Subject: Nokia 9500 LCD
Hi
As no one replied to my original query I purchased an new small LCD on ebay. After some searching I came across a site -
http://www.uselessinfo.org.uk/ which had instructions on how to
dismantle the 9500. All I can say the job was done in 15 minutes and its now working great. I have also left the original screen plastic sticky cover on just to give it some extra strength.
I hope you to find the website useful should you encounter the same
issue.
Regards,
Craig

Well, using the freedom keyboard, it occasionally decides, when I'm
scrolling up, that I really want to scroll all the way to the top of the
document. Or even that I want to go up and down a bit.
The other keyboard I have is a iTech bluetooth Virtual keyboard (very cool)
Unfortunately, neither yellow nor the bitween programs work with it
(dispite it being a HID 1.1 device).

Subject: Any cosmetically challenged 5mxes for sale?
My 5mx's screen cable finally gave up some weeks ago. The machine's not worth repairing, since there's a lot more wrong with it - its spring clips (linking the screen and the base) don't work (the little plastic lugs to which they attach are broken), and even when the screen was working, it seemed very dim.
I'm using my MalayBook all the time now, but I haven't got a shirt pocket big enough for it, and I feel the need for a carry-anywhere computer. In due course I'll get a Symbian smartphone, but I want a cheap replacement 5mx to fill the gap.
I hope to get one cheap, because I need absolutely nothing beyond the machine - no leads, CF cards, PsiWin discs .... I even have my own stylus.
And I don't care what the body of the machine looks like, so long as the screen is unscratched (and bright) and the keyboard is good.
Machines are going on eBay for £50 upwards, but they invariably have all the extras. I'd like to pay less to have less.
Does anyone have a 5mx looking for a good home?

Phil,
>>Ian, please believe that I wasn?t criticising GlucoMon in any way.<<
Don't worry, that wasn't the way I took it at all; I just thought that it might be interesting to give a bit of background.
>>...the second that it is written originally for a 7/7Book/netBook (640 × 480 screen). My 32 bit Psions are both 5mxs.<<
It actually works better on a 5mx than I would have expected; even the graph looks quite good!! I have been assured that it works perfectly well on a Revo, but have not seen this for myself.
>>I imagine recording blood pressure, while not uncommon, is not specifically advised for most diabetics. It could help topple someone into hypochondria (if they?re susceptible). I think I was so advised as I have had a stroke (a few years back) and so my blood pressure is relevant. However that is certainly not the only reason some are so advised.<<
I imagine that it is not at all uncommon, particularly in the case of Type 2 diabetes.
>>I hope your daughter is coping well with her diabetes (Type 1, I assume) and that she will cope better and better as she gets older. It?s basically a condition that can be fairly easily treated now, it?s mostly just a question of keeping a weather eye on it.<<
It's going quite well, though it gets a bit tricky around Christmas and New Year, for obvious reasons.
>>...Certainly I?ll try it further and pass on such feedback as seems apposite.<<
Thanks.
>>But one thing is clear, my blood pressure should be measured at breakfast, lunch, dinner or bedtime - in parallel with blood sugar (though neither need be measured more than twice a day yet). For this GlucoMon?s Comments field is rather clumsy.<<
I agree entirely.
>>A question: would it be easy to add blood pressure fields (and perhaps pulse, certainly no more) to GlucoMon?<<
This is certainly possible, but it gets very tricky fitting everything onto the screen. I've been working on a version which enables the insuline doses to be entered as well. This works fine on my netbook, but gets very messy on my 5mx due to the large size and/or number of dialogs needed; this will obviously be even more of an issue on a Revo!!!
Thanks for your thoughts, look after yourself, Ian.
PS. sorry to anyone who finds this topic uninteresting.

Rolf Brunsting's advice is to keep it topped-up (i.e recharge it as
often as possible), but to OCCASIONALLY fully discharge & recharge it to
prevent a memory effect. My experience is that this does indeed work
best.
I have always kept it plugged-in, even when it is fully charged, and
never had any problems. Although iBattery keeps warning me to stop
charging after so many hours, but I ignore it!

Hello all,
It's probably a bit silly annoucing a program which I don't intend to
develop further, but it might be of some use to a few people. You can
read about it on the PDA Street thread below, where I have released
several versions - only the most recent version (at the bottom) is
downloadable.

Note that it was written to overcome problems I had with EPlayM.

