Subject: Netbook screen problem/loose circuitboard components
Dear all,
I'll assume from the silence on my last question that no-one else on the list recognises this problem of losing a component from their netbook/7book's circuit board. But I still wonder if others who have had these coloured jailbars on the lower half of the screen might not have had a similar experience. The component is so small it would be easily missed. Or does all this seem unlikely to those who know more about screen circuitry than I do?
Anyway, thanks for listening.
Best regards,
Ian

I found a small flake of solder loose in the machine and as I put the circuit board back onto the machine I noticed that where it had been lying on the screen there was a minute component.
This component is about 1mm by 1mm by 1.5mm long and comprises a small green rectangle (of plastic?) on top of which is a (very slightly) smaller white rectangle (of plastic?). Around the middle of the white rectangle is wrapped some copper (possibly a very fine wire coil but I didn't have a magnifying glass to check and it might just be sheet copper with a slight grain). It occurs to me that the detachment of this component from the circuit board might well be causing my problem.
Can anyone more familiar with circuit board componentry tell me what it probably is?

My advice at the moment would be to hold on for slightly longer before you consider the Jump to a Treo. The Treo 650, as you mention, is pretty much at the end of its life, is no longer imported into the UK (due to ROHS compliance) and new machines are about to appear.
Rumour has it that there will be an announcement from Palm fairly soon on new machines. The 700 (Windows) is now available for pre-order but I would favour the Palm OS. My experience is that Palm OS makes it easier to do things than the equivalent Windows Mobile software.
I switched from a netBook to a Tungesten T5 then a Treo and have not regretted it. The machines do not multitask, as you say, and the software is less powerful. The major advantages for someone who uses their phone a lot are the fact that the device includes everything you need. Forget about the built-in apps and use Datebk6 or Agendus (I favour the former) for your scheduling - that way you can combine appointments and tasks in a single view in the way that Psionistas know and love.
Hope this helps.

Syncing with Mac:
This is easily achieved with calendar - iCal and contacts - Address Book via isync (on latest version of OS X 10.4.8). Sync has to be done via bluetooth and you need to patch a file manually or buy a patching prog from novamedia as the OS doesn't know about S60 3rd edition yet. I chose to pay Novamedia just under €10 although it is easy to add the relevant text lines to the isync application if you are careful. Not had any problems with the sync either way. For other files you can either send them via bluetooth file exchange or use the "browse" menu item in the bluetooth top menu which opens a finder like window for drag & dropping in either direction. It is much faster, however, to connect the supplied usb lead and connect the E61 in data transfer mode when the memory card appears as a removeable disk in the finder with usb 2.0 transfer speeds.
MS Office:
Transferring MS Office files have been fine in my limited experience and simple powerpoint files run fine on E61 (originally Keynote files for you Mac fans). Sheet is slow. My laptop is in for repair so I can't let you know more on this at the moment.
Data:
Nothing like this available that I know of.
Next time - why the E61 has had as much impact on me as my first psion Series 3.

Subject: CHARITY
Dear Digest,
I think the charity idea is great so I have made a couple of donations -
A one off payment of £25 to Oxfam's Unwrapped
A commitment of a monthley payment to NSPCC for £5.
I would like to thank the team for their efforts and look forward to issue 2000!

Hi Bill,
I was using for a year or so Papyrus on my N-Gage QD and it's a great program. Yes it brings your stuff from calendar right in to Papyrus. I highly recommend it for a Series 60 machine. I asked them if they did the same program for the Series 80, as I liked it so much, but they said no they don't. If they did I would buy it right away. I think it also comes with a task manger program and it was also very good. I used it all the time to status my various installed programs and it was a great place to delete files.
Thanks,
Bob
