Chris

I really wouldn't use the method you describe to put the keyboard back on the tracks.  I have supplied/replaced numerous keyboard for people who have tried the various brutal methods given by people.  I would suggest that you take a more restrained approach and just slide the keyboard on after removing some covers.  If you follow the first few steps of my flexi fitting instructions that can be found here http://www.psionflexi.co.uk/fitting_ <http://www.psionflexi.co.uk/fitting_&_opening.htm> &_opening.htm then you will open the machine in a controlled manner using only a small screwdriver. You can simply slide the keyboard back on and then reverse the instructions to put it back together.  Most people with a small amount of knowledge of undoing things with a screwdriver can do this.

Hope that helps.

Subject: WiFi on MBook

I have followed with moderate interest some of the messages regarding WiFi on MBooks and NBooks, but not interested in sorting out the problems involved.

The Tungsten C came with WiFi and I found that interesting - got it to work receiving but never could sort out sending.

I am now looking to buy a sailboat (currently looking at a steel hulled 28 ft Spray, for those interested in sailboats).

The marina we will be going into offers free WiFi internet.  WiFi on the MBook is suddenly looking very interesting.  Much better than putting in a phone
line for my 56 Kbs modem.

I received a Cisco Systems Aironet 340 series 11 Mbps Wireless adapter with my MBook.

Has anyone gotten WiFi to work on the MBook using this adapter?

If not, with some other adapter that I can buy?

I can probably sort out the send problem on the Tungsten and use it when at the marina, but the Psion is a much better email machine.

TIA,

Pulling is also a good tip, I'll remember it! Eric's (very careful ;-) advice, confirmed by Itamar, to push with the blunt side of a good table-knife worked easily enough. What I was unsure of is whether the material is flexible enough...

Subject: Citymaps - Setup difficulties and Norwegian cities

For some considerable time now I have been unable to install additional map areas to my Psion from the Citymaps CD on my main computer.  When the CD autoruns or I otherwise start Setup it halts with the following message:

"Your PC does not support the devices for which there are applications in this package.  Please install the supporting software first and run Setup again.  Setup will now end."

I have re-installed PsiWin, other Psion-related programs and even Internet Explorer 6 (though that was related to another difficulty now solved).  None of these measures has fixed the problem and I have had to go to another computer to install additional map areas.  This is becoming an increasingly inconvenient solution.  Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be and know of a solution?

Separately, I recently tried to add the Norwegian city of Bergen to my Psion.  Sadly, I was unable to find it in the list.  I wondered if the city appears under its Norwegian name but could not find what that is so gave up, which was a pity as it would have been useful for a recent trip.  Does anyone know of an easy way to locate cities that may be listed in Citymaps in their native language?

Many thanks
Austin

Can't imagine I'll be the first to say thanks for the amazing effort and dedication that you Digest editors have shown over the past 4 years but I'm sure I'll be speaking for everyone when I say that your incredible efforts are very much welcome and appreciated.  I enjoy learning still about Psion and am entertained and amused as well by the many stories and other titbits that come my way in the Digest.  That thanks also goes out to the very many contributors who of course provide so much of the content.

Well done to everyone

Re.: Antwerp - Ah, I did not know you are now in Antwerp. I pass by there from time to time as it has several kosher restaurants so I'll keep it in mind. Howver, Friday evening is impossible for me. out of interest, how many people still attend such a Psion meeting ?

Re.: Expansys & new machines - It is very sad that in the new booklet from Expansys (UK) about the latest mobile technology there is nothing at all about Symbian phones, it is all Windows Mobile. While not strictly Symbian/Epoc, the new phone "HTC TyTN" also called "Mda Varion" looks very interesting. The top part slides away from the bottom part to reveal a thumb board with what looks on paper like very usable keys. It further has a TFT touch screen, USB, Bluetooth and Wifi connection, quad-band GSM/GPRS, 2.0 Megapixel camera, 64 Mb RAM, 128 Mb ROM and a microSD slot for expansion. the iMate K-Jam looks very similar and probably is made by the same factory.but with an (older) smaller processor. I think the P990 is not on the same level as these machines and wonder what SE are planning for the future to keep up.

Subject: Downloading PDFs using Opera

When I tried to download a .pdf document from the Net using Opera v 5.14 on my MalayBook, a dialogue box opened giving me the choice of cancelling or opening the file using Pdf. When I tried to open the file, Pdf started OK, but displaying an old document - the latest document I'd read - stored on disc. I couldn't find any way of moving from this to the desired document on the Web. I'll have to download it using my PC.

Any advice?

For reference, the target document is at

http://tinyurl.com/fonuh

or, in full:

(an NUJ checklist for freelance contract negotiations, in case you're interested).