I don't know of any place which does the repair, but it's not that
difficult to do if you have access to GOOD soldering-iron. (None of that
'cold-heat' crap, or anything with a tip wider than 1mm)
You also need a small glue-gun, an antistatic workplace and have no fear
of opening the netBook.
Just remember to back it up first. (I'll assume that you already have
done that)
And have a CF with the OS.IMG file ready.
Remove the batteries and the stylus.
Remove the two covers over the memory-expansion slots(under the screen).
Remove the memory modules. (There will be at least one)
Pull out the pins for the screen-hinges.
Peel aside the netBook logo sticker and remove the screw.
Lift out the frame, then disconnect and remove the keyboard.
Also disconnect the screen.
Removing the Motherboard is then just a few screws...
Locate the loose connector and clean the contacts throughly. also
removing any glue that may be on it.
Solder it into place, then use a bit more glue than was there
originally...
The rest of the reassembly is just reversing the disassembly
procedure... If you don't want to do it yourself, it shouldn't take a
pro tech more
than an hour at most.
:-)

Whose netBook also had a loose connector at some point in the past.

Subject: Freedom keyboard, Handy Day 2005,
Hi All,
This message is typed from a Fredom foldable keyboard. A colleague had
one and did not use it anymore so gave it to me. It types quite well
although it does nee d to be on a flat surface and I find that the space
bar does not work very well. I suppose however that it works a lot
better than either the thumbboard or the IR keyboard and that I will use
this a lot more thant the IR one.

Re. Handy Day 2005 - You really got it for a very cheap price. Besides
the Handy Day the Handy Safe is also a useful program. I never had this
5 seconds problem
you described and I alo use the weather function from time to time. You
can also find several nice skins for the program for free from the usual
sources. Thank s for mentioning the other programs, I was not aware of
NTPClient and GlobalTime. Calendar is not very good, but Handy Day
replaces this. For email I prefer Pro fiMail which has more functions
and the possibility of multiple mailboxes.
You do have on touch dial for the numbers 1 to 9, called speeddial. I
have not yet worked with Quicksheet and QuickWord, but share your
opinion about the spread sheet program from the little use I did.How do
you find jABP onthe P910 ? Is the sreen not too smal for this program ?
Why are Documents to Go Word and Sheet better than the Quick ones ? I
never got Avantgo to work with my phone, can you elaborate on this
program ?
Best regards,

Subject: Using the power supply for the Netbook
This is what I believe to be essentially true, even if slightly
simplistic:
Lithium-ion batteries can be charged a certain number of times (say,
500).
A charge counts whether it is a empty-to-full charge or any other type
of
charge.
This means, ideally (ie to maximise the long and short term life of the
battery), you should charge it to full, and run the Netbook of the
battery
until it runs out.
I tried for ages to research into the murky world of how best to
recharge
batteries (also alkaline, NiCd & NiMh for my other gadgets).
I found no clear, simple, trustworthy verdict. I have seen websites
clearly
written by geeky engineers saying that the NiCd memory effect is, to all
intents and purposes, completely non-existent. (Apparently, for it to
happen NiCds need to be recharged from *exactly* the same level every
single
time.)

Subject: Free English disctionary available for UIQ
More on UIQ applications ...
I've just come across this. It's a free English dictionary for UIQ
phones. I've tried it on my P910i and it works fine. I believe others
have seen it work on Motorola UIQ phones but can't verify that ...
2 components are required for this and although both can be freely
downloaded, REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. First go to
http://machman.gotdns.com and register. Once you've sorted, click on
Downloads -> Downloads (from menu on top left) and using the search
facility, enter "dictionary". This finds the dictionary and the reader,
both of which are required.
The database is a 4.37MB download but - more importantly - it expands to
15MB on the phone. If you don't have this space available, stop reading
now :-( This is a "rar" format file, so will also need a utility for
expanding rar files on your PC before copying to the phone(use Google).
The dictionary reader itself comes with a basic English - Italian and
Italian - English dictionary and the english dictionary is simply added
to these - probably using something like SMAN.
I already purchased a dictionary for my P910i so I won't probably use
this one, but for those that have the space and the need, this is an
excellent application!
All the best from Dublin, Ireland

Subject: Remap Mbook Ctrl Key?
Is it possible to remap the Control key on an Mbook. I've installed
Keyboard Remapper and Keboard Layouter and neither seems to be able to
map another key to Ctrl. I've installed Smartkey under the Dos emulator
which is quite wonderful, but won't remap / to Ctrl. I want to get the
equivalent of an AT keyboard, with the Ctrl key just to the left of the
A key - which makes a great differencd in using Wordstar or VDE, which
uses the Wordstar command set.
I also tried Macro 5. But I can't make heads or tails of how it
works any which way. I open it on the Extras bar - and a screen appears
with an alphabet of capital letters. I can't make out what to do from
that point -- and the Help screens don't make any sense to me. Is there
a manual that clarifies how Macro 5 works?

To Paula1323,
I don't know of a repair shop, but I had a similar problem with my 7book
and fixed it by buying a soldering iron, opening up the 7book and
soldering the power jack back on to the board. It wasn't a particularly
difficult job - though obviously you will know best what you are
prepared to try.
