Dear All,
I would like to be able to connect my Garmin eTrex GPS unit to my Windows laptop, but of course this does not have a serial port. Has anyone successfully done this using a USB-Serial adapter, and if so, which adapter have you used? There seems to a lot of different models available, at vastly differing prices, but I don't want to buy one that doesn't work.

Thanks in advance, Ian.

I had a few problems with this after 3 fantastic years - the main one was great difficulty- eventually inability to synchronise - in desperation I did a hard set and now all I have is a frozen screen with the logo of the Malaysian education site.

I am not Vlad A, I am nic but I think that this reply is for me.

>> The Universal realises when it has opened a complex Word or Excel
document & only then says you can only do a Save as <<

Yes but just for the 1st time, because it has to convert it.  If you accept
the save as and then work again on the same file, the next time it will be
saved normally.

>> I was spoiled by the Psion which allowed you to open multiple documents
such as an agenda, minutes & meeting notes at the same time <<

So does the HTC Universal.  It is just 2 files of the same application that
you can not open at the same time (2 Word files or 2 Excel files but you can
have open at the same time everything else.

>> but its very expensive compared with Psion <<

I agree but I am afraid that the Psion era where almost everything was
freeware of very cheap shareware is long gone now.

>> you have to backup every file every time which can take a long time even
with USB <<

I don’t use USB but Bluetooth and it is quite fast.  I do it daily in one go
(select all and move) and you can keep working while it is backing up in the
background so the times it takes is not a problem.

Answer to: Vlad A

Re.: P990i - For serious text notes taking (like in meetings) I would advice you to get a foldable keyboard as without you will not be able IMHO to get to the required speed in typing. I got one from a firend and used it for a while, worked very well, but now I don't use it much anymore.

Re.: chat about the HTC Universal - You must have used at any one time most of the PDA's that are around or at least have knowledge about them. On which PDA would you feel comfortable to do serious emailing, note taking requiring typing of full sentences, sometimes several paragraphs, and be able to see TIF files (incoming faxes) ?

Re.: Psion Combine IT 56k+fax - Hi Thomas, how are you and where are you these days ?     I still have a Psion Dacom V34+Fax modem card lying around in the office and if you need it, let me know.

Hi Thomas,

Have to tried to contact the modem from the Comms application? Try a AT&F. That should reset the settings to default. then try an ATDT<some number> and check, if it dials out.

Subject: Do Mobile Phones Transmit Remote Signals

This is a bit out of topic but some of the best minds in IT and computers is in this group and I have a question to pose.

Someone sent me this little tidbit.  Is it true?

Does you car have remote keys?

This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone:

If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cellphone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their  end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other
"remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).
