone do you prefer to augment your 5mx Austin,
Please could you let me have the emailing settings you use for this
combination? I have had my 5mx for a long while & it used to email OK via an old Siemens S25 mobile.
I then moved on to a Nokia 8310, but could never get that to handle the
email function, despite trying many different settings, including those advised
by Matt McConnell's usually excellent web-site.
I've now upgraded to a Nokia 6230i and would dearly love to be able to get
the 5mx email function working again through it.
I look forward to hearing from you.
