I do it all the time with no problems so far.  I have been using a second-hand Psion 5mxPro that I got on eBay some time ago and find the extra RAM really useful.  I did worry about the OS being loaded so have the os.img file on my 512MB CF card.  It works great though I've only had to re-load it once and, as you might expect, it was my own fault, not a fault with the OS.

Anyway, so impressed was I with the old 5mxPro and all that extra RAM, that I managed to persuade my employer to replace my old 5mx - on account of the fact that the hinge is beginning to break.  So I got a "new" (remanufactured) one from Clove and it arrived today.  I'm happy as Larry in the knowledge that I've now probably got another 3 years use out of the "new" machine and don't need to worry about the screen cable on the old ones.  So expect to see an old 5mxPro up for sale soon!

BTW.  If you are thinking of ordering a remanufactured 5mxPro from Clove be warned - mine took almost 3 months to arrive (screens were in short
supply) - but it's been worth the wait!  Now to install all my programs...

Best wishes
Austin

Here in Asia, at least, I have seen a number of replacement batteries - not the original brand but they work well, nevertheless. I have tried  one brand - King Com that works well using the same charger that came with the phone.

Try http://www.mobilephonecrazy.com/modeldetail/sh888,Batteries.htm.

Hope this helps.

No that's what I meant. The 5mx does not support USB unless someone develops
a USB driver and appropriate hardware. What I was meaning to say is that I
use a CF USB plug as *the USB key*. In other words, I can take the CF out of
the "CF USB key" and plug it into the 5mx. Then I can take the CF out of the
5mx, plug it back into the "CF USB key" and plug it into a PC."

Dear Martin,

Thanks, indeed you confirm what I thought: the 5Mx does not support USB.
This is not a shame for late '90's technology, but a pity it sure is.
In fact, I see that my initial point was somewhere lost on you.
I did NOT say that I moan the fact of not being able to use a USB key on a
5MX, to transfer docs back and forth with a PC, when it is me who creates
these docs, either on the PC or the 5MX.
What I said was that, in my line of business, I participate in meetings in
other countries, where the meeting Chair hands out to delegates all
documents for the meeting (which number up to 30+ docs in .pdf format) in
electronic form, pre-loaded in individual low capacity USB keys.
This is cheaper, much lighter and much more environmental friendly than
distributing those docs in paper format.
But it makes a 5MX much of an handicap with respect to a slim "true" laptop.
A pity we do not get a modern 5MX!

Re.: netBook OS.IMG - My mBook has never frozen on me (yet) but I always have the OS.IMG file on my D disk. Just be aware that you must have it installed in the root folder of the D disk and not in any other folder ! There is no reason AFAIK not to have the file standard on your D disk.

Subject: Route 66

I continued to compare Route 66 with TomTom Mobile 5 but when I found a special offer for Route 66 European version 2006 for just over Gbp 180.- I decided to buy it. My first impressions are very positive, although I only used it a few times todrive to work and friends.

When the box arrived I had some difficulties with the pairing of the phone with the GPS. I was missing an instruction sheet, quick start tips or anything written at all. You cannot read the Cd the first time without havin ghte smartcard connected to the PC so I could not get to the instructions PDF file either. It took me several trials and errors until I found in the instruction leaflet of my phone that to pair I should use the code "0000". This brought the combination to life.

The GPS unit is very small and compact and sits very stable on the dashboard due to very good rubber type of feet. The map came almost immediately to life and I started to follow where I was driving. The entering of a destination is easy and you can choose to enter the address yourself, to get it from your contacts on the phone or to choose from a points of interest database or favourate places you enter yourself.

I entered my home address after work and started to drive. The voice instructions are clear and loud, no problem hearing them even with the radio on. On purpose I did not follow the route and it only took a few seconds for the program to recalculate the route whenever I strayed from the original route.

I can confirm that when your phone goes it will show whoever phoned but as soon as you answer the call with bluetooth the phone itself will return to the map of Route 66 even while you talk and bluetooth handles both connections without any problems.

it is correct that you cannot enter just a post code but you can enter the house number in a street and the program will know where in the street that number is.

I still have a lot of learning to do and will report further about this remarkable program in due course. It is however magnificent to see all this possible on a small phone like the P910i, absolutely amazing.

Some further observations in no particular order.

- I am missing a map of Western Europe like I have with Routeplanner to plan a pan-European route, for example when driving from Calais in France to Cologne in Germany to the exhibition centre. You need to change maps 3 times from France to Benelux to Germany.
- On the other hand, it is great to have highways and city centres on the same map so you don't have to switch between two programs.
- It is quite easy to force the program to get you right to the correct house  number. For example, finding an address in Amsterdam I typed in "42 Overtoom Ams" which is enough to find the exact number on the street called Overtoom in the city called Amsterdam. You don't have to write the full city name, unless the first few letters can mean several cities.
- On the Benelux map you can enter an address with the postcode (de Boelelaan 1083 ) to find the address, in the UK you can only use the first part of the postcode like Woodlands NW11 without the 9QL.

Sofar for now.
