Sounds like this went fine, and you have nothing to worry about (as far as restoring your files goes).

Don't worry, Check Disk cannot handle your memory upgrade.  It is not really corrupt!  Although I'm not sure what effect attempting to fix (a perfectly fine) C disk could have...

This isn't so easy to explain.  Anyone got any ideas?  I don't think it is memory-module related, because otherwise you would have seen lots of other problems (esp. major crashes).

If you use lots of embedded objects, that might explain things (EPOC is a bit buggy in that regard).  Although I don't know why it would only start after upgrading your memory.

No, it's nothing to do with a corrupted file (which you don't have anyway). It's your screen cable coming loose from the motherboard, and typically happens to most Netbooks (*) given enough time.  It is likely to get worse with time, and may be followed (eventually) by your screen's brightness fluctating occasionally.

(* yes, yes, I know that not every Netbook has this problem!  Mine doesn't. But that's most likely because it has the most recent (3rd?) design attempt by Psion to fix this problem, which actually seems to work.)

There is a short-term fix of pressing on the Psion logo, above where the 6/7 keys are.  I do not advise this, because I think it could eventually damage the Netbook, if done too many times.  Plus some people have reported that this eventually stops working anyway, unsurprisingly.

Better to sort the cause of the problem, which requires partially dismantling the Netbook, and resecuring the cable (after cleaning the contacts).  Unless you are confident about doing that (you can
find guides on the net), it would be better to let POS do it for you.

Nicholas Bloch,

I have only one suggestion at this time.  If you have the CheckDisk sis file then hard reset your netBook (take out all the batteries, leave for 15
mins).  Install the main battery, then the backup battery then load the OS. Don't install any CF card with files on it at this stage.  Set you time and date then copy the CheckDisk.sis to your netbook - you can use PsiWin or a blank CF card.  Run check disk once installed and see if the same error is on your c: drive.  If it is, then there may be a problem with the 32MB sim. You should remove it and then run the same procedure again, installing just CheckDisk.

This should help to eliminate any other problem caused by corrupt files.

Let us know how you fair with this procedure.

Regards
David

Hi Nicholas!

Don't worry, be happy!

1.) a) After a cold start, EPOC recreates some files which are neccessary for correct operation of the shell. Among them are System\apps\shell.ini and System\system.ini. The timestamp of these is the
time when the reset occured or even newer, if they have been updated by the system as the result of some user action. When you do a restore from your PC backup, just tell the restore operation to
restore all files or even format the disk before the restore. This will ensure that you get exactly the configuration you had when the backup was made.

b) There is a known problem with checkdisk on the upgraded C drive. The error message is bogus and
can (and should) be ignored. Your drive is OK, checkdisk's error message is the problem!

2.) This looks like a file access error. I can't tell you, which files are probably broken. It might help to delete or rename the directory C:\System\apps\Word. The directory should be recreated by word.
Another directory to check is C:\System\Templates\Word. The files in this directory are used by word
when creating a new document. Probably the "Standard" template file has a problem. Do the problems
depend on where you try to save the file?

3.) Your touchscreen calibration might be off. A common trick is to press gently on the "netBook" logo
above the keybord. This reseats the ribbon cable that runs from the mainboard to the screen. After
that, do a keyboard recalibration from the control panel.

Stephane I have a Jotter file named 'Jokes & Humor', to which I add
these texts as I find them.

As you are in France, here is page 7:-

A worker in a vineyard went in to the office and said - in French of
course - 'Patron Patron the wine harvest is lost - all the grapes have
been spoilt - we are ruined.

The patron thought for a moment and said - 'No No - we must simply add
something to make it ferment more and create lots of gas - so we will
have to wire the cork on - then we will sell it all to 'Formula One
Racing' - to spray over each other!

I'll not make a habit of posting these jokes, but would add that the
best thing that comes out of France is the wine.

Thanks for the input and I have downloaded Romeo.

What I want is a browser on the Mac which shows me all the files on
the Nokia. The browser that comes with the Bluetooth system
preference on the Mac is sufficient for most things except that it
doesn't show the hidden files on the remote phone.

Is there some way of accessing the Nokia's system files from the Mac ?

Itamar,

If you can all that onto a 1MB memory stick, I am seriously impressed....

Subject: Nokia 9300i vs SE P990

Dear all,

I see that the Nokia 9300i, basically the 9300 + WiFi, is now on sale in Brussels for less than 670 Euros.

I have been complaining about the lack of a lighted keyboard on the 9300 and I still do, but:
1. I like the Epoc proximity of the series 80 S/W
2. Its thumboard is much worse than the old 5 MX, but looks way better than the one on the SE 910/990
3. Strictly speaking as phones go, I prefer SE to Nokia, but Nokia had a good idea with its communicator line
4. The SE P990 seems never coming

Any news/idea when the SE P990 could finally arrive? I myself noted on these pages that it is delayed because of the M600.
Can I synchro a Nokia 9300 with Calendar & contacts in Mac OS X?

I know the story: better the egg (Nokia 9300i) today instead of the chicken (P990) tomorrow?

Thanks for any good word of wisdom.

Subject: SE P900 and Apple iBook

Hello to everybody,

having been a long-time-lurker there are finally some questions that I need to ask the helpful Psion and Symbian society :-)

I use a SE P900, and I am still quite pleased with it. For a long time I have been using a PC at work for backup of the phone and synchronising data (using Lotus Notes 6.5.1 for calendar and contact data). Now that I have moved to another job there is no Lotus Notes no more (unfortunately) so I switched over to my iBook (Mac OSX 10.4.5) and iSync.

Using Bluetooth I can say that iSync works really well - it was really easy to get all my contacts and appointments into the Mac.

What I didn't get to work is the USB desk stand - there seems to be no driver available for Mac OSX. Can anyone tell me if there is another possibility to do backups of the SE P900 using a Mac? Or do I have to set up some old Windows machine for that task?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Kind regards,

Gunter