TIA,

Subject: System folders invisible in dialogue boxes

On both my 5mx and MalayBook, I always set Preferences so that the System folder and its contents are visible in the system screen. But in dialogue boxes in many applications, when I try to browse to the System folder, it doesn't appear.

Word is one such application. If I want to use (for example) File>More>Import text file ... in order to import text from a document within the System folder - well, I can't navigate to it. It won't show up. I would have to move the target file out of the System folder, permanently or temporarily, in order to access it via this function.

Why is this? Anything I can do about it?

Like other years I prepared again (a little late) an EPOC agenda file witt the Jewish dates, holidays and other important data like the weekly Torah reading portion, Omer counting, etc. You can synchronise this file with outlook (or other agenda programs) and than synchronise it for example with your Symbian phone (like I do).

Let me know by private email if you are interested in receiving this file.

I would like on this occasion to wish all Jewish (and other) subscribers a very happy and healthy New Year.

Subject: Approaching the 1,000 mark_proposal

Dear Itamar, dear all,

I would propose, as a topic for the 1000th edition of the Digest, a wish for the future, rather than an eulogy of the past.

May be our most concrete hopes for the ever-moving target of a replacement for our beloved Psion 5 MX is something akin to what Steve Lichtfield described:

http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/s60communicator.htm
<http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/s60communicator.htm>

To be more concrete, I am proposing a petition to Nokia, to bring out soon such a device.
Someone might indeed remember some of my complaints about the Nokia 9500 and 9300(i), which failed in some respect to fullifil expectations.

Steve might set up the petition on his web site, we could discuss the terms on the Digest and make publicity.
I volunteer to bring it personally to the attention of Nokia R&D management, with whom I have some professional contact, provided that our petition makes sense in the end, both technically and business-wise.

Steve, or whomever volunteers to set up the web-based petition, should take the credit for this initiative.
I will accept the blame, if we do not convince Nokia.

PS: yes, I remember our petition for an Epoc-running Netbook
Pro. As the saying among hitmen in an old Bond movie went, "If it does not work on the first attempt, try again!"

Subject: Playing with M600i_more detailed impressions_introduction

Hello everybody,

In issue 988, I reported my first impressions of a Sony Ericsson M600i I had just bought.
In that contribution to the Digest, I sounded quite positive about the form-factor of the new smartphone, criticising on the other hand the design choices behind its larger sibling, the equally new SE P990i.

Basically, the thinking was: the P900i could have been the better option, were it not for the wrong decision to loose screen space and putting a minuscule finger-board on the main body, rather than using a larger open-up lid (larger than the one on the P910i). So I went for the smaller M600i, clearly not a replacement for a more fully functional communicator, but a good candidate for a powerful smartphone, to carry with you always and everywhere.

Now, after a more in-depth user experience of the M600i, I am quite sorry to report that I found also the M600i so unsatisfactory, that I returned it to the store in mint condition and got my money back (in the format of a full store credit, which seemed to me very fair and happily accepted).

I had read, of course, some reports on the web before buying it, that, I have to say, were a bit easy on SE.To avoid stirring a wasp nest among people who might like the SE's new offspring, let me clarify right over that I am not comparing the M600i with the Psion 5 MX (our regular stickyard to judge everything in life, so it seems), but that I am challenging the device only on the assumption that a smartphone should at least replace a simple (tablet) PDA and a phone.
I will also add some consideration on the P990i, where appropriate, because there are (negative) similarities between the two new SE products.

When reference to the 5Mx are made, they will only pertain to the OS, in the sense of how close, or far, UIQ 3.0, on top on Symbian 9.1, is with respect to the old, and sorely missed, Epoc.
PDA experience will be compared to a humble Palm TE2.
Phone use will be compared to old gsm (Nokia 5110, Ericsson T39 and R 520) and more recent, "pure" phones (Sony Ericsson Z 520i).
The predecessor to the P990i, the P910, will be the yardstick to comment on the evolution of the UIQ platform.
Last but not least, since we live in an interconnected world, and a smartphone is a bit small as a stand-alone device, aspects of synching and file transfer with both Macs (OS X 10.4) and PC (Win XP SP2) will be mentioned.

Absolutely no pretense of being exaustive, since I could play with the M600i only a few days, before the time limit to bring it back to the shop for reimbursement was up.

Details in the next contribution to the Digest.

Kind regards,

Subject: netbook won't boot

Hello All,

Any tips on how best to proceed here? A loyal and aged netbook
crashed tonight - blank white screen - and now won't do anything at
all. Even removing all batteries etc. and leaving it for a while - on
reinsertion there is no beep, no "insert OS", just a glowing white
screen...

Hope someone has good tips on troubleshooting, repair centres (we're
in the UK), or sources for a replacement machine.
