Dear Digestives,
from next April 29th, I will be spending a one week holiday in Berlin (Germany).
Could you give me the link (and your opinions) about a good, recent sw Map, that could help me to easily find connections and itineraries, among the various Train and Underground Stations in this town, so that I could download it on one of my following devices ?
- 5mx/MC218
- Nokia 9500
- ViaMichelin X-980T GPS Navigator
(Any other touristic suggestions about this town, you would like to send to my personal address, will be more than welcome)
Many thanks & best regards
:-)

Dear Friends,
I already have the good old Berlitz Phrasebook, but could you please help me so that I could also download a good German-English (or even better a German-Italian) and viceversa Dictionary, for my 5mx or MC218 ?
Many thanks & best regards
:-)

No at all wierd. Sounds like you are suffering from mild symptoms of the Revo Battery Problem. Basically the Revo think's it's batteries are too low, so it doesn't risk playing sounds (which draws too much power).
I don't know how you got your Revo's batteries replaced, but I can only suggest that you get it done again, and this time more carefully. Also make sure to FULLY charge the batteries (say 8+ hours), before you switch it on for the first time, so the battery charging circuit is properly calibrated.

If you don't want to cause the Revo Battery Problem(s), then I strongly recommend that you do NOT experiment with chargers, just to see if they work. Ones that supply insufficient current have been reported to PERMANENTLY confuse the battery charging circuits on the Revo, rendering it nearly useless (see previous Revo email).
I do not recall what current the official Psion charger can supply, but be absolutely sure that your new charger can supply AT LEAST that current at 6v DC. For a transformer that offers multiple voltages, the quoted maximum current is likely for the smallest voltage, and will decrease in proprotion to the voltage increase.
My recommendation: Stick with your heavy (duty) power supply, rather than risk problems.

Subject: Nokia 9500 now works with GoogleMail
Hello fellow Nokia Communicator users!
GoogleMail allows POP3/SMTP access to your email account, but it requires the use of a non-standard port - and previously Messanging did not support this.
Having upgraded my Nokia 9500 to firmware 6.27, I wanted to take advantage of the listed ability to specify the port of the email server, so that I could use GoogleMail on-the-go (via GPRS). There was no new option visible, the built-in Help file said nothing, and searching on the internet produced no clues - so I made a lucky guess, and it worked! I thought that I ought to tell others know how to do it too, so here goes:
Start Messanging. Go to the Tools menu > Accounts settings. Edit your existing email profile, OR create a new email profile using the "Create new" button.
I will skip mentioning the standard settings, since those are documented, and somewhat specific to your own requirements.
As I already have GoogleMail forward any emails to my ISP's email address, and I could already download emails by POP3 from my ISP (even when using GPRS), I was only interested in being able to SEND emails using Google's SMTP server. So:
1. I switched to the Servers tab, changing the "Outgoing e-mail server" to "smtp.googlemail.com:465" (without quotes!)
2. Switched "Use SMTP authentication" to "Yes".
3. Gave my "SMTP username" as<address truncated> (yours will be different!!!!).
4. Gave my "SMTP password" as my normal Google password.
5. Clicked the Done button, tested an email, and it worked :-)
If you want to directly retrieve emails from Google's POP3 server, then I *imagine* that you will need to do the following in the Settings dialog for your email account:
1. Switch to the General tab.
2. Give "Username" as your equivalent of<address truncated>
3. Give "Password" as your Google password.
4. Switch to the Servers tab.
5. Give "Incoming e-mail server" as "pop.googlemail.com:995".
NOTE that newer users of GoogleMail will have an address that ends in @googlemail.com NOT @gmail.com .
Let me know how you get on!

Regarding my previous email, I forgot to mention a crucial extra step for both sending AND receiving using GoogleMail:

> 4. Gave my "SMTP password" as my normal Google password.
After this you should go to the Advanced tab, scroll down to the bottom, and set "Outgoing secure connection" to "SSL/TLS".
Also, you MAY wish to set "Copy to my e-mail address" to "Yes", so that your home computer has a copy of any emails that you send.

