Subject: Re: Problem with 5mx - Thank You
Dear all,
Thank you to everyone who has replied to my problem, either via the Digest or direct to my email.
Thank you for your suggestions as to the problem - you were all correct!
I finally realised that although my own PC is too new to have a serial port, my work laptop isn't and I was able to temporarily install Psiwin. Thank you to everyone who told me to only open the screen slightly to see my data (and diagnose the fault). I did, I could change my settings and therefore back up to my work laptop and CF card.
Thank you for your suggestions as to a solution - just about everyone recommended Psionflexi and that is where I will be heading next.
As for backing up...I think I will be backing up a little more regularly and to everything that accepts my Psion1 I think that I will also keep a paper record of all my important information/work so that I am not just relying on something electronic. Between this and my laptop's hard drive failure I
think I have learnt a valuable lesson in backing up over the last couple of months!
I usually just 'lurk', always reading the Digest, but finding that a lot of it is over my head as I only use my 5mx for it's more basic functions. However I am very impressed and grateful that so many people have responded so promptly to my problem and that this forum is available to someone like
me who isn't particularly knowledgable when it comes to computers & PDA's. Thank you.

I currently only use PsiWin to synchronise e-mail, Contacts and Agenda. I
don't use it for backing up, I do what you do and use a CF reader. The only
thing is that PsiWin has all the converters with it so if you uninstall
PsiWin you will not be able to convert from Psion Files to PC format files.
That said, I have nConvert installed on my Psion and do conversion there. I
also use PdfPrinter to produce my more complex files for e-mailing.
However, the PsiWin conversion for Word is still better and nConvert does
not handle formulas (I think). I would keep PsiWin for now, you may need
its converters one day!

David

Subject: TomTom Navigator 6
I am using the WM% phone Qtek 9100 which is the same or very similar to several other makes with the same model. I think they all use theHTC software, at least that comes up when doing a soft reset.
Currently I use Navigator 5 on this phone and I wonder if anyone has knowledge whether or not Navigator 6 from TomTom will work on this phone or not. TomTom have not tested it and therefore will not give any guarantees.
Navigator 5 works very well and I subscibed to the pocketGPS database of speed cameras. They now have a new function where you can register cameras on the phone that are not in the database. On the website of TomTom I found the very old DOS program makeov2 and dumpov2 which run only in cmd mode which allow you to convert the ov2 file into a text file, add anything you like and convert it back to an ov2 file. There exists also the makeover program for EPOC that was written by Richard Gee some 6 years ago. I still have it on my netBook.
Any ideas on the Navigator 6 program ?
Best regards,
Itamar

Re.: Do I need PSIWIN ? - Yes, if you want to convert files you need Psiwin to be installed as it has got the converters. It is up to you to decide whether you need that or not, but I would say why not leave it on your computer just in case ? Do you need the space ? Is it bothering you on the computer ?
Best regards,
Itamar

Re.: Problem with 5mx? - If you don't have a CF card buy one, they really are very very cheap nowadays, format it on the 5MX and copy the internal disk to the CF card. Once done take out the CF card and at least you are sure you will not lose any data. If you send it in for a repair they will undoubtedly disconnect all batteries and hopefully restore the data after the repair but don't count on it and don't take that chance, certainly not for the price of a CF card !
And I agree with Keith : back up, back up, back up and back up !! Even my phone with diary and contacts I back up every night automatically.
Best regards,
Itam

Subject: Help! - with Revo, Mako, Mbook and model 5
I'm having trouble with my :Pions on several fronts. 1. My Malaybook only shows the "My Schoolbook" screen that it displayed when I first received it. I can't get beyond that. I do have a cf card in the D drive that has the OS image on it . ( I just put it in a cf card reader to make sure.) What do I have to do to gain access to the programs and the other contents of the C and D drives? This happened to me once before -- and happened to the Mbook that I gave my stepson.
I think I recall THAT I solved the problem once, with help from people on this list. But I can't recall HOW I solved it. Can anyone remind me of what to do.
2. I was using a regular Revo (8mb) that i bought second hand - and the screen has gone dead - presumably because the battery is shot. I also have a couple of Diamond Makos (= Revo Plus) with blasted screens - and one Revo that is half apart. I would like to transfer the screens from the dead Revos to the Makos. But I can't figure out how to detach the screen - the top half of the clam shell) from the bottom (keyboard) part of the machines. Does anyone know of a site that explains how that can be done?
3. Meanwhile, I've fired up another Diamond mako that I had in reserve.
But I can't seem to connect it to my PC in order to restore from the backup on there from an earlier Mako. I get the picture of the plugs trying to connect. But they never succeed. Here too, I've had that problem before - and eventually it cleared up. But I never knew why!
Can anyone suggest what to do about this - or refer me to a place in the archive that deals with this problem?
4. I bought a Psion 5 on ebay - and it opens up and functions very well. But it says that the backup battery is "not present" - even
after I install a brand new one. Can anyone suggest why that might be the case? I'll try connecting it to the PC and see if I can make the connection. If I could get either the Mbook or the 5 to restore from my backup, I could transfer files to the other Psions by infra red. But as of now, I'm trapped in the present, unable to get to my backed up agenda and data.
5. I have the emulator on my PC. But I can't figure out how to get to my backed up file using that. Is there any way to do so?
I'll be extremely grateful for help on any and all of these problems.
Melvin Woody

Hi Anne,
it's right, we are discussing more and more the problems of other machines than the 5mx. But you can read all old digest issues (from 15 May 2002) and try to find solutions for your problems opening the website www.psioneering.co.uk/digests/index.html. Unfortunately there isn't yet a search function, but "all has not been said and done". For the time beeing you can download the Digest topics from the same site, open at your 5mx and search in it.
Best Regards