Subject: Disks from 7dayshop.com
Dear All
Apologies for losing the reference, but about 4 editions ago someone
recommended buying a generic CF card from 7 day shop.
Just a small warning - I find their branded products all to be good, and
at a good price. However, one Sandisk lookalike I bought was useless,
as the case was not exactly the right dimension to be read as present in
the MP3 player I use. I got my money back without a quibble, so I am
happy to support the outlet, but will always go for a branded product
myself - they still show a good saving over the prices on mainland UK.
Kind regards
Philip Carlisle

Subject: WIFI on netBook problems - please help!
I have purchased a Buffalo airstation (WLI-PCM-L11GP) card for my netBook, and used the "user guides" to get WIFI up and running from various websites (FoxPop, etc).
I want to use my netBook to browse internet/emails when I am out and about in WIFI cafes, although I am testing it on my BT home connection which utilises a wireless connection.
When using either Flfinger or Opera to connect to the web, both "power" and "active" lights come on the card, flash as if a connection is being made, but all I get is the error message (after about 1 minute) "unable to resolve hostname" (Flfinger) & "Network Problem" using Opera. NetstatRF confirms the card is active when trying to carry out the "ping" or surf to the web page, but not at other times.
I can get my desktop to recognise the netBook using the peer-to-peer function, however this then stops my wireless internet on my desktop from working...
Please advise me what I am doing wrong to be alble to connect directly to a wireless (WIFI) connection either at home or in WIFI cafes...

Subject: Windows Mobile devices
Since the subject of WM devices (former Pocket PCs) has come up, I thought I'd comment as well.
Some background info: in addition to my Revo, RevoPlus, MC218, 7book, 2 Apple Newtons, a Palm m515, a Palm Tungsten T and a Sharp Zaurus C700, I also have a Dell Axim x50v running Windows Mobile 2003 SE. (CNET discusses it here: http://reviews.cnet.com/Dell_Axim_X50v/4505-3127_7-31138229.html)
All of these machines have their strengths and weaknesses - there is no overall "better" machine. All my contact and appointment info is stored in Outlook on my notebook and synched with whatever machine I am using at the moment, so it only takes a few minutes to update every machine (basically Palm, Psion, Dell) with my most recent data.
For data safety and word-processing, the Psion easily remains king. The keyboard and ease of data entry make all the difference. I have a bigger fold-out Bluetooth keyboard for the Dell Axim, but it offers nowhere near the comfort of the Psion.
So can a Palm or Windows device replace the Psion as a portable word processor? Not without a built-in keyboard, in my opinion. External keyboards are more of a kludge than anything else.
The Palm is a lot of fun to use - I like its small size, its ease of use, the calendar, the alarms and reminders and all the little freeware apps that are available.
Windows Mobile has made some real progress since I reviewed the Pocket PC for Revoworld in 2002 (http://www.revoworld.com/dbShownews.asp?ID=723). The platform is now much faster, the calendar is quite useable, and the wireless capabilities are fantastic. ActivSync makes it really easy to store the same documents on the WM machine and a desktop - you update one, the other is updated automatically. In addition, there is a Palm emulator for WM called "StyleTap" (http://styletap.com/) that runs most of my favorite Palm software (Snappermail, Xiino, QuizWiz, Shadowplan, Progect, etc.). So even if you're a big Palm fan, you can still use a Windows Mobile machine and continue to use your favorite Palm apps - curiously enough, in some cases they work better under Windows Mobile than on the Palm itself.
For me, here are the key considerations:
1. If I have to do any typing, I take a Psion with me
2. If I want to surf wirelessly at an Internet Cafe, I bring Windows Mobile
3. If I want to read ebooks, study vocabulary and just play around, I bring a Palm
All of the machines are fine for storing contact and appointment info, especially since I sync them all with Outlook.

Subject: Fast FileManager for the 9500
Hi Commi users,
our subscriber Edo Vucurowitch<address truncated> known as programmer of the fine View+ for the netBook, wrote now a great file manager for the 9500.
The program can very fast handle files (copying, removing, pasting, comparing, hex viewing, text viewing, MBM viewing etc, etc). It looks like the good old Norton Commander (2 file panels at the screen). It also creates and administrates notes, and the best, you can use and write your own macros like Macro5! Edo named them "PlugIns".
The program is a must (like iDesk) for all serious commi users and I want to highly recommend it! It's freeware!
You can find the program at
http://forum.i-symbian.com/cms.php
Thank you, Edo, for the great program.
Best Regards
Rolf
